Esta semana conmemoramos al apóstol santo To- más, el cual es normalmente recordado por haber du- dado de la resurrección de Jesucristo. La incredulidad de este santo es explicada en el Evangelio según san Juan (20:19‑31) con la famosa frase: “Si no veo en sus manos la señal de los clavos y no meto mi dedo en el agujero de los clavos y no meto mi mano en su cos- tado, no creeré.”
Los latinos somos de culturas religiosas que consi- deran la incredulidad como algo pecaminoso y camino al ateísmo. Hay que aceptar que la duda es algo nor- mal en el ser humano. Dudo que exista alguien que nunca haya dudado de su fe. Sólo al aceptar esta duda estaremos abiertos a la invitación de Jesús: “Acerca aquí tu dedo y mira mis manos; trae tu mano y métela en mi costado, y no seas incrédulo sino creyente.”
Santo Tomás aceptó esta invitación y llegó a su gran proclamación de fe: “Señor mío, y Dios mío”. La duda no es mala, para muchos es el camino a una fe más profunda y a un compromiso mayor.

As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the “Military Vicariate.” In 1985 Pope John Paul II creat- ed the “Archdiocese for Military Services, USA.” Span- ning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not or- dain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious or- ders and dioceses.
In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a
“schoolmaster,” but he sought out and ministered to Cath- olic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was wor- ried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the
“Nuns of the Battlefield” (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and minis- try of this vigorous and unique archdiocese.

Let us then hear what the Church has to say about the People of Israel. From the Declaration of the Second Vat- ican Council “Nostra Aetate”, 1965.
4. As the sacred synod searches into the mystery of the Church, it remembers the bond that spiritually ties the people of the New Covenant to Abraham's stock. Thus the Church of Christ acknowledges that, according to God's saving design, the beginnings of her faith and her election are found already among the Patriarchs, Moses and the prophets. She professes that all who believe in Christ-Abraham's sons according to faith (6)-are included in the same Patriarch's call, and likewise that the salva- tion of the Church is mysteriously foreshadowed by the chosen people's exodus from the land of bondage. The Church, therefore, cannot forget that she received the rev- elation of the Old Testament through the people with whom God in His inexpressible mercy concluded the An- cient Covenant. Nor can she forget that she draws suste- nance from the root of that well-cultivated olive tree onto which have been grafted the wild shoots, the Gentiles.(7) Indeed, the Church believes that by His cross Christ, Our Peace, reconciled Jews and Gentiles. making both one in Himself.(8) The Church keeps ever in mind the words of the Apostle about his kinsmen: "theirs is the sonship and the glory and the covenants and the law and the worship and the promises; theirs are the fathers and from them is the Christ according to the flesh" (Rom. 9:4-5), the Son of the Virgin Mary. She also recalls that the Apostles, the Church's main-stay and pillars, as well as most of the ear- ly disciples who proclaimed Christ's Gospel to the world, sprang from the Jewish people. As Holy Scripture testi- fies, Jerusalem did not recognize the time of her visita- tion,(9) nor did the Jews in large number, accept the Gos- pel; indeed not a few opposed its spreading.(10) Never- theless, God holds the Jews most dear for the sake of their Fathers; He does not repent of the gifts He makes or of the calls He issues-such is the witness of the Apostle.
(11) In company with the Prophets and the same Apostle, the Church awaits that day, known to God alone, on which all peoples will address the Lord in a single voice and "serve him shoulder to shoulder" (Soph. 3:9).(12) Since the spiritual patrimony common to Christians and Jews is thus so great, this sacred synod wants to foster and recommend that mutual understanding and respect which is the fruit, above all, of biblical and theological studies as well as of fraternal dialogues. True, the Jewish authorities and those who followed their lead pressed for the death of Christ;(13) still, what happened in His pas- sion cannot be charged against all the Jews, without dis- tinction, then alive, nor against the Jews of today. Alt- hough the Church is the new people of God, the Jews should not be presented as rejected or accursed by God,

La religión judía 4. Al investigar el misterio de la Iglesia, este Sagrado Concilio recuerda los vínculos con que el Pueblo del Nuevo Testamento está espiritualmente unido con la raza de Abraham. Pues la Iglesia de Cristo reconoce que los comienzos de su fe y de su elección se encuentran ya en los Patriarcas, en Moisés y los Profetas, conforme al misterio salvífico de Dios. Reconoce que todos los cristia- nos, hijos de Abraham según la fe, están incluidos en la vocación del mismo Patriarca y que la salvación de la Iglesia está místicamente prefigurada en la salida del pue- blo elegido de la tierra de esclavitud. Cree, pues, la Iglesia que Cristo, nuestra paz, reconcilió por la cruz a judíos y genti- les y que de ambos hizo una sola cosa en sí mismo. La Iglesia tiene siempre ante sus ojos las palabras del Apóstol Pablo sobre sus hermanos de sangre, "a quienes pertene- cen la adopción y la gloria, la Alianza, la Ley, el culto y las promesas; y también los Patriarcas, y de quienes pro- cede Cristo según la carne" (Rom., 9,4-5), hijo de la Vir- gen María. Recuerda también que los Apóstoles, funda- mentos y columnas de la Iglesia, nacieron del pueblo ju- dío, así como muchísimos de aquellos primeros discípulos que anunciaron al mundo el Evangelio de Cristo. Como afirma la Sagrada Escritura, Jerusalén no conoció el tiem- po de su visita, gran parte de los Judíos no aceptaron el Evangelio e incluso no pocos se opusieron a su difusión.
No obstante, según el Apóstol, los Judíos son todavía muy amados de Dios a causa de sus padres, porque Dios no se arrepiente de sus dones y de su vocación. La Iglesia, jun- tamente con los Profetas y el mismo Apóstol espera el día, que sólo Dios conoce, en que todos los pueblos invocarán al Señor con una sola voz y "le servirán como un solo hombre" (Soph 3,9). Como es, por consiguiente, tan gran- de el patrimonio espiritual común a cristianos y judíos, este Sagrado Concilio quiere fomentar y recomendar el mutuo conocimiento y aprecio entre ellos, que se consigue sobre todo por medio de los estudios bíblicos y teológicos y con el diálogo fraterno. Aunque las autoridades de los judíos con sus seguidores reclamaron la muerte de Cristo, sin embargo, lo que en su Pasión se hizo, no puede ser imputado ni indistintamente a todos los judíos que enton- ces vivían, ni a los judíos de hoy.
