Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into. Doing what you love is the cornerstone of having abundance in your life.
—Wayne Dyer
The world is full of abundance and opportunity, but far too many people come to the fountain of life with a sieve instead of a tank car . . . a teaspoon instead of a steam shovel.
They expect little and as a result they get little.
—Ben Sweetland
I was surfing the net, and I stumbled upon a very intriguing exercise.
It was a money exercise that you were to do before you went to sleep.
The exercise was stunningly simple. Before dozing off, when you are lying in bed and the thoughts and worries of the day have sub-sided, you imagine that there is a bowl of money over your head, right underneath the ceiling. You then imagine the bowl overflowing with money and turning over, and the banknotes falling down to cover your whole body.
You take enough time to feel the money on your skin and try to engage as many of your senses as possible—especially your preferred one. Try to smell, feel, and touch the dollar bills! Indulge in the abun-dance of having money all around you. Do this for as long as you like.
For me, 30 seconds or a minute felt right when I was imagining the whole room filling up with money!
Almost always, I woke up the next morning with the belief that
“life is abundance.” I could feel that this belief was somehow ingrained much more deeply than at an intellectual level, pervading every cell of my body. Doing this exercise right before sleep had a powerful effect because I was in two worlds at once. I took the feeling of abundance with me into the dream state. As I point out many times throughout this book, the dream state is one of the most powerful tools available to us to create what we want.
I continued to do this every night, and the results were amazing, and not only in my personal finances. I could sense this feeling of abundance working in every area of my life, every single business transaction, and every move I was making, and in a short period of time, my bank account tripled. Opportunities abounded in all areas.
I told some of my friends about it, and they applied the exercise with similar results.
An Ocean of Songs, Poems, Paintings, and Business Ideas
Not only did my personal wealth increase, but I also felt my creativity soar.
To put myself into a state where I was at my creative best in music, I gave myself the suggestion that there was an abundance of songs I could tune in to. I literally imagined an ocean of songs out there, waiting to come to life.
This opened up an inner channel. I became extremely receptive to what I call the “invisible radio,” the place where not only creative artists but each and every one of us can get their best ideas.
Notes formed magically on paper, my hands moved over the piano, tunes came alive on my lips, lyrics poured out, and I created songs with ease.
I gave myself the same suggestion with poetry, and I could sud-denly write a poem a day or even more. I could sense a strong inner connection with a world of creative abundance.
My new belief in abundance was the magic key that opened all doors. I tuned in to that abundance and felt unlimited works of art inside of me longing to come to life.
I then turned to other areas as well, painting being one of them.
Before long, I was featured in a book and exhibitions, and 70,000 people saw my paintings.
I discovered that I had always used that belief in abundance to create major breakthroughs in my life in many different areas, not just creativity. But I had not done it consciously, and afterward I had fallen back into society’s belief in limitation and lack.
I saw that my new belief in abundance worked for anything, from business ideas to creative solutions to problems or challenges.
The Beginner’s Mind in Art, Business, and Life
It dawned on me that this was also the reason why some of humanity’s greatest inventions have been made by amateurs. Amateurs approach a problem or need with the mindset that there is an abundance of pos-sible solutions. In the words of Shunryu Suzuki, “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind there are few.”
Experts are so loaded with knowledge in their area that by nature their vision is fenced in—thus, no major breakthroughs are possible.
A beginner’s mind approaches a problem, need, or challenge with an unlimited vision—there is literally an abundance of possible solu-tions. “The amateurs don’t know any better!” the experts say.
But a mind that believes in abundance connects you with an ocean of possibilities.
Abundance Is Our Natural State
If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything, it is open to everything.
—Shunryu Suzuki
I keep the telephone of my mind open to . . . abundance.
Then whenever doubt, anxiety, or fear try to call me, they keep getting a busy signal—and soon they’ll forget my number.
—Edith Armstrong
Abundance is our default state of being, our natural state. That means that our being always wants to return to that state.
Our natural impulses and intuitions will lead us to abundance—
if we let them. But we have to believe in abundance; if we do not, we will not trust and follow the impulses and natural inclinations that are leading us to it. We have to trust ourselves and our energy.
If you approach anything with a sense of limitation, that’s what you will get.
Limiting beliefs are like bars in a prison cell, with the only exception being that they are invisible, so you don’t know that you are actually trapped. However, they are there and they are very real when you look for them because their results will show up in your life as a lack of abundance.
Abundance Comes in Many Forms
The state, belief, and mindset of abundance can be applied to any area of your life, of course, not just your personal finances. Abundance comes in many forms. You can have an abundance of health, time, cre-ativity, ideas, solutions, love, and happy relationships—anything that gives you a sense of fulfillment.
Once you adopt the belief that abundance is your natural state, you will magically unlock all doors and opportunities.
The universe is abundance. Any time you are fully immersed in nature and you feel “all one” with the life surrounding you, with shivers running up and down your spine, you can feel and know on a deeper level that the whole universe is abundance and that the only limitations you will find in any area are the ones you create yourself.
Any limitation is based on the underlying belief that there is not enough.
Demand and Supply and Our Biggest Fallacy
Unfortunately, most business schools and universities instill beliefs in their students that are based on limitation. This is constantly rein-forced. One of economics’ favorite paradigms, the one of supply and
demand, is by nature based on a belief in limitation. It promotes a notion of scarcity that pervades modern economics and influences the decisions of policy makers, leading to exactly the kind of scarcity that they ideally want to avoid.
As with everything in life, it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.
No wonder fear abounds in most business schools. Any good student of economics, including myself at the time, would be a fool to renounce the principle of supply and demand and the underlying
“truth” of lack and scarcity.
Again, if you look at the full part of the glass, it will change your viewpoint and connect you with a world that is filled with opportu-nities. They will pop out of nowhere, like mushrooms in an open field of grass after a warm summer rain.
The more you adopt this belief in abundance, the more you will see it manifested in your life and the more you will be able to help others manifest it as well.
