HUMILITY

Today’s readings praise the virtue of humility and offer concrete ways for us to become more humble. The Book of Sirach suggests a practical reason for acting with humility: humble people are more likeable than the arrogant. Even God “finds favor” with those who humble themselves. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus provides real-world sugges- tions for growing in humility and teaches us never to assume we are better than others. His words change our outward behavior and expand our hearts and minds to care about people we might have dis- missed before. This practical, almost “folksy” wis- dom about humility helps us behave better in daily life and makes our lofty goal of eternal life more accessible. Our reading from Hebrews affirms that heaven is indeed approachable. The personal love and sacrifice of Jesus have opened “the city of the living God” to us. Humility prepares us for para- dise.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Conduct your affairs with humili- ty and God will favor you (Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28- 29).

Psalm — God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor (Psalm 68).

Second Reading — You have approached Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant (Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a).

Gospel — When invited to dine, take the lowest place. Those who humble themselves will be exalt- ed (Luke 14:1, 7-14).

LA HUMILDAD

Las lecturas de hoy alaban la virtud de la humildad y nos ofrecen formas específicas para que seamos más humildes. El libro del Eclesiástico sugiere una razón práctica para actuar con humildad: las perso- nas humildes son más agradables que las arrogantes.

Incluso Dios “encuentra gracia” con quienes se ha- cen pequeños. En el Evangelio de Lucas, Jesús ofrece sugerencias de la vida real para crecer en humildad y nos enseña a nunca asumir que somos mejores que los demás. Sus palabras cambian nuestro comportamiento exterior y expanden nuestros corazones y mentes para que cuidemos por las per- sonas que antes habíamos desestimado. Esta sabidu- ría práctica, casi “popular”, sobre la humildad nos enseña a comportarnos mejor en la vida diaria y ha- ce más accesible nuestra meta noble de la vida eter- na. Nuestra lectura de la carta a los hebreos afirma que el cielo es realmente accesible. El amor personal y el sacrificio de Jesús nos abrieron “la ciudad del Dios vivo”. La humildad nos prepara el paraíso.

LECTURAS DE HOY

Primera lectura — Maneja tus asuntos con humil- dad. Humíllate y tendrás el favor de Dios (Eclesiástico 3:17-18, 20, 28-29).

Salmo — Preparaste, oh Dios, casa por los pobres (Salmo 68 [67]).

Segunda lectura — Te has acercado a Jesús, el mediador de una nueva alianza (Hebreos 12:18-19, 22-24a).

Evangelio — Cuando te inviten a comer, siéntate en el lugar menos importante. Los que se humillan serán ensalzados (Lucas 14:1, 7-14).

BAPTISMS/BAUTIZOS: Couples planning to have their child baptized in the parish are asked to phone the parish office for information re- garding classes. You are urged to do this early in the pregnancy to begin pre-birthing and baptismal preparation. Parental preparation requires registration in the parish, active participation in parish life and worship and a program of preparation before the Baptismal Celebration. Bap- tismal classes are held the first Saturday of every other month. Baptisms are celebrated the third Saturday of each month. Pre-registration and an interview are required before classes.

Se recomienda que empiecen sus preparativos con anticipación, durante el embarazo de ser posible. Preparación de los padres requiere que sean miembros de nuestra parroquia, activos en la vida y culto parroquial y que asistan a sesio- nes bautismales. Preparación Bautismal es el primer sábado de cada dos meses. Bautizos se celebran el tercer sábado del mes. Registración y una entrevista se requieren antes de bautizar.

MATRIMONY/MATRIMONIO: Couples should contact the priest for an interview and marriage preparation six to eight months prior to the pro- posed date of marriage. In the event of a previous marriage by either party, 12-15 months’ notice should be given.

Parejas deben entrevistarse con el sacerdote de 6-8 meses antes de la anticipada celebración, y para su preparación para el matrimonio. Si exis- tió un matrimonio previo por parte de alguno de los contrayentes debe darse aviso de por lo me- nos 12-15 meses antes de la entrevista.

QUINCEAÑERA: Please contact the office staff at least one year before the desired date and before other arrangements are made. Must be regis- tered parishioners and student must be attending our Religious Education Program (CCE) two years.
