The Athletic Training Program (ATP) is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). To earn a degree in athlet- ic training a student must apply for admission in the ATP after completing pre- requisite courses. The ATP is a six (6) semester education program. The ATP combines study in the liberal arts, life sciences, and behavioral sciences with study of athletic training to offer the Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training Degree. The purposes of the ATP are to prepare practitioners of athletic training to meet the healthcare needs of the physically active, to provide a higher educa- tion foundation sufficient to support graduate study should the athletic training student elect to pursue a post-graduate degree, and to prepare the professional athletic training student for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination. Admission to the ATP is competitive; a limited number of slots are available. Only those pre-professional athletic training students (ATS) who have completed the admission requirements for the ATP will be eligible for admission to the ATP. Completion of admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the ATP. Additional fees will be required for students in the ATP as well as expenses related to travel.
Admission Packets are due to the ATP Director on or before April 1. Requirements are as follows:
1. Enrollment or acceptance into Delta State University. 2. Minimum GPA of 2.75 on 4.0 scale..
3. Completion of all pre-requisite courses with a grade of "C" or better. 4. Completion of the application packet.
5. Compliance with the Technical Standards set forth for admission to the ATP, technical standards can be accessed on the ATP website or directly from the ATP Director
6. Proof of 100 observation hours under direct supervision of certified athletic trainer.
7. Proof of professional liability insurance. (Must have prior to beginning clini- cal courses)
8. Proof of Hepatitis B vaccination or signed waiver form. 9. Proof of current physical examination.
10. Interview with ATP Admission Committee.
CRITERIA FOR RETENTION IN THE ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM
The following guidelines will be used to determine the “good standing” status of curriculum athletic training students.
1. Admittance into the Athletic Training Program as a curriculum athletic train- ing student.
2. The student must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher overall and a 3.0 or high- er GPA in the required major courses, with a “C” or better for each course. The student will be required to retake any Athletic Training major course in which a grade of “D” or lower is received. The student will be placed on aca- demic probation for one semester if the GPA falls below a 2.5 overall and 3.0 in required major courses. Failure to meet this standard will result in dismissal from the ATP.
3. The student will be dismissed from the program if a grade of “D” or “F” is earned in any Athletic Training course.
4. The student will have on file with the ATP Director:
a. American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR card with AED or com- parable certification, renewed every two years
b. Proof of completion of OSHA training, renewed annually c. Copy of Hepatitis B vaccination or waiver form
d. Professional liability insurance e. HIPPA form/confidentially form
Failure to have all necessary paperwork on file, by deadline, will result in the student being dismissed from the program.
5. The Athletic Training Preceptor Staff will evaluate the student’s clinical skills twice during each clinical assignment. Evaluations will be based on a student’s clinical performance. Any student receiving less than satisfactory evaluations will be placed on probation until the deficiency has been corrected.
6. The student must complete an individual timesheet on a daily basis, turned into the ATP Director following the completion of each clinical course. Daily hours must be signed off by the clinical site preceptor each day. Failure to do so may result in exemption of those hours calculated for his/her total. Number of hours needed per semester is based on clinical course requirements.
