I have witnessed that the concepts of manager, leader, entrepreneur and boss are intermingled in a conflicting manner in many of the free enterprises in our country. The development of trade and industry and the establishment of free enterprises in Turkey began after World War II in the 1950s.
As a person who got started in business and lived through those days, I consider it as my duty to convey some of my accumulation in this respect to the young generations. A large number of the free enterprises in Turkey started as small businesses founded by two or three partners.
The free enterprises were established as patriarchal or small family companies with few partners.
We find that many of the free enterprises are patriarchal family companies.
The most important characteristic of these individuals was the fact that they knew how to take risks, were spirited and entrepreneuring.
MANAGER, LEADER, ENTREPRENEUR, BOSS

They managed their tiny businesses without going into market research, feasibility studies, production planning, finance plans, cash balancing, promotion, public relation, sales activities and the work related to these functions, usually instinctively, writing down a list of numbers on an ordinary piece of paper and many times on the back of a cardboard cigarette box, most of the time not even realizing what the technical name of what they did was and obtained good results.
The discriminating characteristic of the founders of free enterprises was the fact that they took risks and were entrepreneuring.
Their entrepreneuring spirit and practical intelligence was enough to accomplish these things. The development of the market led to the development of these companies and some of the entrepreneur bosses started to use professional executives and continued to be bosses while some others went through managerial training and continued to be successful.
With the self-confidence of having established the business, some assumed they could manage their businesses, took over this duty and led their companies down hill.
If the entrepreneur is the boss, leader as well as the manager of a small company, he/she will fall behind in the developing enterprise.
Some of these entrepreneur bosses are born with leader characteristics. Regardless of whether their opinions are right or not, they are the ones who convince and lead the masses. Just like entrepreneurship, leadership is an innate trait. Management skills are scientific techniques developed with training.
Entrepreneurship and leadership are innate traits. Being a boss and managerial skills are developed through training.
The boss is a person with common sense who controls the course of the company, approves its performance directly or
indirectly through experts to enable his business to maintain its development.
Therefore, the characteristics of the entrepreneur, boss, leader and manager are different and complement one another.
The entrepreneur, boss, leader and manager are individuals who have complementary traits. A manager manages, a leader makes inventions.
A manager keeps the business going, a leader develops it. A manager deals with the system and structure, a leader with the people.
A manager depends on control, a leader is inspired by confidence.
A manager asks how and when, a leader asks what and why.
A manager’s eye is directed to the bottom line, a leader looks at the horizon.
A manager imitates, applies, a leader creates.
A manager does the job right, a leader does the right job.
