CHRIST THE KING: Titles for Jesus are many and sometimes confusing. Today we celebrate him as

“King”. The first reading speaks of a “Son of Man”.

In the Bible that phrase can mean “merely human”

or, in contrast, “the powerful figure ushering in God’s judgment. Sometimes it apparently means

“me myself” and in other places “someone else”.

What Jesus himself is trying to communicate when he calls himself “Son of Man” is not clear. But this is always clear: he is our way and our truth and our life. Honor him as well as you can, especially by loving others as he has loved you.

PLEDGES: Beginning today I am asking your pledge of support for our building renewal campaign. A pledge is non-binding. If your circumstances change and you can give less or more, I will not complain! Rather, a pledge helps the parish make realistic plans and serves as a reminder to you. We will be asking our members to sign up sometime be- tween now and Candlemas – the final day of the Christmas Season on February 2, 2022.

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY: We are not renew- ing our buildings because of their history and beauty – even though they are historic and beautiful. Ra- ther, we need a solid base from which to do the work God and his Church have given us. We gather for worship and fellowship—so we need a solid roof over our heads. We educate our children – and we want to do so in safe, hospitable places. And we feed the hungry in our community – facilitated by our new Food Center. Your pledge is a vote of sup- port for those works, as are your participation, your volunteering, and your trusting us to help you strengthen your children’s faith.

A PLEDGE FOR HOW LONG? I hope to pay off our

roof loan by the end of 2022. But it is not absolutely necessary. Other renewal projects are pending, but none is an emergency – repairs to our front stairs and entrance; a gathering space between the church and the rectory; and various cleaning, repair, and improvement tasks inside the church itself. It would be wonderful if you can make a reasonable pledge and complete it in the next year. But some pledges will take more time to fulfill, including my own fami- ly’s promise of $100,000. Please vote your support for our parish mission, and then follow through as you own resources permit.

THANKSGIVING MASSES: This Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. We will have two Masses on Thursday: 9:00 AM in English and 11:00 in Spanish.

Join us in church if you would like. But wherever you spend the holiday, please know that we are praying with you.

FIRST COMMUNION: Next Sunday, First Commun- ion classes begin. The first two Sunday gatherings take place only in a large group – as we did for Con- firmation students. Meeting in that way lets us ad- dress some important introductory messages. It also delays the time when our young people will be meet- ing in smaller groups and in enclosed classrooms – we want to avoid spreading the coronavirus! I am so grateful to parents and teachers who have waited patiently for the program to begin. Your children will still enjoy a solid year of faith formation.

SOME PANDEMIC NOTES: I was surprised and pleased to learn recently that the vaccination rate is higher among Latino Minnesotans than in the state population as a whole. Thank you, vaccinat- ed members, and thank you to the volunteers who staffed our clinics. We had another clinic this weekend, and vaccinated a lot of 5 through 11 year olds. That is especially important as our par- ish starts First Communion instruction with 8 through 11 year olds. We will have another clinic soon – watch for details.

TWO FUNERALS: Jim Duffy and Richard Campbell were both raised in Incarnation, attending school and receiving their sacra- ments here. They raised their families else- where, but have maintained parish connec- tions over the decades. They “came home”

last Friday and Saturday, respectively, for their funerals. Please pray eternal rest for them.

ONE WEDDING: The “wedding season” in our parish usually starts in April and wraps up before the snow flies. But we do have six weddings over the winter months. Please pray for Maria Juana and Miguel Quizpe, who will pledge their lives to each other this Friday. May their holiday weekend be filled with love.

Estoy muy agradecido con los padres y maestros que espera- ron pacientemente a que comenzara el programa. Sus hijos seguirán disfrutando de un año sólido de formación en la fe.

ALGUNAS NOTAS PANDEMICAS: Me sorprendió y me complació saber recientemente que la tasa de vacuna- ción es más alta entre los latinos de Minnesota que entre la población general del estado. TRES FUNERALES: Jim Duffy y Richard Campbell se criaron en Encarnación, asistieron a la escuela y recibieron sus sacramentos aquí. Criaron a sus familias en otros luga- res, pero han mantenido conexiones parroquiales durante décadas. Ellos “regresaron a casa” el viernes y sábado pasa- do, respectivamente, para sus funerales. Mientras Anthony Segovia, de solo 16 años, sufrió un infarto causado por una condición genética – tuvimos su funeral el viernes también.

UNA BODA: La “temporada de bodas” generalmen- te comienza en abril y termina antes de las neva- das. Pero tenemos seis bodas durante este in- vierno. María Juana y Miguel Quizpe se comprome- terán el uno al otro este viernes. Que su fin de se- mana festivo se llene con amor.
