The writings of Zurita occupy the sky as an artistic medium. Five aircrafts launched white smoke typing the poem “La vida Nueva” (Anteparaíso. Zurita, Raúl. 1982). The poem was written in Spanish as a tribute to the Spanish-speaking population of the United States. The 15 sentences were drawn at an altitude of five thousand meters, with an average length of five to seven kilometers each. This monumental writing happens in the sky while Chile is under a military dictatorship.
The lyrical voice of Raúl Zurita has had as its axis a conscience as profound and sublime, as ripping and tragic, which implies speech as a construction and a symbolic conquest of the existence at an individual and collective level. This is the paradox that occurs between the word that transcends and that is corroded by its corporeal existence, causing also, the discomfort of those who read/observe these scriptures. These readers are at the same time ideal viewers and impossible ones, given that the point of view is almost like a vanishing point that only happens, as in an anamorphosis in an exact point of view. It is no longer about opening the pages of a book, but about converting heaven, the floor, and the Chilean landscape into a support of artistic and written interventions.
Raúl Zurita produced the poem “La Vida Nueva” with five planes that launched white smoke, forming letters and words that were cut out against the blue of the sky. The poem written in Spanish in the United States celebrates Spanish-speaking immigrants: Chicanos, Latinos, and by extension those who have been marginalized and segregated from every part of the world.
He studied engineering at the Universidad de Santa María de Valparaíso; his education was interrupted by the 1973 coup, where he was arrest- ed and tortured. His books Purgatorio (1979), Anteparaíso (1982) and Canto a su amor desaparecido (1985), published in Chile during the dictatorship and vastly re-edited and translated, have maintained the continuity of the great Chilean poetry and marked the beginning of a complete work that will merge history with nature, breaking the separation between artistic genres.
In 1979 he created with other artists of the group CADA, with whom he made art actions of political resistance. Among his other books are La Vida Nueva (1994), Canto de los ríos que se aman (1995), INRI (2003) and Zurita (2011). In 1982 he wrote using an aircraft a poem in the skies of New York, and in 1993, the phrase “Ni pena ni miedo” on the Atacama Desert, a phrase that by its size can only be viewed from the top. He has received the Guggenheim Fellowship Award and the DAAD in Germany, the prize Pablo Neruda, the Premio Nacional de Literatura de Chile and the Casa de la América de Cuba. Zurita is Doctor Honoris Causa of the Universidad de Alicante and Profes- sor Emeritus of the UDP. His poetry has been translated into a dozen languages. He is currently a professor of the Universidad Diego Portales, Chile.

The scriptural project of Raúl Zurita fits within a neo-vanguard conception of poetry, that searches for other possibilities to configure the page, such as the transgressed gesture to expand the page towards the infinite horizon of the sky, through a non-verbal element: the smoke.
