A brief history of the city
Over the centuries, the coastline of A Coruña, a city that looks out directly onto the Atlantic, exerted an irresistible attraction on Celts, Phoenicians and Romans. In the 2nd
century CE, the latter built the Tower of Hercules, today the world’s only working Roman lighthouse, the pride of the city and declared as a World Heritage Site.
In the 9thcentury, the city suffered successive waves of attacks
by the Norman pirates. During the Middle Ages the popula-tion settled on the site that today is known as the Old Town. In 1208, Crunia received its city charter from King Alfonso IX, who also conferred a series of royal privileges on the city. A year after the Spanish Armada called in at the Port of A Coruña on its way to invade England, the corsair Francis Drake, a loyal servant of Queen Elizabeth I of England attacked the city, which was valiantly defended by the people of A Coruña, led by the local heroine María Pita. During the French invasion, A Coruña was the only city that stood up to the invading troops. Particularly worthy of mention is the
Battle of Elviña, which took place on 16thJanuary 1809 and
during which General Sir John Moore was fatally wounded whilst defending the city. Today his remains are buried in San Carlos Gardens.
The 17thand 18thcenturies were marked by intense trading
activi-ty with America and numerous Spanish and European ports. The 19thcentury was a time rapid economic, cultural and
urban development, reflected in the gallery windows that line Avenida de la Marina, the Modernist buildings and the Kiosco Alfonso… in the 20thcentury, the city became a hive
of activity, focusing on culture, progress and the future. Recent years have also seen major progress in the city’s economic, urban and cultural evolution… examples include the construction of the Sea Promenade, parks and gardens, museums, the Convention Centre, Opera House, ExpoCoruña, a venue for trade fairs, exhibitions and multi-cultural activities... which have all contributed to turning A Coruña into a cosmopolitan and forward-thinking city.
The sea, a constant figure in the history of the city of A Coruña, is the first thing that strikes visitors arriving in the city by sea, land and especially by air. The stunning views of the tidal estuary are truly unforgettable, but there is much more to discover besides.
As in every city, a tour of the “Old Town” is an absolute must. Corners rich in history, squares where time seems to have stood still, such as Las Bárbaras or Azcárraga, lined with ancient trees… visitors will also be able to admire splendid examples of Romanesque art in the churches dotted around this quarter.
Buildings such as Cornide Palace, which faces Plaza de Santa María; the headquarters of the Galician Royal Academy, housed in the former family mansion of local

writer Emilia Pardo Bazán; San Carlos Gardens, the site of the tomb of Sir John Moore and a lookout point offering stunning views of A Coruña’s bay.
Churches like the Collegiate Church of Santa María del Campo, a superb example of the Ogival Romanesque style; the churches of Santiago, Orden Tercera, the convents of Las Bárbaras and Santo Domingo are all true works of art; emblematic streets named after ancient guilds that transport us back in time to a medieval and Baroque city. In the Old Town visitors will find fascinating antique shops, situated in a unique location totally in keeping with the objects they sell, as well as traditional taverns and delightful restaurants. When night falls this area is transformed into one of the hubs of the city’s nightlife.

is lined with bars and street cafés boasting fabulous sea views. Don’t forget to visit the Domus and the Aquarium Finisterrae, intriguing science museums.
Our route takes us towards Plaza de Pontevedra and the area known as Ensanche, which reflects the cultural inter-ests of the local bourgeoisie, and was financed by the fortunes made from international trade. The streets and squares in this area boast a wealth of splendid Modernist buildings, some of the finest examples of which are to be found in Plaza de Lugo, Plaza de Pontevedra, Calle Padre Feijoo, Calle Picavia, Calle Betanzos, Calle Ferrol and Avenida Sánchez Bregua and Avenida de Linares Rivas. Visitors will find the top names in fashion here too: Loewe, Tous, Sita Murt, Adolfo Domínguez, Zara, Uterque, Maje...
Another essential stop on our route is the Opera House, home of the immensely successful Galicia Symphony Orchestra, the Mozart Festival and the Opera Festival, with
From the Sea Promenade
The Sea Promenade is the ideal point from which to start exploring the city. Its more than 13,5 kilometres make this the longest promenade in Europe, encircling the city from San Antón Castle to El Portiño. It has a bicycle lane, tram, road and pedestrian walkway. Starting from San Antón Castle, visitors will be able to admire the marina with its mooring berths and services, as well as the yachts and sailing ships that create a colourful sight all year round. Other sites of interest include the Shipping Control Tower, the Maestranza Gardens, the Equestrian Club, San Amaro Beach, the Tower of Hercules Sculpture Park and the Golf Course, before finally reaching A Coruña’s most popular and photographed monument, the Tower of Hercules, standing majestically above As Lapas Beach.
Leaving the Tower behind us, we now head towards the bay of A Coruña and its beaches: Matadero, Orzán and Riazor (1.400 metres of golden sands in the heart of the city). This is also one of the centres of the city’s nightlife, and
A city to have fun in
A Coruña has always been noted for its outgoing and extrovert character. Locals love to get out and about, en-joying an evening stroll, a shopping trip, going for tapas or meeting friends for a drink at the street cafés in winter as well as in summer. In keeping with Spain’s long-standing tradition of social gatherings in cafés, the city’s residents love to meet to chat and discuss everyday events. The stunning beaches, which attract large crowds in summer, concerts, fairs and sports events make for a packed year-round programme of events. A Coruña’s bay is the ideal backdrop for all kinds of water sports: sailing, rowing, sur-fing… The exciting range of sporting competitions includes the HRH Princess Elena Regatta, the Trainera fishing boat Regatta, the Tall Ships Race... visitors can also enjoy sports such as tennis or golf; A Zapateira is one of the top golf clubs on the Spanish circuit.
A Coruña’s nights are packed with fun and excitement, with a choice of indoor or outdoor venues. The city streets throng with young people out enjoying themselves in areas such as Orzán, Juan Canalejo, Plaza de España, Ciudad Vieja, Juan Flórez...
its impressive waterfall, and Santa Margarita Park, the site of the Science Museum and Planetarium.
Returning to the Sea Promenade, our next stop is Riazor Football Stadium, where locals and visitors alike have enjoyed unforgettable afternoons. The coastline is dotted with small coves and rocky cliffs as we walk past the Millennium Obelisk, the scenic lift that goes up to the top of Mount San Pedro, and a viewpoint offering spectacular views of the city and the cruise ships and vessels guided by the light of the Tower of Hercules, the lighthouse that stands watch over the city. Gardens, ponds, a maze, the huge guns that once defended the city are just a few of the many attractions for visitors to enjoy in this park.
The last stop on our route is El Portiño, a small fishing har-bour with a unique charm, whose spectacular sunsets draw the locals, anxious to admire the stunning views, and Bens Park, a successful landscape recovery project and proof of the city’s commitment to conserving its environment.

The city of glass
It’s well worth taking the time to explore the city centre. Leave your car and enjoy a stroll around the streets, because this is a city that is made for walking.
The centre forms the hub of the city’s economic, commercial and cultural activity, with its busy port and cruise liner dock. The perfect starting point and an absolute must on every visitor’s itinerary is Plaza de María Pita, site of the City Hall and watched over by the statue of local heroine María Pita and the eternal flame.
Yet perhaps A Coruña is best-known for its glass façade that looks out onto the sea in Avenida de La Marina. Gallery windows which are probably the finest example of this quintessential element of Galician architecture. The colonnades offer numerous street cafés and restaurants. Continuing along our route, we come to Méndez Núñez Gardens, boasting almost 150 years of history, and the site
of the Municipal Exhibition Hall Kiosco Alfonso, La Terraza, the bandstand, the fish pond with its gold and red carp, ancient trees and plants brought from far-off lands, and which is popular with children and adults all year long. Particularly worthy of note is the flower clock and calendar, where the date is changed everyday using seasonal flowers. The park is also dotted with statues of famous personali-ties such as John Lennon, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Curros Enríquez, Linares Rivas, Murguía, Fernández Latorre and Pondal, and is the site of book fairs, folk festivals and street theatre, etc. The street known as Los Cantones is home to the city’s principal bank branches and foundations (Caixa Galicia and Barrié de la Maza), as well as the Obelisk, one of the city’s best-loved monuments. Calle Real and Calle San Andrés are the district’s principal shopping streets, divided by streets lined with wine and tapas bars (Barrera, Galera, Franja...).
Back to the sea
A unique location -a peninsula jutting out into the majestic sea- has provided this city with its principal source of wealth: the port, one of the most important in Europe. Yet the port has not only determined the economic development of this city, but has also contributed to forming its open, tolerant character, and the welcoming nature of its inhabitants. In recent years, A Coruña has consolidated its position as a service and business hub. The construction of the Palexco Convention Centre, the cruise liner dock situated right in the heart of the city, the marina and the Royal Yacht Club make it possible for conference delegates and tourists to enjoy the city centre and its varied culinary and commercial offer. The freshest fish and shellfish straight from the Galician tidal estuaries, much appreciated throughout Spain, are delivered daily at first light to A Coruña’s fish market. Fishermen and shellfish gatherers take part in the auction:
a complex language and signalling system, crates of fish, a smell of salt, fish and shellfish. Voices are raised in an attempt to get the best price.
Continuing on our way through the port, we come to San Diego Park and its original aviary, and Oza, with its fishing harbour, leisure marina and another of the city’s beaches. Other areas of interest include Cuatro Caminos, Calle Barcelona, Matogrande... and of course the city’s bustling food markets: the modern Plaza de Lugo, Plaza de San Agustín, housed in a Modernist building standing opposite Plaza de Humor, Monte Alto, Santa Lucía, Elviña and Las Conchiñas.
Several slogans have been used to define A Coruña: “the City of Glass”; “the City where no one is a stranger”; “Balcony over the Atlantic”… but perhaps the one that best sums up the essence of this city is “A Coruña: a city to come back to”.

Carnival
Carnival celebrations have a long-standing tradition in A Coruña. The Monte Alto district is famous for its Festa dos Choqueiros, a fancy dress parade held on Shrove Tuesday. A few days earlier the Carnival Queen is crowned and the god Momo presides over the celebrations, which last until Ash Wednesday. Parades, street performers, a float com-petition and musical groups all form part of the celebra-tions. The Burial of the Sardine marks the end of the festivi-ties. Carnival time is the perfect opportunity for locals and visitors alike to savour the delicious laconada gallega (a traditional stew made from shoulder of pork, turnip greens, potatoes and chorizo...), followed by some tasty pancakes, known in Galicia as filloas.
San Juan (St. John’s)
The Festival of San Juan, which takes place on the night of 23rd-24th June, has been declared an event of National
Tourist Interest. Hundreds of bonfires are lit on the beaches of Riazor, Orzán and Matadero and more recently As Lapas, situated at the foot of the Tower of Hercules. Legend and fire converge to turn San Juan into a truly magical night.
The celebrations include music festivals, open-air dances, the San Juan procession, firework displays and bonfires. Each year the Queen of the celebrations -known as the Meiga Mayor- and her younger namesake, reign over the events.
The Virgen del Rosario
The Virgen del Rosario has been the patron saint of the city and its people since 1589, the year when the residents asked the Virgin to intercede in their struggle to free the city from the invading English troops. The highlight of the festi-val celebrated in her honour in the city’s Old Town is on 7th
October, with a host of sporting, leisure and cultural events. And as in every seafaring city, on 16thJuly, the city’s boats
take part in a maritime procession around the Bay of A Coruña, festooned with flowers and decorations in tribute to the Virgen del Carmen...
August: a month of celebrations!
The city’s festival lasts throughout the month of August. The packed programme of events includes craft fairs, a medieval market, book and comic fairs, bullfights, the regional associa-tions’ fair, as well as sporting events, concerts on the beach and at a range of venues throughout the city, folk music, the Teresa Herrera Football Trophy, Trainera fishing boat races, regattas, show-jumping events…the list is endless.

Beaches
of city sands
27 26
The beaches of Riazor, Orzán, Matadero,
San Amaro, As Lapas and Oza are just
a stone’s throw away
A Coruña has more than two kilometres of city beaches, making it the ideal choice for all kinds of water sports: surf-ing, sailsurf-ing, windsurfsurf-ing, scuba divsurf-ing, rowsurf-ing, canoeing... Just a short distance from Plaza de Pontevedra the beaches of Riazor (610 metres length), Orzán and Matadero (780 metres length) converge in a shell-shaped bay that looks out onto the Atlantic. Continuing along the Sea Promenade,
the next beach after Matadero is the quieter As Lapas (70 metres length), situated at the foot of the Tower of Hercules and the perfect spot from which to contemplate this ancient monument and its two thousand years of history. A little further along the Sea Promenade we come to the district known as Adormideras, and San Amaro Beach (100 metres length). In turn, Oza Beach (100 metres length) is situated on the outskirts of the city, just a short distance from Los Castros district. All the city’s beaches have been awarded Blue Flags.
