The overall goal of the MPH advising system is to provide opportunities and resources for academic advising and career counseling in a variety of modalities throughout the students' tenure in the program. Since the MPH Core is a small faculty, we have sought innovative ways to provide academic and career advising to our students. Descriptions of advising systems for campus and distance students are provided below

Overall Student Advising (Both Campus and Distance Formats)

 Faculty Advisors are available for individual or group appointments. Although all full-time faculty members who teach in the MPH program are involved in overall MPH advising to various degrees, all matters relating to the MPH course of study, program documents, and matriculation or graduation matters are the responsibility of the three primary members of the MPH Core: Drs. Demers, Perales, and Pham. The three primary advisors are the only ones authorized to sign program documents, including changes to the course of study and verification of completion of the culminating experience.

 Fieldwork Preceptors who supervise MPH fieldwork often become invaluable advisors. Students are advised to consult with their fieldwork preceptors to develop their skills and to provide career advice.

The program uses several electronic methods to communicate reminders, late breaking announcements, and other noteworthy messages to students and faculty:

 The MPH Student Email Groups (campus, distance, and by distance cohort) are the program’s most important communication vehicle.

 The Health Science and Recreation Department website – and the MPH program web

pages – contain valuable information http://www.sjsu.edu/hsr/

 Credentialing Sessions: The MPH Program Director conducts a session on CHES/MCHES and CPH credentialing for graduating students during an orientation session regarding their comprehensive exam. See ERF for sample PowerPoint Presentation.

Three very important resources help students navigate the university and integrate their academic and career planning:

 MY SJSU - the university online information system - provides access to key resources for students and faculty, including a messaging system used to notify students about enrollment, grades, and financial aid.

 Graduate Studies and Research - Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations posts information regarding university policies, procedures, and opportunities. GS&R also manages the Institutional Review Board and provides resources for IRB proposal protocols at their website http://www.sjsu.edu/gradstudies/irb/

 The Career Center provides a wide variety of online, print, and in person services to prepare students for career opportunities (http://www.sjsu.edu/careercenter/about-us/services- resources/).

Campus Student Advising

 Faculty Advising - All new campus MPH students are offered and encouraged to participate in an individual meeting with an advisor during the first three weeks of the fall semester. They may also sign up for appointments to talk with any faculty member during their designated office hours, at any time during their MPH Program.

 Campus Student Handbook is updated each year and covers everything from the program’s policies, through graduation and joining the alumni association.

 Campus Peer Mentors are continuing MPH campus students who provide peer advice and support to new students after they are admitted but before they come to campus. Organized by the MPH Student Association, Peer Mentor volunteers are matched with incoming (or even continuing) students. Peer Mentors are particularly helpful in aspects of student life, including finding the balance with job, relationships, family, and community commitments during graduate school.

 MPH Program Meetings are held at the beginning of each semester. Specific topics include MPH program updates, (recently) CEPH self-study updates, reports from the MPH Student Association leaders, and notice of upcoming events. Breakout meetings on specific topics such as Graduate Projects or Masters Theses are also held during the MPH Information Meetings. The meetings also provide an opportunity for group advising of new students.

 MPH Early Orientation is hosted by the MPH Campus Coordinator, with the assistance of continuing students, in the late spring after the admissions process is completed. This meeting

provides a more detailed orientation to the program for students who have accepted the SJSU offer of admission.

 MPH Orientation is an SJSU MPH tradition – a day long orientation planned, hosted, facilitated, and evaluated by the MPH Student Association leadership. The Orientation usually involves a number of ice breakers, a Meet the Faculty panel, Graduate School Survival Tips, and informal time for socializing.

Distance Student Advising

Distance Student Handbook is updated each year and covers everything from the program’s policies through graduation.

 Distance Student Orientation Week - New distance students are provided an MPH program orientation during their first week long August campus visit (see Year 1 Distance Week

Schedule in resource file):  Canvas Town Square

We use the Canvas LMS to host a “town hall” to provide distance students with relevant MPH program information to enhance their successful progression through the MPH program. Folders of information include policies and procedures, summary syllabi, course sequence list, book lists, August campus information, comprehensive exam, fieldwork, and tutorials. This platform also allows students to ask questions and get advice from faculty and their fellow students (see ERF for a screenshot).
