Do It Differently This Time
Let us do something different this Advent and Christmas season. The coronavirus has taught us how vulnerable we are and how short life can be. It a wake-up call tothose who care to listen. It’s a call to a good life. What then is ‘a good life?’ “And what does the Lord require of you?”, asked Prophet Micah, “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). So, during Advent, let us focus on what God requires of us. Let us just worry less and free ourselves from the philosophy that says, ‘you MUST buy to feel good.’ Rather, focus on two gifts this year – one to Jesus and the other to yourself. To Jesus give your heart and to yourself a gift of God’s love. In other words, allow yourself to receive the gift of God’s love.
Like Lent, Advent is an annual church retreat. It is a period of special journey, a period of spiritual preparation to reenact the birth of Christ. To reenact means to relive the mystical
experience of the incarnation. Advent and Christmas allow us to ponder the love that compelled God to become man. A love that made God do what the world considers foolish.
“The person
without
the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit” 1 Cor 2:14. Thus, all the key players in that Divine comedy were spiritually ready including Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, Zachariah, baby John, the shepherds, the Magi, Simeon and Anna. They were spiritually alert, hungry and thirsty. Mary says it best: “He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty” Lk 1:53.So during this Advent, let us be among the hungry. Let us treat it as a period of personal retreat – a one-month retreat.
Remember, during this month you are giving out only two gifts, one to Jesus and one to yourself. Here is what it means to give your heart to Jesus. From today, give Jesus your quality time and attention, not your leftover time. Spend an ample amount of time praying everyday. Everyday, ask Jesus to come into your heart. Attend Mass more than once a week.
Here is what it means to give yourself a gift of God’s love. Allow God to show you mercy and love. Ask for His forgiveness – go to confession. Allow God to speak to you – read the bible, a good spiritual book and/or listen to the word of God. Practice the corporal works of mercy. If you do these things, you will experience God’s overwhelming goodness.
Pida Su perdón – vaya a confesión.

I recently ran into a former teen of mine out and about who is in their mid 20’s now. We got to talking and catching up and at one point this individual mentioned to me how much they loved Confirmation and Youth Group and how much they miss it. I asked them why they didn’t continue on as a leader or at least continue coming on their own and they told me that they didn’t have time for it. They told me about their classes, sports, family, extra curricular activities and all the crazy things that the average teen has. This individual went on to tell me that their faith is really good right now though because they are going to mission church and recently for baptized. I must have made a face because my former teen asked me what was wrong and I informed her that she was already baptized and no matter what she will always be a baptized Catholic because it leaves an indelible mark on their soul. They said that they knew and said they sometimes comes to mass so they're both. We talked for a while longer about faith, I invited her back to ministry and we went our separate ways. This week we are talking with our year 2 teens about baptism and what that means for us Catholics whether it is our own baptism or baptism of other being a witness or even a Godparent.

MARK’S JESUSMark’s Gospel is the shortest and tersest of all four. The discourses of Jesus tend to be terser as well. Mark’s portrayal of Jesus has none of the poetry of the Sermon on the Mount or the Sermon on the Plain as in Matthew or Luke, nor the extensive, reflective “I Am” discourses as in John. Mark’s Jesus “cuts to the chase,” we would say today. This is reflected quite well in today’s passage.
It is no accident that the dialogue of Jesus at this point in the Gospel according to Mark—the concluding words about the end of the world—immediately before his passion, is riddled with exclamation points and an overall sense of urgency.
We would do well to re-tool our own way of living this Advent, for we live in a world urgently in need of hearing the message of Jesus proclaimed. It’s time for us to “wake up!” and get out into the world to do it.

(Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7).

Second Reading — God is faithful; by God you were called to fellowship with the Son (1 Corinthians 1:3-9). Gospel — Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. (Mark 13:33-37).

DID YOU KNOW?
The devastating effects of verbal abuse
A study by Florida State University
found that children who were verbally
abused are more likely to experience
depression and anxiety. They are also
twice as likely to suffer with mood
and anxiety disorders throughout their
lifetime. Children who suffer such
abuse can go on to repeat the same parenting styles
they experienced thereby continuing the cycle of
abuse. Pay attention to the language you and others
use with your children. Breaking the chain of
negative behaviors starts with positive, healthy
parent-child relationships. For a copy of the

saludables. Para una copia del artículo de VIRTUS “The Devastating Effects of Verbal Abuse” (Los efectos devastadores del abuso verbal) visite
