Scope

This document applies to the responsible conduct of research by WVU School of Nursing (SON) faculty, staff, and students and is consistent with the mission of the School, the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center, and the policies of WVU Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP). Responsible conduct of research, from the inception of a problem to the publication of findings, ensures adherence to ethical standards and practices and denotes good citizenship, helping to maintain the public trust in research methods and findings. This policy extends to all forms of scholarship, including activities classified as research, teaching, learning, or service.

The WVU SON is dedicated to the creation and dissemination of knowledge that helps to reduce the disease burden and improve health outcomes of West Virginians, while

simultaneously maintaining the highest possible standards for research integrity among its entire research community. To that end, the overall purpose of the policy is to enhance the ability of WVU SON faculty, staff, and students to ethically and responsibly conduct and disseminate research. WVU School of Nursing has an obligation to ensure that its faculty, staff, students and all other individuals involved in research have a thorough working knowledge of matters related to responsible research behaviors.

Objectives This policy is intended to:

1.1 Be consistent and compliant with the West Virginia University Human Research Protections Policy

1.2 Ensure that the rights, safety and well-being of human research subjects are protected. 1.3 Provide a guide for the monitoring and continual improvement of Human Research

Protection.

1.4 Educate investigators and research staff about their ethical responsibility to protect research participants.

Pertinent Definitions

Academic misconduct: "fabrication , falsification, plagiarism , or other practices that seriously deviate from those that are commonly accepted within the scientific community for proposing, conducting, or reporting research that seriously deviate from those that are commonly accepted in the scholarly community for: (a) proposing, conducting , or

reporting research; (b) teaching; (c) learning, and (d) providing institutional, community, or professional service .. It does not include honest error or honest differences in interpretations or judgments of data."

Manipulating research materials, equipment, or processes, or changing or omitting data or results such that the research is not accurately represented in the research record.

Plagiarism: The appropriation of another person's ideas, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit

Procedure Description

These procedures refer to the conduct of all research studies including pilot studies, course- related projects, student projects, or evaluation studies using human subject data.

4.1 All faculty , students, and staff conducting research, teaching research courses, participating on research grants, or mentoring students in research must complete CITI training in Human Subjects Research and obtain a certificate of completion PRIOR to conducting any of the above research-related activities.

4.2 All faculty, students , and staff conducting research, teaching research courses, participating on research grants, or mentoring students in research must conform to the WVU Human Research Protections Policy, including compliance with the WVU Office of Sponsored Program Standard Operating Procedures (available at:

4.3 All faculty, students, and staff conducting research, teaching research courses,

participating on research grants, or mentoring students in research must declare conflicts of interest according to the WVU Conflict of Interest in Research Disclosure Policy (http://oric .research.wvu.edu/conint/coir-education-and- training).

4.4 All faculty , students, and staff conducting research, teaching research courses, participating on research grants, or mentoring students in research must respect the culture and heritage of research subjects , honor research subjects' confidentiality, safeguard and ensure the accuracy of all research data.

4.5 All faculty, students, and staff conducting research must complete the intent to apply for funding and internal SON resource forms for all study proposals submitted to the IRB.

4.6 All faculty , students, and staff conducting research, teaching research courses, participating on research grants, or mentoring students in research must be accountable for their own professional publications, presentations , and posters in terms of sound scientific principles that conform to ethical practice, transparency regarding sources of funding , attributing proper authorship, acknowledgment of mentorship, and limiting redundancy (or "salami slicing of publications") in accord with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors Recommendations for

the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work (2013) adopted

by many nursing journals and available at: http://www.i cmje.org/icmje-

"All persons designated as authors should qualify for authorship, and all those who qualify should be listed. Authorship credit, to include publications, poster, presentations, books, book chapters, etc. should be based on:

 Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work ; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND

 Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND  Final approval of the version to be published; AND

 Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

All those designated as authors should meet all four criteria for authorship, and all who meet the four criteria should be identified as authors. In addition to being accountable for the parts of the work he or she has done, an author should be able to identify which co-authors are responsible for specific other parts of the work. In addition, authors should have confidence in the integrity of the contributions of their co-authors (2014, p.1)."

Implementation

5.1 Each individual faculty member, student, and staff member conducting research,

teaching research courses, participating on research grants, or mentoring students in

research is responsible for adhering to this policy.

5.2 All faculty, students, and staff are strongly encouraged to contact the SON IRB

department representative prior to proposal submission to allow sufficient review of required documents

Additional Information, Documentation, and Reporting

6.1 Consistent with the Office of Sponsored Programs Policy and Procedures for

Responding to Allocations of Academic Misconduct, all members of the University community have an obligation to report observed , suspected , or apparent instances of academic misconduct.
