How to Heal Surgical Wounds Quickly?

According to statistics, nearly 2.5% of patients who have undergone the surgery are suffering from non-healing or slow-healing surgical wounds. Although this statistical data is quite favorable, if we see ourselves with the possibility of having ease of surgery in the upcoming future, what if we are one of those who fall under this percentage?

It can be frustrating that now you have recovered from a condition through a successful surgery but now are suffering miserably from a non-healing or infected surgical wound.

You start wondering, “Is there any possible way of speeding up the healing process after surgery?”

The answer is Yes but it completely depends on the patient’s situation and the severity of the wound infection. For example, many surgical wounds can be treated with antibiotics to prevent infection. But a patient with some underlying conditions such as health issues or other risk factors is more prone to non-healing surgical wounds.

Here are the symptoms of infection in surgical wounds:

● Red & discolored skin around the wound site

● Delayed healing

● Increased pain

● A bad odor or drainage from the wound site

● Severe swelling

● Skin feels hot to touch etc.

If a patient notices any of these symptoms, he/she should immediately have a Surgical Wound Consult with a wound doctor. In some cases, an infected surgical wound may appear dried out or deeper. Fever is also a common symptom.

What Are Non-Healing Surgical Wounds?

Surgical wounds are those that have been made by a surgeon during surgery using a scalpel. A cut is made through the skin, known as a Surgical wound. They can vary in

size and it is possible to undergo multiple incisions for one operation. Most of the time, a surgical wound is small and usually closed with sutures but sometimes they are left open to heal. However, the risk of developing an infection depends on the type of surgical wound that a patient has.

A non-healing surgical wound is a surgical wound that is not healing in the expected period. Healing in surgical wounds depends on the procedure, the location of the incision, how invasive the surgery was, and any potential complications.

Recovering From Surgery? Speed Up The Healing Process with These Tips

The wound care doctors will instruct the patients about preventive measures to avoid infection or any complications from surgery as well as taking care of surgical wounds at home. break in the skin can lead to complications. If this happens, various wound care facilities offer additional treatments for accelerating the surgical wound healing process.

Here they are as follows:

1. IV Antibiotic Therapies

This is one of the best ways to treat non-healing surgical wounds through minimal intrusive means. The doctor prescribes the patient a long course of antibiotic medication through a central catheter or PICC line that directly blends into the bloodstream. This treatment can be performed on an outpatient in the wound center or the patient’s home.

Your doctor will provide you with the essential details before the treatment.

2. Special Dressings & Therapies

All surgical wounds are covered with a special type of wound dressing. It provides the most favorable conditions for the wounds for healing while also protecting them from infection. A correct type of dressing helps decrease the healing time, provides a cost-effective solution, and ultimately improves the patient’s quality of life. Wound care at bedside provides patients with the most appropriate & personalized treatment plan depending on the individual’s situation and wound requirements.

3. Minimal Invasive & Microsurgeries

The last way to speed up the wound recovery process for surgical wounds is going through another surgical procedure after having the initial one. These are the minimal invasive & microsurgeries that eliminate extreme downtime as they have slight or no cutting/scarring at all. The patients aren’t required to take anesthesia. It has many benefits such as:

● Less invasive than traditional surgery

● No anesthesia required

● Decreased downtime

● Little or no cutting
