Baptisms take place the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month at 9:00 AM. Parents and God-parents are required to attend the pre-baptismal class prior to Baptism.

Jesus departed from there and came to his native place*, accompanied by his disciples. When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands! Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

St. Mark makes sure that his readers learn about the mighty deeds of Jesus fast. In the first 5 chapters of his Gospel Jesus has shown power over demons, over the forces of nature, over sickness and even death.
This should have been enough to strengthen the faith of his followers. Yet, with chapter 6 begins the account of frustrating responses to Jesus’ acts and teachings. The lack of understanding of the disciples will be highlighted in the following chapters.
Today’s reading tells of the neighbors’ rejection and lack of understanding. Because of their lack of faith, Jesus is unable to perform any miracles in their midst. Last week’s passage encouraged the disciples to have faith and not to fear. Today, Jesus is discouraged by their doubting and skepticism.
♦ In Semitic usage, the reference to Jesus’ brothers and sisters could refer to cousins, stepbrothers or stepsisters and members of the extended family, as well as to blood sisters or brothers. Mark’s interest is not to prove Jesus’ blood family ties but to pass on the account of the rejection of his hometown friends and relatives.
♦ Jesus compares himself to previous Hebrew prophets whom the people rejected.
♦ Jesus’ humble human origin is cause for scandal.
Is he not the carpenter? This is the mystery and the awesomeness of the Incarnation!
En aquel tiempo, volvió Jesús a su tierra*
acompañado de sus discípulos. Cuando llegó el sábado, se puso a enseñar en la sinagoga y mucha gente lo escuchó con asombro. Se preguntaban:
“¿De dónde le viene todo esto? ¿Qué pensar de su sabiduría? ¿Y cómo explicar este poder milagroso que tiene en sus manos? ¿No es éste el carpintero, el hijo de María y el hermano de Santiago, José, Judas y Simón? Y sus hermanas, ¿no viven aquí entre nosotros?” Y no creían en él, todo lo contrario. Jesús les dijo: “A un profeta sólo lo desprecian en su tierra, en su barrio y en su familia”. Y no pudo hacer allí ningún milagro. A lo más, sanó unos pocos enfermos poniéndoles sus manos sobre la cabeza; y se admiraba al ver que no tenían fe. E iba predicando por todos los pueblos de esta región.

San Marcos desea que sus lectores conozcan desde un principio las hazañas y el poder de Jesús. En los primeros cinco capítulos de este evangelio, ya Jesús ha demostrado poder sobre los demonios, sobre las fuerzas de la naturaleza, las enfermedades y aún la muerte. Estas manifestaciones debían haber aumentado la fe de sus seguidores; sin embargo, el capítulo que comienza hoy nos habla de la falta de fe de sus paisanos y amigos. Es tal la falta de fe, que el Señor no puede hacer ningún milagro en su propia tierra.
El evangelio de la semana pasada animaba a los discípulos a no tener miedo y a confiar más en Dios.
Hoy vemos a Jesús desanimado ante las dudas y la falta de fe.
♦ Según la costumbre judía, la palabra “hermanos”
podría referirse a primos, familiares, medios- hermanos, etc. El propósito de Marcos no era establecer el número o los nombres de los miembros de la familia de Jesús, sino dejar claro que en su propio pueblo y entre sus amigos no encontró la fe.
♦ Jesús se compara con los antiguos profetas judíos a quienes el pueblo rechazaba.
♦ La humildad y la sencillez de sus orígenes, hace que los habitantes de Nazaret rechacen a Jesús.
¡Este es el reto de la Encarnación: verdadero Dios y verdadero hombre!
