We offer you this occasional column as an ac- counting and an invitation. As an accounting:

you deserve to know how we are taking care of and renewing our historic church and proper- ties. And as an invitation: we need your finan- cial and volunteer help.

Water at the Sacred Heart altar: We first saw a large leak along the south side aisle two years ago. Our roofers found the cause – and it embodies the problems of our 115-year-old roof. A roofing tile slid down from the top of the church, bounced off the lower roof, and landed unharmed in the garden. Those tiles are indestructible, but the lower roof did not fare as well. The bouncing tile penetrated the shingles and structure below, leaving a 4” x 6”

hole. Over the next three months all the simi- lar holes will be repaired, the underlayment everywhere reinforced, the lower roofs more heavily armored – and those indestructible tiles restored to the high roof.

More about that volunteer help: Last week I asked your help readying the downstairs for fall. Can you join us on July 31 anytime be- tween 8:00 and 2:00? We will move textbooks and kitchen supplies onto rolling storage.

Then we will demolish the remaining shelves and other impediments. I bet with enough willing hands we can clean and repaint the hall from top to bottom. All that work will set the stage for erecting transparent walls in August.

Agua en el altar del Sagrado Corazón: Vi- mos caerse agua en el pasillo del sur por pri- mera vez hace dos años. Nuestros techado- res encontraron la causa, que encarna la realidad de nuestro techo de 115 años. Una teja se deslizó desde lo alto, rebotó en el te- cho inferior y aterrizó ilesa en el jardín.

Esas tejas son indestructibles, pero al techo inferior no le fue tan bien. El proyectil pe- netró abajo, dejando un agujero de 4”x 6”.

Durante los próximos tres meses, se repara- rán todos los agujeros similares, se reforzará el contratecho en todas partes, se blindarán más los techos inferiores y se restaurarán esas tejas indestructibles en el techo alto.

Más sobre esa ayuda voluntaria: Hace 8 días pedí ayuda para preparar la planta baja para el otoño. ¿Puedes venir el 31 de julio en cualquier momento entre las 8:00 y las 2:00? Trasladare- mos el equipaje de clases y cocina al almacena- miento rodante. Luego derribaremos los estan- tes y otros impedimentos. Parish Notes July 18

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: We hear more of Paul’s soaring vision in the Letter to the Ephesians today. God is making a New Humani- ty. Looking backwards, the human family was once divided and therefore incomplete – Jews versus Greeks, friends and enemies of God. Today, God has eliminated that enmity through the sacrifice of his Son on the Cross. And looking ahead, the pat- tern of the New Humanity is Jesus Christ himself, truly human and truly divine. In baptism, we have been born again in the image of God’s Son. Carry that vision with you this week.

VISITORS: We have special events at all sorts of unusual times this month – a wedding at 10:30 last Sunday; a baptism at 9:00 AM Friday. The reason is simple: families are able to travel again, and they are celebrating the sacramental blessings delayed by the pandemic. With grandparents and extended family in town, parish members are able to schedule church-based events and social gatherings. Wel- come, visitors – we are glad you are here.

REMEMBERING KAY KEANE: The family of Kay and Jim Keane gathers this week for their beloved mother’s funeral. Her children were with her when she died in February. But they decided to postpone Kay’s homegoing until more family and friends could participate. She lived a full century – not only full of years, but also full of intelligent work and conversa- tion; full of family love and good humor; full of dig- nified faithful hope. The funeral Mass is this Friday afternoon. May she enjoy life in heaven.

SUPPORT FOR RISEN CHRIST SCHOOL: As the fiscal year wrapped up a few weeks ago, we were

6 Welcome to the Church of the Incarnation - Sagrado Corazon de Jesus able to pay some obligations. I am proud to say that

Sagrado Corazon de Jesus (our non-profit partner) sent $75,000 to the parish’s consolidated Catholic elementary school. Risen Christ, half of whose stu- dents come from Incarnation families, was able to remain open for in-person classes for nearly the en- tire 2020-21 school year. The young people benefit- ed greatly, and Sagrado Corazon was proud to help.

SUPPORT FOR RETIRED RELIGIOUS: We also had accumulated a three-year obligation for the Collec- tion for Retired Religious. We thought we were caught up, but a careful review of our accounts (why we pay extra attention at the end of a fiscal year) showed we had not sent the checks. We did so this Spring, and received a lovely note of thanks for a total contribution of $19,356. Thank you, Incarna- tion members, for your generosity.

A NEW BUSINESS: Parish members Isidro and Trini opened an auto repair shop last week. Accompanied by the Vietnamese Catholic building owners we blessed IT&KB Repairs, 8516 Xylon Ave N, Brooklyn 55445. Pray their success, and call 763-225-7241 for service. And I am happy to let the whole com- munity know about any of our parishioner-owned businesses.

VOLUNTEER MORNING DOWNSTAIRS: In less than two months every square foot in the church basement will host Sunday School and hospitality.

In August we plan to create new classrooms with transparent walls. But first we need to remove the remainder of the “old stuff”, clean, and repaint. Can you help? Join us anytime between 8:00 and 2:00 on Saturday, July 31.

THANK YOU, DR. CORY: Last Sunday Dr. Deb Or- gan and colleagues hosted a retirement gathering at Incarnation for a parish member. Dr. Catherine (Cathy) Cory concluded a thirty year teaching and administration career at the University of Saint Thomas. She devoted countless hours to obtaining institutional support for and developing theological formation programs for Hispanic church leadership.

A dozen or more of our parish members have bene- fited in the last decade from Cathy’s wisdom and positive teaching. I believe you will still see Dr. Cory at the 9:00 Mass, where she has been a Eucharistic Minister for years. Congratulate her when you can.

MY BROTHER BILL’S BIRTHDAY: Another teacher of theology celebrates his birthday this week. My parents’ second oldest, Bill, was a colleague of Cathy Cory’s at Saint Thomas and is now a professor at Saint Catherine’s. Bill and colleagues have recently launched a ministerial formation program in which some parish members will participate. Thank you, my brother – and happy birthday.

Deb Organ y sus colegas organizaron una fiesta de ju- bilación en Incarnation para una feligresa. La Dra.

Catherine (Cathy) Cory concluyó una carrera de treinta años como profesora y administradora en la Universi- dad de Saint Thomas. Dedicó mucho tiempo en desa- rrollar y abogar por programas de formación teológica para líderes laicos latinos. Una docena o más de los miembros de nuestra parroquia se han beneficiado en la última década de la sabiduría y la enseñanza positi- va de Cathy. Creo que todavía verás a la Dra. Cory en la Misa de las 9:00, donde ha sido Ministra Eucarística durante años. Felicítala cuando puedas.

EL CUMPLEAÑOS DE MI HERMANO: Otro maes- tro de teología celebra su cumpleaños esta semana.

El segundo mayor de mis padres, Bill, fue colega de Cathy Cory en Saint Thomas y ahora es profesor en Saint Catherine. Bill y sus colegas han lanzado re- cientemente un programa de formación ministerial en el que participarán algunos miembros de la pa- rroquia. Gracias, hermano mío, y feliz cumpleaños.
