Word of Life

Living the Word...

Today we celebrate the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. The Word of God invites us to reflect on vocation, a call that God makes to us from the womb according to his plan of salvation and in the testimony of the elect who are faithful to His mission.

In the First Reading, Isaiah the Prophet speaks of his vocational experience: “The LORD called me from birth, from my mother's womb he gave me my name...

raise up… restore the survivors of Israel; I will make you a light to the nations.”

Isaiah knows his mission and is willing to live it, trusting that God will be with him.

The Gospel presents the testimony of John the Baptist which begins with his birth.

The miraculous circumstances of his conception because of his parents advanced age, the disbelief of his father which leaves him speechless, until he utters the name John, which means: "Yahweh is merciful" causes them to wonder: who will this child become, who from his mother's womb, jumps for joy when in the presence of the mother of the Messiah. John has been selected to witness of the light, to present conversion to sinners and pave the way for the Savior. The desert is his home and school, until his manifestation in Israel. He doesn’t want to be caught up by the things of the world. In solitude he listens to the voice of God. His testimony by the way he dressed, ate, and expressed himself is counter-cultural. It is an authentic witness of the truth.

What does the testimony of John the Baptist tell us today? Today, where there is more concern for the brand of clothing, than spiritual mark, for five star hotels than families who are stars through their life witness, for the latest car model, instead of model parents, and the latest in technology instead of technology last, and of those who promise but do not fulfill?

Today, we need of true prophets and witnesses of God, who renounce and denounce sin and live in divine grace, as St. Paul tells us in the Second Reading; that men and women, according to God’s heart, do his will and bear witness to Christ, Savior of the world. Christ’s witness is not afraid to proclaim the truth, nor cares to be called crazy.

The witness, risks himself and fights for human rights, works for the Kingdom and defeats evil. The witness has no room for hypocrisy, lying, corruption, selfishness, division, laziness, religious ignorance, or indifference. To be a witness of Christ is no easy task. We are open to falling 70 times seven times. However, the Lord forgives us and lifts us: because like John, being a witness of Christ is from birth until death.

John the Baptist is the link between the Old and the New Testament. He is the last of the prophets and the first of the disciples who recognizes and proclaims: "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). John the Baptist con- tinues to be relevant for us, because, at any moment and place, we need witnesses of the light, love, forgiveness and mercy of God. Of what and who am I a witness of?

I want to thank you all, the community of St. Monica, for your prayers and support in living my Passionist mission here with you over the past six years. My Congregation has now assigned me to the community of Dodge City in Kansas. My prayers and sincere thanks to everyone. May God bless you and reward you for your generosity.

Viviendo la Palabra...

Hoy celebramos la Natividad de San Juan Bautista. La Palabra de Dios nos invita a reflexionar en la vocación, llamado que Dios nos hace desde el seno materno según su plan de salvación y en el testimonio de los elegidos que son fieles a su Misión.

En la primera lectura el profeta Isaías nos habla de su experiencia vocacional: Yahveh desde el seno materno me llamó por mi nombre para la conversión de Israel, pa- ra ser luz de las gentes y todos se salven. Isaías conoce su misión y está dispuesto a vivirla. Confiado en que Dios estará con El.

El evangelio nos presenta el testimonio de Juan el Bautista que comienza con su naci- miento. Las circunstancias milagrosas de su concepción sus padres de edad avanza- da, la incredulidad del padre que lo deja mudo, hasta pronunciar el nombre Juan, que significa: "Yahveh es misericordioso" provoca que se pregunten: ¿qué será este ni- ño? que desde el vientre de su madre, salta de gozo cuando está en presencia de la madre del Mesías. Juan ha sido elegido para ser testigo de la luz, anunciar la conver- sión a los pecadores y preparar el camino al Salvador. El desierto es su casa y escue- la, hasta su manifestación en Israel. No quiere ser atrapado por las cosas del mundo.

En soledad escucha la voz de Dios. Su testimonio de vestir, alimentarse y expresarse es contracultural. Es un testigo auténtico de la verdad.

¿Qué nos dice hoy el testimonio de Juan Bautista? Hoy que, hay más preocupación por la ropa de marca, que la marca espiritual, los hoteles cinco estrellas, a familias estrellas por su testimonio de vida, autos último modelo a padres modelo, y lo último en tecnología en vez de la tecnología para lo último. Y ¿De los que hablan y no cum- plen?

Hoy necesitamos verdaderos profetas y testigos de Dios, que renuncien y denuncien el pecado y vivan en la gracia divina, como nos dice San Pablo en la segunda lectura;

Hombres y mujeres según el corazón de Dios, que hacen su voluntad y dan testimonio de Cristo, salvador del mundo. El testigo de Cristo no tiene miedo de proclamar la verdad, ni le importa ser llamado, loco. El testigo, se arriesga y lucha por los dere- chos humanos, trabaja por el Reino y vence al maligno. El testigo no tiene lugar para la hipocresía, la mentira, la corrupción, el egoísmo, la división, la pereza, la ignorancia religiosa, la indiferencia. Ser testigo de Cristo no es tarea fácil. Estamos expuestos a caer 70 veces siete. Sin embargo, el Señor, nos perdona igual y nos levanta. Porque al igual que Juan, ser testigo de Cristo es desde el nacimiento hasta la muerte, el mar- tirio.

Juan Bautista, es el vínculo entre el Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento. Es el último de los profetas y el primero de los discípulos que lo reconoce y proclama: "He allí, el Cor- dero de Dios que quita el pecado del mundo" (Juan 1: 29). Juan el Bautista sigue sien- do relevante para nosotros porque, como en cualquier época y lugar, necesitamos tes- tigos de la luz, del amor, del perdón y la misericordia. ¿Testigo de que y de quién soy?

Quiero darle las gracias a cada uno de ustedes, comunidad de Santa Mónica, por su oración y apoyo para vivir mi misión Pasionista, durante los seis años que he estado entre ustedes. Mi Congregación me ha dado cambio a la comunidad de Dodge City, Kansas. Mi oración y sincero agradecimiento a todos. Dios les bendiga y recompense por sus detalles y generosidad.

St. Vincent de Paul thanks you for your generous donations to our food pantry and poor box. Our monthly collection is next week- end. Again we need many household items such as toilet paper, dish detergent, bath soap, toothpaste, floss, and Band-Aids. We have enough shampoo and hand soap for now. We are low on canned fruit in juice, cereal, spaghetti sauce, pasta, shelf-stable cheese, catsup, mayonnaise, mustard, and salad dressings. Recently we were given a large amount of "30 inch by 30 inch under pads" which are used to protect bedding. If you know of anyone who could use these, please ask them to call us and leave a mes- sage. Thank you again for your prayers and support of our mission to help the poor. God bless!!

BAUTISMOS: Los bautismos en español son el segundo sábado de cada mes a las 12pm y el cuarto domingo del mes a las 3pm.

PLATICAS PREBAUSTIMAL:

son el primer domingo del mes a las 3pm en el salón parroquial. No niños a la

plática. Donación de $80 por

la platica y el certificado de Bautismo. Los padrinos tienen que ser mayores de 16 años y tener sus Sacramentos, si son casados deben estar casados por la Iglesia.

BODAS: Es necesario hacer cita con el padre. Por lo menos con 6 meses de anticipación de la fecha deseada.

BAPTISM:

Baptisms in English are the 3rd Sunday of the month at 3pm. The parents and godparents need to attend a baptismal class on the 1st Sunday of the month at 3pm:

$80 donation for the class. NO CHILDREN. The godparents must be confirmed, 16 years of age, and if married, validly married in the Catholic Church.

MARRIAGE:

The couple needs to meet with a priest to begin thei r m arri age preparation. Must make appointment at least 6 months prior to date desired.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK:

This sacrament is for those with a serious illness. It should be received at the beginning of an illness. Please do not wait until death is near.
