It was both entertaining and thought-provoking, and the affirmative team won some votes, but ultimately the majority of audience votes remained negative. Our first Audit Committee, consisting of Brian McMillan and Lucinda Walls, reported on their examination of the accounts. Nathalie Des Rosiers came to talk briefly about the Federation's activities and services, and to encourage CAML to join.

As a result of the recent successful amendment vote, the constitution now calls for a two-member audit committee to be appointed by the board, not to include current members of the board. Stacy Allison-Cassin is moving from the committee and was thanked for her work. Some of the Review budget will be used to pay an outside translator to free up some of Denise Prince's time to get French content.

It was also noted that the IAML website needs to be updated to reflect the location of the conference.

In 2009, 950 million mobile phones were sold and the worldwide mobile subscriber base grew from 2.1 billion to 2.7 billion. For perspective, there are 800 million cars, 850 million personal computers, 1.3 billion landlines, 1.4 billion credit cards and 1.5 billion televisions in use. This paper will explore the opportunity open to libraries to make their extensive collections accessible on mobile devices.

Finding free music magazines online: an overview of sites, resources and tools FREELY AVAILABLE MUSIC MAGAZINES live in various online environments. The session starts with an overview of the types of sites that contain music magazine content, such as national digitization projects, Open Access initiatives and sponsoring organizations. The final part of the session is devoted to an overview of additional resources and tools for locating music magazines on the Internet: specialized directories, portals, and databases; search engines; union catalogs; and professional magazines and listservs.

A Librarian’s Reflections on the Emerging Bibliography of Film Music 1

I've never had a question about film music that wasn't discussed in the standard texts of the time. However, I was struck by her comments about Christopher Palmer, who is the author of many film-related articles in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. For me, the unresolved question is whether Palmer's approach reflects the state of the scientific literature at the time (1980).

The first three chapters are a comprehensive and thoughtful review of many important authors in this field over the years. Preservation is also familiar with the mission of the Music Libraries Association's Film Music Round Tables, established in 1986. Edinburgh University Press, edited by Kevin Donnelly of the University of Southampton, also has several books in its Music and Moving Image series.

It should also be noted that Cooke wrote an authoritative article on film music for the second edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2001), which is available on the Oxford Music portal. Here comes the Celluloid Symphonies anthology edited by Julie Hubbert of the University of South Carolina. The depth of research is revealed in the footnotes and quotations that punctuate the narrative.

The Scarecrow Press series of film score guides is reminiscent of Norton Critical Scores and the Cambridge Handbooks of Music. Each volume is an in-depth exploration of the music composed for a particular film, such as Erich Wolfgang Korngold's The Adventures of Robin Hood (2007). But there is one major publication that has received little critical attention: Mychael Danna's The Ice Storm, by Miguel Mera, published in 2007 as part of the aforementioned Scarecrow series.

Works Consulted

The second movement is also a ternary design: the contemplative and atmospheric opening gradually develops into the stirring tutti in the middle, only to return to the subdued nature of the opening. A revised version of the piece was performed with the Toronto Symphony, conducted by Jukka Pekka Saraste, on October 10, 1996; it is this version that appears on the disc. For example, the opening theme is peaceful and ethereal; the material in the first two variations gradually becomes more vivid in character, leading to the dark and ominous third variation; variation four and the short coda gradually return to the quiet calm of the opening.

An inexplicable reverberation in the piano seriously spoils the enjoyment of this composition which, in the words of Kenneth Winters (quoted in the CD booklet), 'leaves the listener shocked that a work of this caliber should be played so rarely.' French and English contains valuable details about the composers, works and conductors. The title of the album, To Music, is also the title of the opening song cycle, written by Healey Willan in 1904. In the third song, “To Becalm a Sweet, Sick Youth”, the musical motifs from the opening song can be heard. , which ends the cycle triumphantly.

The brevity and simplicity of the musical writing effectively captures the humor in each of these three songs. Prochyshyn negotiates the high-tessitura vocal writing and sustained phrases of the cycle with aplomb. There is an exotic reference to South Indian flute music in the second song, "The Elephant".

The first song, "Alba", is an impression of the mystery and majesty of an autumn dawn. When first introduced to Barbara Pritchard's Piano Atlantica, I interpreted the title as an indication that the disc would contain piano compositions that present colorful portraits of the geography and musical traditions of Canada's East Coast. All the composers, along with Pritchard, now live and work in the Maritime provinces, although only one, Richard Gibson, is a native of the region.

From the somber opening chords played at the extreme range of the instrument to the closing passages executed directly on the strings, this is a thoughtful exploration of the instrument's sonic potential. Although each variation is a separate entity, - writes Crutchley, - the group has its general shape and in the end one feels as if a journey has been undertaken, from.
