Attention:
v UseonlytheIBMLeaderPinReattachment Kittoreattachtheleader pintothe tape.Othermethodsofreattachingthepinwilldamagethetape,thedrive,or both.
v Usethisprocedureonyour tapecartridgeonlywhentheleaderpindetaches fromthemagnetictapeandyoumust copythecartridge’sdataontoanother cartridge.Destroythedamagedcartridgeafteryoucopythedata.This proceduremayaffecttheperformanceoftheleaderpinduring threadingand unloadingoperations.

).Pullthetool backtohold thedoor open,then slidethetoolontothecartridge.Openthe tool’s pivotarm( 5

2. Tofind theendof thetapeinsidethecartridge,attachthecartridgemanual rewindtool( 1
inFigure8-13onpage8-15)tothecartridge’s hub2byfitting thetool’steethbetweentheteethof thehub.Turn thetoolclockwiseuntil you seetheendofthetapeinsidethecartridge.Then,slowlyturntherewindtool counterclockwisetobringthetapeedgetowardthecartridgedoor ( 3
in Figure8-13onpage8-15).
3. Continuetoturntherewindtoolcounterclockwiseuntilapproximately13cm (5 in.)oftapehangsfromthecartridgedoor.Ifnecessary, graspthetapeand pullgentlytounwindit fromthecartridge.
4. Remove therewindtoolbypullingitawayfromthecartridge.Setthetool and thecartridgeaside.

6. Remove theC-clipfromtheleaderpinbyusingyourfingerstopushtheclip awayfromthepin.Setthepinaside anddiscardtheclip.
7. Positionthetapeinthealignment grooveoftheleader pinattachtool( 1
in Figure8-15onpage8-16).
8. Placea newC-clipintotheretentiongroove( 2
inFigure8-15onpage8-16) ontheleaderpinattachmenttoolandmakesure thattheclip’sopenside facesup.
9. Placetheleaderpinintothecavity( 3
inFigure8-15 onpage8-16)ofthe leader pinattachtool.
Note: Topreventtheleaderpinfromrollingintothecartridge,inthe followingstepusecarewhenfoldingthetapeoverthepin.
10. Foldthetapeovertheleaderpinand holditwith yourfingers(see Figure8-15onpage8-16).

13. Use yourfingerstoremovetheleader pinfromthecavity ( 3
inFigure8-15) in theleaderpin attachtool.
14. Use thecartridgemanualrewindtoolto windthetapebackintothecartridge (windthetapeclockwise). Ensurethattheleaderpin islatched bythe
pin-retainingspringclipsoneachendoftheleaderpin.
15. Remove therewindtool.
16. Remove theleader pinattachtoolbyliftingitsendupand awayfromthe cartridge.

Environmental and Shipping Specifications for Tape Cartridges
Before youuseatapecartridge,acclimateit totheoperatingenvironment fora minimumof24 hoursorthetimenecessarytopreventcondensation inthedrive (thetimewillvary, dependingontheenvironmentalextremestowhichthe cartridgewas exposed).
Thebeststoragecontainerforthecartridges(until theyareopened)istheoriginal shippingcontainer.Theplasticwrappingprevents dirtfromaccumulatingonthe cartridges andpartiallyprotectsthemfromhumiditychanges.
Whenyouship acartridge,placeit initsjewelcaseorinasealed, moisture-proof bagto protectitfrommoisture,contaminants,andphysicaldamage.Shipthe cartridgeina shippingcontainerthathasenoughpackingmaterialtocushionthe cartridgeand preventitfrommovingwithinthecontainer.
