and restart the DS.

Alarm Priority Alarm Text Cause/Recommended Action

Backup Admin Backup initiated by

username into filename

Informational message. No action required.

BackupError Emergency Backup into

filename failed,

error code n

Action to be taken is error code dependent.

BackupInvalid Admin Can be one of the following: Backup filename is invalid Backup filename is in use as current database

Correct the filename or stop use of the database.

BackupOK Admin Backup into

filename complete

Informational message. No action required. BadEnd Emergency DS shutdown failed

to update database

While shutting down, the DS was unable to save the directory to disk one last time. Restart the DS and examine any recently changed records (within 5 minutes of the error). Recent updates may be lost when the DS restarts.

Alarms

Issue 1.0 June 2002 101

BadString High Can be one of the following: nnn byte name exceeds nnn byte max, truncating. nnn byte value exceeds nnn byte max, truncating. Value "<valuename>" not in value list.

For alarm text #1 and #2, a record has been assigned a couple with a name or value that exceeds the maximum byte length that the DS can handle. Check the log file for the actual text of the name or value and determine if the data was correct. If so, use abbreviated versions of those strings. For alarm text #3, an internal problem has resulted in names or values being lost or incorrectly assigned. Contact customer support.

CloseWrite Emergency Close error to ds.tmp; cannot write changes

The DS failed to close the file ds.tmp during a write of the directory. Check the status of ds.tmp and try again.

Database Low Update sent to DS in Read-Only state

A method that alters the directory was invoked by a client on a Directory Server that is in Read Only mode. The method was not processed.

DatabaseNot Mommy

Low Restore only allowed for parent DS

The named database is not the parent.

Empty Emergency Database empty The file ds.ffd in the DS execution directory is empty or missing. Restore it from a backup if possible. Otherwise repeat the Avaya IC installation procedure to recreate an initial directory.

Failed_Request High DS.ChangeParents request to child failed (<Avaya IC

error code in hexadecimal>)

An internal attempt by the DS to invoke another server’s method has failed. Consult the log files for further information.

FailedUpdate High Received <event

name> event while

in Read Only mode

A child DS was in Read Only mode when it received an update from its parent. It could not process the update in Read Only mode and its directory is now out of sync. Stop and restart that Directory Server to force it to load the current directory and restore it to Read/Write mode.

NoDSHome High Could not add home to DS record. DS record may be insufficient.

While trying to add itself to the directory, the DS could not determine what its home directory should be. The DS record created probably will not be sufficient to restart the DS.

NoDSinDirectory High No DS listing in Directory. DS is adding self as Parent.

The DS loaded a directory with no DS records, either at startup or when executing a Restore method. The DS sending this alarm will add itself to the directory, but it would be better to restore the DS from a clean backup file if possible.

NoMeInDS Emergency DS #<UUID> not listed in its own Directory!

The DS has loaded a directory file in which it is not listed. If possible, a clean directory file should be restored.

Open High Could not open file for write

The DS cannot make periodic backups of the directory because it cannot open the file ds.tmp. Make sure that the file is not locked and that the DS has write permission to it. Orphan Emergency <reason> - Going to

Read Only mode.

A child DS can no longer contact its parent, possibly because the parent went down, the child came up and found no parent record in its ds.ffd, the child sent a message to its parent and got no response, and so on. Ensure that the parent DS is up and use IC Manager to set the parent again.

PingFailed High Attempt to Ping child #UUID failed (errorcode). Update may have failed.

If the DS tries to update all of its children at once and one of those children is

unresponsive, this alarm is raised. Ensure that the child is running if it should be. Rename Emergency Could not rename

ds.tmp to target filename

The DS was attempting to create a directory file and had done so in the file ds.tmp, but was unable to rename ds.tmp to the originally intended filename. As the DS removes any old copy of the file before renaming, this may mean that the original copy is gone or locked. Check the status of ds.tmp and the target file (ds.ffd if the DS.Backup method was not running). Restore Admin Restore initiated by

username from filename

Informational message. No action required.

Alarms

Issue 1.0 June 2002 103

RestoreError Emergency Can be one of the following: Restore from filename failed, error code -1, Cannot write snapshot into oldds.ffd Restore from filename failed, error code n, Cannot open file Restore from

filename failed,

error code n, Cannot rewrite current database file Restore from

filename failed,

error code -3, Write error when

transferring database

If the error is “Cannot open file”, you have specified a nonexistent snapshot file to restore from. Check your filename.

Other errors indicate that the disk or relevant files are read only or otherwise unwriteable (disk full, etc.). Repair the file protections, free disk space (only a few kilobytes are usually needed), or mount the disk, as needed.

RestoreInvalid Admin Can be one of the following: Restore from filename failed, error code -4, Invalid filename Restore from filename failed, error code -5, Filename is in use

The restore operation was not started. Correct the filename.

RestoreOK Admin Restore from

filename complete

Informational message. No action required. UUID Emergency ORB_object_copy_t

o_string on DS server object failed

The DS was started with a bad UUID parameter. Correct the UUID being passed to the DS on the command line (first parameter).

Write Emergency Write error to ds.tmp; cannot write changes

While attempting to write the directory to a temporary file, the DS encountered an error during a flush() operation. Check the status of ds.tmp and that it is not locked, and try the write again.
