Abstract
A Descriptive Analysis of Anglicisms used in Ecuadorian Newspapers
is a study which has been done analyzing the use of English words (called
anglicisms) into our language. The main goal of this research is to identify
the reasons why people have been adopted English words, also analyze the
influence of English language in our culture, in order to determine the
most common English expressions used in our daily vocabulary and to be
conscious of the unnecessary use of anglicisms in our language focusing
in Ecuadorian newspapers.
This research was made in Quito-Ecuador, taking as samples
variables as: national newspaper (El Comercio), local newspapers (Ultimas
Noticias) and tabloids (El Extra), also sub variables as: news, ads, reports,
social pages and sports.
In order to carry out this research Qualitative and Quantitative
methods were used, to determine and evaluate in which context anglicisms
are replacing our lexicon. Analytic and Descriptive methods also were used
to analyze the information collected.
The Diccionario de la Real Academia Española (DRAE) published in
2006, was used to analyze each word in the context, in order to know
foreign words accepted byRAE.
As a conclusion, anglicisms used in Ecuadorian newspapers, most of
the time are unnecessary; they affect our culture and roots, because many

Languages are changin all the time because it receives the influence
from other languages, mostly from English language. For this reason a
research on ―A Descriptive Analysis of Anglicisms Used in Ecuadorian
Newspapers‖ was done. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the
adoption of anglicisms in Ecuadorian newspapers. Anglicisms are words
borrowed from English into another language, in this case, Spanish.
Previous studies about anglicisms influence into Spanish language
have been done in other fields than newspapers as; computational,
cinematography, radio, TV and so on, some of those studies are; ―El
Desplazamiento Linguistico del Español por el Inglés‖ written by Prof.
Francisco Gimeno Menéndez published in 2005. Another study related is
―English Borrowing in Venezuelan Spanish‖ done by Yuly Asención in
2004. The study done by Paloma López Zurita in 2005 published under
the title ―Economic Anglicisms Adaptation to Spanish Linguistic System‖.
Also the study that was done by students of the UTPL among them can be
mentioned ―Barbarisms and Anglicisms in Ecuadorian Radio and Tv
programs‖; ―Anglicisms in Banners and Business Signs‖ and ―Archaisms
and Anglicisms in the Spanish Spoken in Ecuador‖. Another work that is
worth mentioning is the dictionary ―Un Millar de Anglicismos‖ written by
Carlos Joaquin Cordova and published in 1991, are some of the works
that deserve to be mentioned. However, the use of anglicisms in
to investigate on this topic to get better insights on the written language
Ecuadorians use.
The analysis of anglicisms used in Ecuadorian newspapers will
provide us information about how English is influencing our native
language, and how writers use many of these terms in newspapers, to
reach this, was nessesary a descriptive, linguistic and social analysis of
written language in Ecuadorian newspapers focusing in the use of
anglicisms, therefore to identify and analize the use of them, Analytic and
Descriptive method will be used.
This research have been done in order to achieve my Bachelor`s
degree in teaching English as a foreign language, and it was possible by
the support provided and the interest shown by the Universidad Técnica
Particular de Loja regarding to the present program. The UTPL give us the
physical and logistic facilities to carry out this investigation.
In order to carry out this research we use the bibliographic method
to collect the information, analytic and descriptive methods to do the
descriptive and statistical analysis, and the interpretation of data. The
techniques used in this project were; selection of written material,
note-taking to collect bibliographic information and interview. Besides the
instruments used were; direct observation forms, bibliographic cards,
survey forms, charts and a questionnaires.
From the beginning, the guidelines of this research were given and,
state their fulfillment.
The specific objectives are:
To determine the level of influence of the English language on the
linguistic expressions used in Ecuadorian newspapers were necessary to
analyze national newspapers (El Comercio), local newspapers (Ultimas
Noticias) and tabloids (El Extra), also sub variables as: news, ads, reports,
social pages and sports, in order to know how often anglicisms are used,
as a result of this analysis we get that, the influence of English language,
in Ecuadorian newspapers is present in all sections.
To identify syntactic and lexical anglicisms more commonly used in
newspaper material in Ecuador, this research select anglicisms in sub
variables: news, ads, reports, social pages and sports, concluding that
English expressions and English words are mostly used in technological
and business fields.
To make a deep analysis of the anglicisms found in Ecuadorian
newspapers regarding etymological, syntactic-semantic and morphological
aspects, were necessary to analyze the changes that words get when it is
adopted by our language also the context in which the anglicisms is used,
thus anglicisms acquire different changes when they are used in our
language.
To determine the written sections of Ecuadorian newspapers in
which anglicisms are mostly used, each sub variable was read in order to
that ads section uses more anglicisms.
To know the level of acceptance that Ecuadorians have on the use of
anglicisms in newspapers, a questionnaire was done to people of different
ages in groups between 15 to 25, 26 to 40 and older than 40 years old,
concluding that anglicisms are accepted between young people, while the
other group said that anglicisms are not necessary and use them is
METHODOLOGY
In order to develop the research project ―A Descriptive Analysis Of
Anglicisms Used in Ecuadorian Newspapers‖ written material as; previous
studies about it, books, magazines, dictionaries also downloading
information of different web sites related with the use of English words in
Spanish language, were selected to become familiar with the theme also
provide scientific material for the theoretical frame.
Afterward the subvariables news, ads, reports, social pages and
sports of national newspapers, local newspapers and tabloids were readed
in order to find anglicisms. In addition, a questionnaire and an interviews
have been done to people of different ages in groups between, 15 - 25, 26 -
40 and older than 40 years old, in order to know the level of acceptance of
the use of English words in our language.
Once the anglicisms were found in newspapers, using qualitative
tables, anglicisms that have been found were listed in order to determine
the frequency and the context where anglicisms are used. With the use of
quantitative tables we could determine how often anglicisms are used,
thus in national newspaper, anglicisms are often used in ―reports‖ section,
while in local newspaper and tabloids anglicisms are more frequent in ads
section. Finally, anglicisms found in all newspapers were listed with the
repetition number of times that the word was repeated, the most frequent
anglicism is the word ―internet‖ which is not accepted by RAE but it is
For the interpretation of results, a linguistic analysis of anglicisms
was done, focusing on: morphology, ethimology and syntactic-semantic
use of the word.
Comparative analysis were made to know the quantity of anglicisms
in variables as: national newspapers (El Comercio), local newspapers
(Ultimas Noticias) and tabloids (El Extra), also subvariables as: news, ads,
reports, social pages and sports, besides a sociologic analysis was made in
order to establish the acceptance of English words in our language.
The methods used to develop this research were; bibliographic
method, in order to gathering the scientific material for the theoretical
background, analytic and descriptive method in order to do the descriptive
and statistical analysis. The techniques used were; selection of written

As conclusion, English language has a big influence in our culture
also in our language, because of it, Ecuadorian newspapers use anglicisms

DISCUSSION
This investigation contrast the old concepts with the modern
concepts related with the project`s theme. In order to be familiar with some
of the main concepts it was necessary to develop a theoretical background.
Among the most important concepts that will be found in this project
are: linguistics, morphology, semantics, phonology and more, to
understand the grammatical functions of the words, after will be found the
concepts of neologisms, barbarisms and anglicisms, these concepts will
help to understand the phenomenon of anglicisms, also the concepts of
newspapers and tabloids will help to know the research field. Finally I will
include an explanation of previous studies about the theme.
Theoretical Background
Since English is one of the most important language in the world,
the other languages have been adopted English terms into their
vocabulary, Spanish, is one of these languages; furthermore, everyone
knows that English lexicon are day-to-day more used within Spanish
language; thus, English words adoption is very common, more often
between youth people also in business and technology area.
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the adoption of
English words into Spanish language, focusing in Ecuadorian newspapers.
The analysis of this borrowings will focus on: morphology, syntax and
semantic terms; also, will contain linguistic viewpoints to understand
establish the actual quantity and quality of English words loan into our
language especially in newspapers.
One reason why Ecuadorian people replace their existing words with
alglicisms could be the influence of American culture into our society.
People use anglicisms even though they are not necessary; for example,
“me voy de shoping” instead of “me voy the compras”, “car wash”
instead of “lavadora de carros”, otherwise, anglicisms are used to help us
to complete a message with a word that does not exist in our language.
In order to carry out this investigation it is important to understand
some main concepts related with the theme as:

communication between living creatures, as dolphin’s language which is a
sounds system communication, the human language is a communication
system which use sounds, symbols and words, in order to express ideas,
feelings or thoughts, used by nations or other distinct community to
communicate with other people, language can be any kind of signals such
as voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols, it could be through oral,
written communications or using expressions through body language‖.
There is a distinction between human language communications.
Everyone possess their own unique style as different mannerisms, words
used and accents, the human language communication system include
rules for combining its components, usually it may vary through country
common to find that different towns within the same country whom speak
the same language have many dialects which have been formed over time.
Furthermore, Salinas (1986), says ―El lenguaje humano tiene una
característica fundamental; es oral, necesita la presencia simultánea de de
un emisor y un receptor del mensaje, por lo que se trata de una
comunicación interactiva, el lenguaje humano es escencialmente oral y se
apoya también con gestos del cuerpo‖; that is to say, that human language
has a fundamental characteristic which is oral and simultaneously need
one person who give the message (emisor) and one person who receive the
message (receptor), thus human communication is interactive, oral but it
also use body language.
Similarly, Yuen Ren Chao (1995) says that ―language is the
interaction between people using oral sounds, symbols or body gestures.
Concluding language is the natural way of communication between
creatures, but between human creatures the fundamental characteristic is
that it is oral‖.
Linguistics According to, Salinas (1986) linguistics is, "El objetivo
directo de la linguistica como ciencia, es el estudio de la facultad humana
del lenguaje", that is to say, the objective of linguistics as science is the
study of human language faculty, furthermore, Sci-Teck Encyclopedia,
