System reliability guidelines

Tohelp ensureproper systemcoolingandsystem reliability, makesure thatthe following requirementsaremet:

v

Eachofthedrive bayshasa driveora fillerpanelandelectromagnetic compatibility(EMC)shield installedinit.

v Thereisadequatespacearoundtheservertoallow theservercoolingsystem to workproperly. Leaveapproximately50mm(2in.)of openspacearoundthefront andrearof theserver.Donotplaceobjects infrontof thefans. Forproper coolingandairflow, replacetheservercoverbeforeturningontheserver.

Operatingtheserverforextendedperiodsof time(morethan30minutes)with theservercoverremovedmightdamageservercomponents.

v Iftheserverhasredundantpower,each ofthepower-supplybayshas apower supplyinstalledinit.

v

Youhave followedthecabling instructionsthatcomewithoptional adapters.

v Forredundant andhot-swappableoperation,thepowersuppliesareconnectedto 200-240Vac.

Working inside the server with the power on

Attention: Staticelectricity thatisreleased tointernalservercomponentswhen theserverispowered-onmightcausetheserverto halt, whichcouldresultinthe lossof data.Toavoidthispotentialproblem,alwaysuseanelectrostatic-discharge wriststrapor othergroundingsystem whenworkinginsidetheserverwiththe poweron.

Theserversupportshot-plug,hot-add,andhot-swapdevicesandisdesignedto operatesafelywhileit isturnedonandthecoverisremoved.Followthese guidelines whenyouworkinsidea serverthatisturnedon:

Handling static-sensitive devices

Attention: Staticelectricitycan damagetheserverandotherelectronicdevices.

Toavoiddamage,keep static-sensitivedevicesintheirstatic-protectivepackages until youarereadytoinstall them.

Toreducethepossibilityofdamagefromelectrostaticdischarge,observethe following precautions:

v Limityour movement.Movementcan causestaticelectricity tobuilduparound you.

v Theuseofa groundingsystemisrecommended.Forexample,wear an electrostatic-dischargewriststrap, ifoneisavailable.Always usean

electrostatic-dischargewriststrap orothergroundingsystem whenworkinginside theserverwiththepoweron.

v Handlethedevicecarefully,holdingit byitsedgesor itsframe.

v Donottouchsolderjoints,pins,orexposedcircuitry.

v Donotleavethedevice whereotherscanhandleanddamageit.

v Whilethedeviceisstillinitsstatic-protectivepackage,touchit toanunpainted metalpartontheoutsideoftheserverforat least2 seconds.Thisdrainsstatic electricityfromthepackageandfromyourbody.

v

Removethedevice fromitspackageandinstallit directlyintotheserverwithout settingdownthedevice. Ifit isnecessary tosetdownthedevice, putitbackinto itsstatic-protectivepackage.Donotplacethedeviceontheservercoverorona metalsurface.

v Takeadditional carewhenhandlingdevicesduringcold weather.Heatingreduces indoorhumidityandincreasesstaticelectricity.
