4.1 for the BA (Communication Science)

Students who select this combination for a major in Communication must note that should they wish to continue with Honours in Communication registration will be provisional and subject to the passing of two qualifying assignments, one in communication theory and one in their chosen area of communication specialisation. They must contact the Head of the Department prior to registration. Students who majored in Communication prior to 2002 are exempted from this rule

4.3 for the BBA degree:

First level: COM101, 102

Second level: Any three of COM201, 202, 203, 204

Third level: COM306 and any three of COM301, 302, 303 or 304, and 305

Students who major in communication with only 9 modules must note that should they wish to continue with Honours in communication they will have to complete the two outstanding modules from the BA curriculum for students majoring in Communication, as well as the two additional compulsory modules for BA students majoring in Communication, namely TEX821 (or AFK821) (Text skills for the communication industry) and RSC201 (Research in the Social Sciences). Students who have already passed RSC201 must pass AFK822 (or TEX822).

SYLLABUS

First-level modules

COM101-X Introduction to Communication (S1 and S2)*

Purpose: to introduce students to the scientific theories and skills of intrapersonal communication (communication with the self), interpersonal communication, small-group communication, organisational communication, mass communication, and nonverbal communication. COM102-Y Persuasive communication skills (Public speaking) (S1 and S2)*

Purpose: to introduce students to scientific persuasive communication theories (rhetoric) and its application in public speaking.

Second-level modules

Prerequisite: COM101, 102

COM201-4 Interpersonal communication (S1 and S2)*

Purpose: to provide students with knowledge of interpersonal communication theories and research, and to enable students to apply the theory and research in individual, social and group contexts. COM202-5 Organisational communication (S1 and S2)*

Purpose: to acquire knowledge of organisational communication theory and research, and to enable students to apply the theory and research for the effective use, assessment and planning of communication in and between organisations.

COM203-6 Public relations and advertising (S1 and S2)*

Purpose: to acquire knowledge of the theory and practice of public relations and advertising, and to enable students to plan and execute public relations and advertising campaigns.

COM204-8 Intercultural, development and health communication (S1 and S2) Purpose: to acquire knowledge of the theories and research in the fields of intercultural, developmental and health communication, and to enable students to apply this knowledge in the development of a multicultural society.

COM301-8 Marketing communication (S1 and S2)

Purpose: to acquire knowledge of the theories and research related to the communicative aspects of marketing, and to enable students to apply this theory and research in marketing campaigns. COM302-9 Media studies: institutions and issues (S1 and S2)

Purpose: to provide students with knowledge of media institutions, functionalist and critical media theories, and media issues, and to enable them to research topics such as media institutional practices, ownership, regulation, censorship, media and democratisation, and the power and functions of the media.

COM303-A Media studies: texts and audiences (S1 and S2)

Advice: Students are advised to first register for COM302 before registering for this module. Purpose: to acquire knowledge of the theories of and skills to analyse media texts, genres, audiences and the effects of the media, and to plan the use of media for educational purposes.

COM304-B New media technology (S1 and S2)

Purpose: to introduce students to new media technologies such as the Internet, and to enable them to analyse the social, cultural, political and regulatory consequences of information and communication technology.

COM305-C International communication (S1 and S2)

Purpose: Purpose: to provide students with knowledge of the role of the media in globalisation, cultural imperialism, and international affairs, and to enable them to research the international flow of news and entertainment, the New World Communication and Information Order and international communication policy.

COM306-D Communication research (S1 and S2) Prerequisite: RSC201 and as above

plan and execute research, how to report research findings, and how to do audience and organisational communication research.

COM307-E Political and government communication (S1 and S2)

Purpose: to provide students with an understanding of the nature, techniques and skills associated with the role of rhetoric and persuasion in politics, the effects of political communication, and the media and channels of political communication.

COM308-F Communication ethics (S1 and S2)

Purpose: to acquire knowledge of different ethical theories related to communication, and the skills to critically analyse professional media ethics, ethics related to the regulation of the media, and professional codes of conduct.

COM309-G Public relations practice (S1 and S2)

Purpose: to acquire the knowledge and skills to understand media relations, to analyse public relations problems, to plan, implement and evaluate public relations campaigns, and to distinguish between public relations practice in business, government and nonprofit organisations.

COM310-9 Applied advertising (S1 and S2)

Purpose: to provide students with the theoretical and research knowledge to enable them to understand the consumer audience and the media of advertising, and to provide the skills to create advertising and advertising campaigns.
