Retired and Senior Volunteer Program
If you are 55 years of age or older and looking for a way to stay active and healthy, are newly re-tired, or just have some free time on you hands— then volunteering is for you. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of the Community Ser-vice Society is a national program started here in Staten Island over 50 years ago that matches peo-ple who want to help, with a volunteer assignment that best suits their skills and interests. The time commitment can be as little as once a month to several days a week—depending on how much time you want to share.
As a volunteer, you can feed the hungry at soup kitchens and food pantries or by delivering meals to homebound elderly. You can visit the sick or lonely as a friendly visitor or be a companion to someone who visually impaired. RSVP volun-teers also help by tutoring children who are hav-ing difficulty learnhav-ing to read or mentorhav-ing chil-dren with frequent absenteeism. You can also help by preparing adults and recent immigrants for the high school equivalency exam, citizenship exam, or with finding employment. Some volun-teers help by providing administrative support at local non-profit organizations, while others assist local museums and cultural institutions as do-cents. With dozens of opportunities right here in Staten Island there is usually something for every-one! Plus as an RSVP volunteer, you will receive partial reimbursement for your travel and supple-mental accident insurance. To learn more about the program and to see if volunteering is right for you call 718 494-3222 or email [email protected] A little of your time can make a big difference in someone else’s life. The Blessing of Animals will take place on Thursday, October 4th the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi at 2:30 p.m. in the courtyard of St. Peter– St Paul School, 129 Clinton Avenue.
