CAPÍTULO IV. INGENIERIA DEL PROYECTO
4.6. SEGURIDAD Y MANTENIMIENTO
The most important issue to be resolved at this point is
the interference by somatic Salmonella phages infecting the host bacterium which occur at much higher levels than expected. It is, therefore, necessary that further research
be conducted to determine the relative numbers of both somatic
Salmonella phages and FRNA coliphages in natural waters. This will require further examination of waters using this same host bacterium as well as the female strain (S. typhimurium
type WG45). The results of these studies should be able to
determine whether somatic Salmonella phages are consistently
found in high levels or if the population indeed contains significant levels of FRNA coliphages.
Additional work should include the investigation of other strains of Salmonella or related enterobacteriaceae which may
be less susceptible to infection by somatic phages. An F- plasmid could then be inserted into this strain and field tested in both natural waters and sewage to examine its sensitivity to infection by both FRNA and somatic phages.
F-specific RNA plaque isolates collected during this study and future samples should also be serotyped according to the method described by Furuse (1978) . This may help
determine whether FRNA coliphages isolated in these waters
are from the serogroups most frequently associated with human
Further improvements in the membrane filter method should continue with the development of a larger filter holder which would would accomodate larger diameter membrane filters. This would enable larger volumes of water to be filtered at faster
rates as well as reduce the effect of the accumulation of
particulates on the membrane surface.
Finally, this method should be used to compare the level of FRNA phages in source waters with the target organisms,
human enteric viruses. Parallel studies of source and treated
waters for the presence of human enteric viruses and F-
specific RNA coliphages should provide the most accurate
evaluation of the usefulness of this method as an indicator
