3.3. Presentación de entrevistas realizadas
The network management application NetView is integrated into the comprehensive system management enterprise platform Tivoli TME10. In regards to communication requirements in a firewalled environment, it is important to know how NetView is embedded in the Tivoli management suite.
The Tivoli management framework is based on a CORBA (common object request broker architecture) model. The Tivoli management model describes a hierarchical management structure with different management levels, known as the Tivoli Management Framework.

Figure 9 shows a basic overview of the management structure.

The Tivoli enterprise framework environment is the basic structure for the implementation of the different system management components. This structure can be implemented as appropriate for the management
requirements. The following sections show a brief description of the basic components. See the redbook An Introduction to Tivoli Enterprise, SG24-5494 for a more intensive discussion of this topic.
• TMR server: The TMR (Tivoli management region) server is a minimum installation requirement of the Tivoli enterprise management platform. It is the central management unit in the highest management level. The TMR server includes the binaries, libraries, data files, and graphical user interface needed to manage your Tivoli environment. The TMR server maintains the TMR server object database and coordinates all
communications with Tivoli managed nodes and endpoints (through Tivoli gateways). The server also performs the authentication and verification necessary to ensure the security of Tivoli Enterprise data.
• Managed Node: A Tivoli managed node runs the same software that runs on a TMR server. Managed nodes maintain their own databases, which can be accessed by the TMR server. When managed nodes communicate

directly with other managed nodes, they perform the same communication or security operations that they would perform with the TMR server. The managed node is the installation basis for management gateways and other components.
• Gateway: An endpoint gateway controls all communication with and operations on Tivoli management agent (TMA) endpoints. A single gateway can support communications with thousands of endpoints. A gateway can launch methods on an endpoint or run methods on the endpoint’s behalf. A gateway is created on an existing managed node.
This proxy-managed node provides access to the endpoint methods and provides the communications with the TMR server that the endpoints occasionally require.
• Endpoint: A TMA endpoint is any system that runs an endpoint service (or daemon). Typically, an endpoint is installed on a machine that is not used for daily management operations. Endpoints run a very small amount of software and do not maintain a database. The majority of systems in most Tivoli Enterprise installations will be endpoints.
The Tivoli enterprise framework can be implemented with special applications for the necessary management tasks of complex IT infrastructures. Thus, there are applications for remote controlling, distributed management for controlling of servers and clients and their applications, inventory
management, and many others. For the network management tasks, we are especially interested in the communication of NetView with the Tivoli
Enterprise Console (TEC) and the Tivoli Decision Support (TDS) application.
The installation requirements of NetView for UNIX require that it be installed on a managed node as part of an existing TMR structure or as a TMR server itself. NetView for NT does not have the requirement of being installed in a Tivoli enterprise framework, but of course it can be installed there.

2.4.1 Tivoli Decision Support (TDS)
The TDS application is the reporting and analyzing engine of the Tivoli system management platform. The application uses available data and database systems for generating reports, statistics, and graphical views about the condition and development of the enterprise IT infrastructure.
There are various adapters for the importing and processing of Tivoli Inventory data and importing of databases of the Tivoli Enterprise Console, as well as guidelines for processing distributed monitoring information. In connection to network management projects, TDS plays an important role in processing network data.
There are comprehensive functions and tools for the importing of collected network data from NetView. TDS provides reporting and analysis functions for processing collected SNMP data on network utilization and performance which allows you to generate meaningful reports and graphs that reflect the network condition. TDS uses the NetView RDBMS for processing its functions

and generating of the reports (see Figure 10 on page 33). NetView collects the required SNMP data for network utilization, CPU performance, and interface throughput in the RDBMS. TDS queries the database for the data required for the generation of needed reports and statistics.
Besides processing network performance data, TDS provide tools for the evaluation of network events. NetView collects all network events and traps in the RDBMS database. TDS generates graphical views and analyses from this data. For further discussion of the communication requirements between NetView and TDS, see Chapter 4, “Management in distributed environments”
on page 101.
In the TDS there are several guides available that show you how to create meaningful reports and graphs from this data. TDS helps you find the right interpretation and evaluation of the measured enterprise data. This allows you to have an objective overview of the condition and development of the enterprise network and its IT infrastructure. TDS can provide reports and analysis in several styles for the different administrative and executive levels of the enterprise. TDS provides, through its reports and analysis statistics, a basis for the further development of the network and also for the detection of bottle necks and problem fields in the available IT infrastructure. It helps you make the right decision for network investigation in the future.

2.4.2 Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC)
TEC is one of the Tivoli enterprise management applications. The application is mainly responsible for event management and automatization of
enterprises. It is the central management application for all events,
messages, and faults that will be generated in a complex IT infrastructure.
Events can be generated from various resources. The TEC has all required adapters for the processing of traps, events, faults, and messages from the components of the enterprise IT infrastructure, such as servers, clients, applications, and network components.
NetView is fully integrated into the event management process of TEC (see Figure 10 on page 33). NetView sends specific events to TEC, which can be filtered in NetView and passed through a NetView rule. In the TEC, these events will be processed according to the defined workflows. For further discussion of the communication between NetView and TEC see Chapter 4,
“Management in distributed environments” on page 101.
The Tivoli Enterprise Console provides a very flexible console from where the operational personnel can view the discovered events and perform specific management actions and tasks to solve the detected problems. The TEC provides the solution as a part of the Tivoli management platform as a central point for managing, correlating, and generating automatic responses for the events. TEC allows the processing according to the severity level defined.
This allows automatic handling of received events according to priorities you have determined. TEC also has comprehensive features to provide filtering and event correlation facilities to reduce the number of events that the operators will see.
Customizeable rules allow the filtering of detected messages and definition of automatic actions. Different roles and access levels and definition of policies provide the distribution of TEC entries to the responsible administrators and operators.
