This chapterprovidesbasicinstructionsforinstallinghardware optionsintheserver.
Theseinstructionsareintended foruserswhoareexperiencedwithsettingupIBM serverhardware.Ifyouneedmoredetailed instructions,seetheUser’sGuideon theIBMSystemxDocumentationCD.
Installation guidelines
Before youinstalloptions,readthefollowinginformation:
v Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginsonpagev andtheguidelines in
“Handlingstatic-sensitivedevices”onpage 10.Thisinformationwillhelpyou worksafely.
v Observegood housekeepingintheareawhereyouareworking.Place removed coversandotherpartsinasafeplace.
v
Ifyoumust starttheserverwhiletheservercoverisremoved, makesurethatno oneisneartheserverandthatnotoolsorotherobjects havebeenleftinside the server.
v Donotattempttoliftanobjectthatyouthinkistooheavyforyou. Ifyouhaveto liftaheavyobject,observethefollowingprecautions:
– Makesurethatyoucan standsafelywithout slipping.
– Distributetheweightoftheobjectequallybetweenyourfeet.
– Usea slowliftingforce. Nevermovesuddenlyortwistwhenyoulifta heavy object.
– Toavoidstrainingthemusclesinyourback,liftbystandingorbypushing up withyourlegmuscles.
v Makesure thatyou haveanadequatenumberofproperlygrounded electrical outletsfortheserver, monitor, andotherdevices.
v Backupallimportantdatabefore youmakechangestodiskdrives.
v Haveasmallflat-bladeanda smallPhillipsheadscrewdriver available.
v Youdonothavetoturnoff theservertoinstall orreplacehot-swappower supplies,hot-swapfans,hot-swapdrives,orhot-plugUniversal SerialBus(USB) devices.However,youmust turnoff theserverbefore performinganystepsthat involveremovingorinstallingadaptercables.
v Blueona componentindicatestouchpoints,whereyoucangripthecomponent toremoveit fromorinstallit intheserver,openorclosea latch,andsoon.
v Orangeona componentoranorangelabelonor nearacomponentindicates thatthecomponentcanbehot-swapped,whichmeansthatif theserverand operatingsystem supporthot-swapcapability, youcanremoveorinstallthe componentwhiletheserverisrunning.(Orangecanalso indicatetouchpointson hot-swapcomponents.)Seetheinstructionsfor removingor installingaspecific hot-swapcomponentforanyadditionalproceduresthatyoumighthaveto performbefore youremoveorinstallthecomponent.

System reliability guidelines
Tohelpensurepropersystem coolingandsystem reliability, makesure thatthe following requirementsaremet:
v Eachofthedrive bayshasa driveora fillerpanelandelectromagnetic compatibility(EMC)shield installedinit.
v Iftheserverhasredundantpower,each ofthepower-supplybayshas apower supplyinstalledinit.
v Thereisadequatespacearoundtheservertoallow theservercoolingsystem to workproperly. Leaveapproximately50mm(2.0in.)ofopenspacearoundthe frontandrearof theserver.Donotplaceobjects infrontof thefans. Forproper coolingandairflow, replacetheservercoverbeforeturningontheserver.
v Youhave followedthecabling instructionsthatcomewithoptional adapters.
v Youhave replacedafailedfanwithin48hours.
v Youhave replacedahot-swapdrivewithin 2minutesof removal.
v Youdonotoperatetheserverwithouttheairbaffle installed.Operatingthe serverwithout theairbaffle mightcausethemicroprocessorto overheat.
v Microprocessorsocket2 alwayscontainseither amicroprocessorbaffleor a microprocessorandheatsink.
Working inside the server with the power on
Attention: Staticelectricity thatisreleased tointernalservercomponentswhen theserverispowered-onmightcausetheserverto halt, whichcouldresultinthe lossof data.Toavoidthispotentialproblem,alwaysuseanelectrostatic-discharge wriststrapor othergroundingsystem whenworkinginsidetheserverwiththe poweron.
Theserversupportshot-plug,hot-add,andhot-swapdevicesandisdesignedto operatesafelywhileit isturnedonandtheservercoverisremoved. Followthese guidelines whenyouworkinsidea serverthatisturnedon:
v Avoidwearingloose-fittingclothingonyourforearms.Button long-sleevedshirts beforeworkinginsidetheserver;donotwearcufflinkswhileyouareworking insidetheserver.
v Donotallowyournecktieor scarfto hanginsidetheserver.
v
Removejewelry,suchasbracelets,necklaces,rings,andloose-fittingwrist watches.
v Removeitemsfromyourshirt pocket,suchaspens andpencils,thatcouldfall intotheserverasyoulean overit.
v Avoiddroppinganymetallicobjects,suchaspaperclips,hairpins,andscrews, intotheserver.
Handling static-sensitive devices
Attention: Staticelectricity candamagetheserverandotherelectronicdevices.
Toavoiddamage,keep static-sensitivedevicesintheirstatic-protectivepackages until youarereadyto installthem.
Toreducethepossibilityofdamagefromelectrostaticdischarge,observethe following precautions:
v Limityour movement.Movementcan causestaticelectricity tobuilduparound you.
v Theuseofa groundingsystemisrecommended.For example,wear an electrostatic-dischargewriststrap, ifoneisavailable.Always usean
electrostatic-dischargewriststrap orothergroundingsystemwhenworkinginside theserverwiththepoweron.
v Handlethedevicecarefully,holdingit byitsedgesor itsframe.
v Donottouchsolderjoints,pins,orexposedcircuitry.
v Donotleavethedevice whereotherscanhandleanddamageit.
v Whilethedeviceisstillinitsstatic-protectivepackage,touchit toanunpainted metalsurface ontheoutsideof theserverforat least2 seconds. This drains staticelectricityfromthepackageandfromyourbody.
v Removethedevice fromitspackageandinstallit directlyintotheserverwithout settingdownthedevice. Ifit isnecessary tosetdownthedevice, putitbackinto itsstatic-protectivepackage.Donotplacethedeviceontheservercoverorona metalsurface.
v Takeadditional carewhenhandlingdevicesduringcold weather.Heatingreduces indoorhumidityandincreasesstaticelectricity.
Removing the server cover
Important:Beforeyou installoptionalhardware, makesurethattheserveris workingcorrectly.Starttheserver, andmakesurethattheoperating systemstarts, if anoperatingsystemisinstalled, orthata 19990305errorcodeisdisplayed, indicating thatanoperating systemwasnotfound buttheserverisotherwise workingcorrectly.Iftheserverisnotworkingcorrectly, seetheProblem Determination andServiceGuidefor diagnosticinformation.
