GNED-105 Contemporary Canada:
Places, People and Perspectives
Explore Canada’s geography, its past, its peoples, its political and socio-economic institutions and national and international relationships in order to arrive at an understanding of our present. Learn about, reflect upon and analyze Canadian issues, their roots, their meaning today and their influence on our future.
GNED-120 Introduction to
Complementary Therapies
In this introductory survey course, students will study the history and development of complementary therapies and modern medicine. The course will also examine numerous complementary therapies from historical, theoretical and practical perspectives. Therapies in recognized courses of study or certification will be recognized.
GNED-123 Logical Self Defense
Using current Canadian issues as the subject, learn to develop your critical thinking skills. Learn how to distinguish types of language, such as description, explanation and argument, to see how arguments are used to persuade and convince.
GNED-126 Occupational Health
and Safety
Occupational Health and Safety will offer a past, present and future approach to the subject matter. You will learn the historical perspective and fundamental concepts of occupational health and safety with specific reference to legislation in Ontario. You will also come to understand how to identify and recognize hazards in the workplace as well as how to remove or control them to make a workplace safer. This part of the course will include an in-depth look at the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and the impact of effective hazard warnings in public and private life. Occupational Health and Safety will explore the future of health and safety, and the move from WHMIS to the GHS platform of global harmonization of hazard warnings.
GNED-128 Personality and Growth
Personality psychology is a branch of psychology that defines what personality is and how it influences our behavior and actions. This course will seek to understand how personality is developed. Through an examination of current research and theories, you will explore patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviour that make a person unique. Personality assessment and intelligence testing will be explored.
GNED-129 Principles of
Psychology
Principles of Psychology was designed as an introductory course into the theoretical and practical discipline of psychology. As such, the goal of the course will provide you with the know-how to enable you to view your life and interactions from a psychological perspective, employing scientific methods and research information. Lectures, class discussions, question and answer periods and in-class assignments will focus on subfields of psychology such as biology, states of consciousness, learning, memory, motivation, personality, disorders and treatment.

GNED-130 Principles of Sociology
Principles of Sociology will examine basic concepts and practices of group behaviour as a social science. This course will use classical and modern sociological theories to deliver key themes such as culture, socialization, organizations, norms, conformity and social change as well as inequalities across economics, race, culture and gender. Specific chapters will include social learning from birth to old age, interpersonal behaviour in social settings, behaviour outside the norm, family as a social institution and the social meaning of formal learning. This online course has

GNED-135 Social Psychology
This course will introduce you to the theories, research and applications that constitute the field of social psychology. Important social phenomena will be described to demonstrate how social psychologists analyze and explain such phenomena. Specific topics include research methodologies in social psychology, social perception, social cognition, attitude formation and attitude change, social influence (norms,
conformity, compliance and obedience), altruism and prosocial behaviour and attraction and close relationships.
GNED-137 Wellness Approach to
Stress Management
This course will teach you what you need to know about stress by providing you with skills that will contribute towards a life-long program of stress management. By reflecting current facts and principles that will provide the basis for
incorporating healthy lifestyle practices into your daily life, you will learn to recognize stressors and how they impact personal and societal health and workplace well-being.

Management
In this course, you will learn to establish patterns of living that will positively affect your long-term health and well-being. Not only is this offering an introduction to wellness, but it will also look at the process of behaviour change. The emphasis will be on empowering you to take control of your personal health and lifestyle habits through deliberate choices and consistent efforts that will establish lifelong patterns for overall health and well-being. Included will be current facts and principles that will provide the basis for incorporating healthy nutrition, physical activity and other healthy lifestyle practices into your daily life. Topics related to wellness and diversity such as gender, age, income, disability, race and ethnicity will be highlighted
GNED-144 Developmental
Psychology
The Developmental Psychology course will examine the stages of human growth from conception to death. A range of perspectives in human development will be covered, including biological, psychological and sociocultural. You will also examine the research methods and major psychological theories underlying human development. To ensure that you are grasping course concepts, you will apply content to your diverse personal experiences. Topics include history, theories and methods of research, heredity and prenatal development birth and the newborn, infancy development (physical, cognitive and socio-emotional), early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle adulthood and late adulthood.
GNED-147 Ethics in Business
Learn about ethical considerations in contemporary business. Examine moral frameworks and develop a model for ethical decision-making. Apply these frameworks and the decision-making model to ethical dilemmas and decisions.
GNED-159 World Geography
for Tourism
World Geography for Tourism will teach you how the physical, social, historical, political, economic and environmental elements of geography interact in various locales of the world to make each region unique and interesting to explore. While there is a tourist in all of us, this course is based on the belief that the more you learn about our natural and human worlds, the better you can make sense of the consequences of your social, political and economic activity on the environment.

Popular Culture in the 21st Century will
explore questions at the heart of our changing world. Using examples from our everyday lives – whether they are the experience of “going for a coffee,” voting for your favourite “Canadian Idol,” watching a music video on BET, or shopping at the Eaton’s Centre – this course analyzes some of the most important features of culture in the 21st century.

This course will survey some of the major religions of the world. Gain a broad, basic understanding of ancient and tribal religions, North American Indigenous religions, Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Taoism, Confucianism,
Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and New Religions. The course will provide a comparative understanding of similarities among the religions while highlighting each religion’s distinctive elements.

The analysis of human sexuality draws on historical, theoretical, cross-cultural and life-cycle perspectives of sexual attitudes, behaviours, development and experiences.
GNED-179 Mastering the Moment
Mastering The Moment is a course that will focus on mindfulness, a well-researched practice that has proven to increase self-awareness, focus and concentration, decision-making abilities and overall happiness. You will learn about the science and historical philosophies that support mindfulness and practice a variety of techniques in every class. The theoretical and experiential foundation for cultivating and incorporating mindfulness into your life will be of great benefit as research demonstrates how mindfulness practices decrease the symptoms of stress, anxiety, racing thoughts and other negative states that can negatively impact personal, academic and workplace success.
GNED-190 Growing Up Digital
Youth in Canada today are the first generation to grow up in a digital world and they are transforming our culture and institutions. This course looks at the Internet and its role in shaping recent history and society. It examines the impact of digital media that empowers our youth to communicate, learn, play, shop and work differently from previous generations. It also provides analytical tools to anticipate and act on what lies ahead in the future.
GNED-199 Latin and Ballroom
Dancing
In Latin and Ballroom Dancing, you will learn that there is more to understanding International Ballroom and Latin dances than having the right moves. As such, the course will provide you with theory of four International Ballroom dances (Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive and Samba), and three Latin dances (Salsa, Merengue and Bachata). As part of this course, you will be required to research, analyze and present information about the history and multicultural background of the dances taught. This approach will aim to teach the dances as a communication skill-set, similar to a language.

Ethics and Environment
In Technology, Society, Ethics and Environment you will gain an understanding of the impact that technology has on society and on the environment. This will be achieved through an exploration of ethical issues governing social, technological and environmental policies, and the impact of their implementation. Specific topics include privacy versus law enforcement, access to information, freedom of speech versus control of content, stem cell research and medical advances in the context of culture, global warming, green energies and sustainable technologies.

Workplace Experience
The Canadian Workplace Experience course has been designed as a study of the Canadian workplace that will also give you insight into your responsibility as a Canadian worker on local and global levels. Not only will this course identify the types of businesses in Canada and explain the functions of these workplaces, it will also teach you to connect the historical factors that have influenced the Canadian workplace with current and future developments in Canada and on a global scale. In looking at these aspects, you will also learn about the responsibility of current and future workplace
environments within Canada and globally. Canadian workplace trends will also be outlined.
GNED-302 Introduction to Energy
and Environmental Sustainability
A foundation course, Introduction to Energy and Environmental Sustainability will acquaint you with the concept of sustainable practices in the areas of energy and consumption. The course will begin by offering you an understanding of historical practices that have impacted the current state of the environment. You will then go on to learn how to analyze current events and respond to environmental concerns both within the context of your personal life and on a global scale. Introduction to Energy and Sustainability will be a combination of lectures and practical learning that will include assignments such as a sustainability essay, alternative energy research, energy diet and footprint analysis as well as a range of other in-class
assignments on various topics and quizzes.
GNED-500 Global Citizenship: From
Social Analysis to Social Action
Global Citizenship will emphasize the knowledge and skills required to live and work in a world that is globally interconnected. During your time in the course you will develop a sound understanding of what it means to be a global citizen, both personally and professionally, and the ways in which you can make a contribution to an equitable society and world. This will be achieved through examination and critical analysis of social problems, identity and values, media conglomeration, power and control and issues of equality and equity. As you study these topics, you will use different perspectives to develop a plan for social action that will bring about positive change.
