International Symposium on Advanced Research Findings of Electronic Records Management evoked strong repercussions

On April 16, 2010, the international symposium on advanced research findings of electronic records management opened ceremoniously by an original advanced research findings of electronic records management video review in the School of Information resource Management (SIRM) in Renmin University of China (RUC). This symposium was hosted by the State Archives Administration of the People’s Republic of China (SAAC) and undertaken by the School of Information resource Management (SIRM) of the Renmin University of China (RUC). The symposium specially invited many reputable international specialists and project leaders in the field of electronic records management from Canada and Australia, sharing about the advanced international research findings of electronic records management especially the latest research results. Dongsheng Duan, the deputy director of the State Archives Administration of the People’s Republic of China (SAAC) and Huiling Feng, Vice President of RUC (Special Consultant of IP3 TEAM China) , attended the conference and delivered important speeches.
The opening ceremony of the meeting was presided over by Professor Bin Zhang, the vice president of the SIRM. The symposium began with the enthusiastic opening speech of Dongsheng Duan, the deputy director of SAAC. Duan stressed in his speech: “The research results and practical experience of the archivists all over the world increase each passing day.
These advanced research findings can provide good reference to china, which has significant implications to all of us in exploring the scientific modes and development strategies of the electronic records management together. ” He sincerely appreciated the careful arrangement and excellent organization of SIRM and it’s great efforts in the research of electronic records management and the training of archive talents for years. Duan also expressed his great hope that all attendants of the conference could take this opportunity to share their experience with each other fully and promote the management and the use of the electronic records together.
Huiling Feng made a warm speech in the opening ceremony on behalf of RUC and SIRM . She cordially appreciated the full support and the devotedly instruction of SAAC, and welcomed all the attendants. Professor FENG hope Chinese researchers pay high attentions to the international research and learn from the world. She earnestly hopes that china’s exploration in the management of electronic records will make more contributions to the world.

The symposium mainly focused on the advanced research findings of electronic records management worldwide and their enlightenment and inspiration. The first day of the symposium mainly revolved around the management methods and strategies of electronic records and primarily contained management mechanism, risk management of electronic records and the research on permanent authentic records.
Luciana Duranti, chair of the Master of Archival Studies at the School of library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS) of the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the Project-Director of InterPARES, first gave a keynote speech entitled “Continuity and Transformation in the Role of the Archivist” giving an introduction to the development process and the recent studies of InterPARES and analyzing elaborately the continuity and transformation of the archivist’s new role in the new era. Her speech triggered the audience’s strong interest with brand new academic perspective.
Yuenan Liu, Associate Professor in SIRM of RUC, introduced the framework of the electronic records management mechanism of China put forward by research group of RUC.
Yueming Tu, Director of Archives of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was invited to chair the symposium in the afternoon. Professor Luciana Duranti gave another wonderful lecture titled as “The Trustworthiness of Digital Records Bethune”, talking about the concepts, components, functions and characters of electronic records on the view of the dynamic angle.
Terry Eastwood, Director of the School of library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS) of the University of British Columbia (UBC) delivered a speech on "Appraisal of Digital Records: What is New? ". He pointed that the train of thought and the method of the Appraisal of Digital Records should change accordingly in the new era.
Ning Zhang, lecturer in SIRM of RUC, discussed comprehensively about the risk management of the electronic records on behalf of the records management risk-avoidance and countermeasure research in the E-government system research group.
The second day of the symposium basically revolved around the standard application and system development strategies of electronic records and primarily contained the core and the application of the electronic records management standards, functional requirements specification of the electronic records and the appraisal and long-term preservation of the electronic records, etc.
The symposium was presided over by Yu Zhu, Deputy Director of the Supervision Department of Archives Institutions and Records Offices of SAAC in the morning.
The symposium began with the enthusiastic speech of Adrian Cunningham, director of Strategic Relations and Personal Record of the National Archives of Australia. Based on his experience for years, Mr Cunningham introduced detailedly the development process, current situation, challenges and the development direction of the Developing and Implementing Globally Harmonised Software Specifications for Records in Business Systems. At the end of the his speech, Mr Cunningham showed particularly thanks to Jian Wang, the assistant Dean of SIRM in RUC and director of InterPARES3 team China for the great efforts she made in the translation and dissemination of “Principles and Functional Requirements for Records in Electronic Office Environments”, and showed his hope sincerely that they look forward to more co-operations in the future with Chinese group composed of SAAC and RUC.
Sherry L. Xie , Adjunct Professor of SLAIS in UBC and the Records Manager of Canadian Tourism Commission, compared the two ERMS Functional Requirements D0D5015.2和Moreq2 in her speech.
The symposium was presided over by Jian Wang in the afternoon, who was responsible for the symposium.
Professor Eastwood gave another lecture on “Critical Actions in the Chain of Preservation of Digital Records”. He stressed that it was very important to identify the critical actions in the chain of preservation of digital records, especially in the new era.
Sherry L. Xie made another speech on “Implementing ERMS: Standardization and Customization” from the customer’s perspective. Her abundant theory accomplishment and practical experience, especially her clear logical thought and precise ideation made a strong impression on all the attendances.
Anhui Province electronic records center is the pioneer in the electronic records management practice. Yuming Huang ,the Project leader and the vice chief of Archives of Anhui Provincial Archives,explained the electronic records management standards both in theory and in practice.
