TOMORROW
IN THE MAKING
2019 CONVOCATION MOOSE JAW CAMPUS
Congratulations
YOUR TOMORROW
HAS ARRIVED.
President’s Message
It is an honour to welcome you to today’s Convocation Ceremony.
Throughout our 60-plus-year history, Saskatchewan Polytechnic has been, and continues to be, student- focused. We are committed to providing our graduates with the skills necessary to contribute positively to our province and to our country. Our emphasis on work- integrated learning, along with expertise in applied research, and our strong business and industry partnerships, open the door for you, our grads, to make meaningful contributions throughout your careers.
Our graduates are employed in every public and private sector of the economy. It’s one reason I like to say that Saskatchewan runs on Sask Polytech.
I wish you every success in the future, and I hope you will maintain your connections with us, including your faculty, friends and our Alumni Office. I encourage you to register as an alumnus, and make your relationship with us lifelong.
Thank you for choosing Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Your education will serve you well throughout your career. My sincere congratulations on your life-changing
accomplishment!
Dr. Larry S. Rosia President and CEO
Provost’s Message
Welcome to today’s Convocation Ceremony, and congratulations!
I want you to know how proud my colleagues and I are that you have reached this important milestone in your life. We commend you for the hours of hard work, patience and perseverance you have invested to make this day possible.
I am confident the skills and experience you gained during your time at Saskatchewan Polytechnic will serve you well. The hands-on nature of the programs will enable you to approach challenges with a critical eye and be solution-focused. These are skills employers value greatly.
While your education may be complete at this time, it is my hope that you embrace lifelong learning and continue to have strong ties with Saskatchewan Polytechnic far into the future.
I wish you much success as you begin this new stage of your life.
Board of Directors' Message
On behalf of the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Board of Directors, we extend to you our warmest congratulations, and are honoured to celebrate your achievement of this very important personal milestone.
As your tomorrow becomes today, may you remember that learning is a lifelong journey. In the words of L. Frank Baum, “No thief, however skillful, can rob one of knowledge, and that is why knowledge is the best and safest treasure to acquire.”
Though your course work may now be successfully concluded, we hope Sask Polytech will continue to be a relevant part of your journey for many years to come. We see our relationship not at a close, but just beginning. Your future successes will be meaningful to us, and we look forward to welcoming you again — as students, alumni, instructors, employers, mentors, parents, supporters and friends.
Again, my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes on this important day. We celebrate your achievement with you.
Mitchell J. Holash, QC
Chair, Saskatchewan Polytechnic Board of Directors
Alumni Message
Congratulations graduates and welcome! Our alumni are the leaders, the dreamers, the builders and the doers. Today you move from being a Saskatchewan Polytechnic student to a member of this growing alumni family.
Convocation is a true celebration of your achievement. As a member of our family we are proud of you and all that you have
accomplished.
We are so glad you’ve found a home at Sask Polytech and like all good homes, our door is always open. We want to keep in touch, hear where your path is taking you and we want to continue to celebrate your successes.
Congratulations on your convocation and welcome to the alumni family. We’re proud of you.

Associate Vice President, Advancement
Honorary Diploma Recipient
Maryse Carmichael
Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Maryse Carmichael has been fascinated by aviation for as long as she can remember. As soon as she was able, she followed in her three brothers’ footsteps and joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets with 630 Squadron, in Quebec City. At age 16 she realized her dream of flying when awarded her gliding scholarship.
Maryse soon continued her aviation adventures as a military pilot, joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1990. During her 22-year career, she accumulated more than 3,500 hours on three main aircraft types: the Tutor, the Challenger and the Hercules.
In November 2000, Maryse made history when she was selected, after a grueling competition, to fly with 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, the Canadian Armed Forces’ Snowbirds. She was the Snowbird’s first female pilot; and the first female pilot in the world to fly with a Jet Demonstration Team.
Maryse also served as the Operations Officer on 436 Transport Squadron, and as the Deputy Wing Operations Officer at 3 Wing Bagotville. In May 2010 Maryse was appointed as the Commanding Officer of 431 Air Demonstration Squadron.
The recipient of many awards, Maryse was recognized in 2005 in the Top 100 as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women by the Women Executive Network, and in 2013 she was the recipient of the Elsie MacGil Northern Lights Award. She is the Honorary President of the Air Cadet League of Canada and works at CAE, as Canada Region Training Center Operation Manager.
Organizational Profile

Programs serve every economic and public service sector. As a polytechnic, the organization provides the depth of learning appropriate to employer and student need, including certificate, diploma and degree programs, and apprenticeship training. Saskatchewan Polytechnic engages in applied research, drawing on faculty expertise to support innovation by employers, and providing students the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills.
Vision
By 2020, our expertise in responsive applied education and research that meet student and market needs will make us globally recognized as the first-choice polytechnic in Canada.

Academic Dress
Along with the academic tradition of black gowns, Saskatchewan Polytechnic grads wear v-stoles in the colour selected for each school. Other members of the platform procession wear the gown and v-stole, hood, or in some instances, a hat or mortarboard representing a credential they have received or the Saskatchewan Polytechnic v-stole that represents the school in which they teach.

Faculty Award for Excellence:
Teaching
As a recognized leader in the development and delivery of skills and technical training, Saskatchewan Polytechnic owes its success to the individual and collective efforts of its faculty and staff. Our faculty award program recognizes excellence in service and innovation as a significant component to making our institution a key contributor to Saskatchewan's economic and social development. The Faculty Awards for Excellence: Teaching are intended to recognize, acknowledge, and reward Sask Polytech faculty for outstanding teaching. Up to five awards for recognition of excellence in teaching are presented each year.
Governor General's Academic Medals
The Governor General’s Academic Medal was first awarded in 1873 by the Earl of Dufferin, and has since become one of the most prestigious awards that a student in a Canadian educational institution can receive.
The Governor General of Canada continues this tradition of encouraging scholarship across the nation and recognizing outstanding students. The medals are awarded only for academic excellence as follows:
• Bronze at the secondary school level
• Collegiate Bronze at the post-secondary diploma level
Honorary Diploma
Since the first Honorary Diploma was awarded in 2004, Sask Polytech has been recognizing extraordinary individuals who are making a difference in communities
throughout Saskatchewan and beyond.
Honorary Diplomas are presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to education, business and industry, or government, and who are supportive of Sask Polytech’s vision, values, and overall role in the local and provincial communities.
Student Outstanding Citizenship Award
A Student Outstanding Citizenship Award may be presented each year to one Saskatchewan Polytechnic student at each campus. This award recognizes a student who has inspired and encouraged others to make positive changes. Nominated by Sask Polytech faculty, the student’s outstanding work demonstrates benefits to the campus community and others.
Student Innovation Award
A Student Innovation Award is presented each year to a Saskatchewan Polytechnic student or team. This award recognizes a student, or team of students, who has/have achieved a high standard of excellence on an innovative project, or demonstrated innovative methods within their program of study.
