Syllabus: Students credited with this unit standard should be able to analyse the different cognitive and meta-cognitive processes and strategies. They will be able to identify the nature and quality of mental models and schemata in Mathematics Education. Studying the relationship between modelling, symbolising and problem solving will reveal to them the deeper nature and value of pedagogical content knowledge in Mathematics Education. Misconceptions will become powerful teaching opportunities to adjust and strengthen mental models about specific mathematics concepts.

HBEDAIQ Analyse the impact of the curriculum on effective mathematical practices

Syllabus: Students credited with this unit standard should be able to analyse the different components of a curriculum, as well as the nature of different perspectives on mathematics curricula. Students will free themselves from the traditional curriculum and teaching approach by understanding the NCS and RNCS. This successful implementation of the NCS and RNCS is dependent on a broader understanding of the possibilities of the positive influence of the Reform movement in Mathematics Education.

BEDNS1S Philosophical and historical dimensions of the physical and life sciences (offered for the last time in 2008)

Purpose: to clarify the relationship between philosophy (of natural science), natural science, and natural science education. This should equip the natural science teacher to interpret and critically consider and apply new approaches to natural science education.

BEDNS2T The primary and secondary school science learner (offered for the last time in 2008)

Syllabus: This module is an introduction to the more generally acknowledged and accepted theories of cognitive development as well as models of understanding, reasoning and learning. It includes the following issues: the characteristics of primary and secondary school science learners, the concept of scientific literacy, teaching natural science in a multicultural environment, gender in natural science education, and accommodating learners with special needs in the natural science classroom.

BEDNS3U The science education curriculum (offered for the last time in 2008)

Syllabus: This module includes the following issues: the philosophical and historical underpinnings of curriculum design with special reference to the natural science curriculum; a scheme for a science curriculum (the relevant outcomes based education terms, the content to be covered, assessment strategies, practical work to be done); curriculum foundations, principles and issues; curriculum development and curriculum organisation and classroom practice; the integration of environmental education into the natural science curriculum and integrating process skills instruction and portfolios into the traditional natural science curriculum.

Syllabus: The following topics are covered in this module: the relationship between the natural sciences, technology and society; the integration of

science and technology in the curriculum; a comparison between the skills involved in the design process and the science process; the impact that technology has on individuals, society and the environment and associated biases; cross-curricular and inter-disciplinary approaches to the integration of science and technology in the curriculum and technological literacy as the outcome of technology education and its relationship to natural science education.
