1. Caracterización de la Masa de Agua Subterránea
1.1 Identificación, morfología y datos previos
La MASb Zafra-Olivenza, a la que corresponde el número de identificación 040.018 (código provisional de la MASb: 041.018), se ubica al SE de Badajoz, dentro del tramo medio del río Guadiana. Presenta una superficie total de 901,2 km², de la que el 38,9% (351,3 km2) corresponde con afloramientos de alta permeabilidad.
En el ámbito geográfico definido por los límites de esta MASb la cota máxima es de 897 m s.n.m y la mínima de 222 m s.n.m., fijándose la cota media en 490,2 m s.n.m.
Antiguamente aproximadamente la mitad de la MASb estaba incluida la Unidad Hidrogeológica 04.011 Zafra-Olivenza.
Los cauces presentes en la MASb son el río Olivenza, la Rivera de los Limonetes, el río Guadajira, el río Entrín y el río Ardila. Todos ellos tienen un escaso recorrido dentro de los límites de la MASb. Esta MASb se adscribe al sistema de explotación general.

1.2 Contexto Hidrogeológico
1.2.1 Litoestratigrafía y permeabilidad
Se ha considerado una FGP en la MASb Zafra-Olivenza: la FGP Calizas marmóreas.
La FGP calizas marmóreas está constituida por materiales carbonatados de alta permeabilidad compuestos por calizas marmóreas de la serie carbonatada de la zona Ossa-Morena y Calizas de Urda. Estos materiales forman un horizonte constante en todo el Cámbrico de la zona y de la Península Ibérica en general (IGME, 1982). La FGP se corresponde íntegramente con la FH 29: calizas marmóreas del Cámbrico inferior del mapa de síntesis litoestratigráfica a escala 1/200.000 del IGME. (ver mapa de permeabilidades).
El resto de la MASb está formada por materiales de baja y muy baja permeabilidad, consistentes en series volcanodetríticas, micaesquistos, cuarcitas, metabasitas y materiales intrusivos básicos y ácidos.
La MASb se encuentra enmarcada en las siguientes hojas MAGNA a escala 1:50.000: Alconchel (827), Barcarrota (828) y Villafranca de los barros (829), Villanueva del Fresno (852), Burguillo del Cerro (853), Zafra (854), Usagre (855), Jerez de los Caballeros (875), Fuente de Cantos (876), Llernea (877), Higuera La Real (896) y en pequeña medida, en las hojas de Olivenza (801) y Monesterio (897). Asimismo, se encuentra incluida casi en su totalidad en la hoja de Villafranca de los Barros (68) a escala 1:200.000.
1.2.2 Estructura geológica
Gran parte de la MASb se encuentra situada en los flancos del anticlinorio Olivenza-Burguillo-Monesterio, que tiene una longitud de aproximadamente 80 km con un eje en dirección NW-SE, dentro del dominio geológico de Ossa Morena. La MASb se encuentra intensamente plegada y fracturada debido a la orogenia Hercínica y a la intrusión de las rocas plutónicas que afloran en toda la zona.
Según IGME, 1982 las calizas cámbricas que forman la FGP se encuentran compartimentadas con uno o ambos extremos como zona de descarga natural al estar rodeadas lateralmente por materiales impermeables.

1.2.3 Funcionamiento hidrogeológico
La FGP es de carácter libre, por lo que su recarga se produce por medio de la infiltración directa de la precipitación. El estudio IGME, 1982 indica que las calizas Cámbricas normalmente se encuentran muy fisuradas y karstificadas pero con un abundante suelo arcilloso que dificulta la capacidad de infiltración La descarga se produce hacia la red de drenaje superficial por medio de manantiales que drenan la FGP en contacto con los materiales de baja permeabilidad subyacentes y hacia la red hidrográfica.

2. Estaciones de de control y medida de caudales
En esta MASb no existen redes hidrométricas de control de aguas subterráneas ni actuales ni históricas.
Tampoco existen estaciones de control de aforos oficiales ni se han encontrado estudios en los que se hayan realizado aforos con el fin de obtener información sobre los materiales que forman la MASb. Existen estaciones de control fuera de los límites de la MASb que no han sido de interés por encontrarse en zonas influenciadas, aguas abajo de diversos embalses.

Identificación y caracterización de los tramos de río
relacionados con acuíferos
No se han definido tramos río en relación con la FGP Calizas marmóreas debido a la escasa información existente en la MASb. Presuntamente todos los cauces de la MASb son ganadores gracias al drenaje de la FGP cuando se encuentra en contacto con los materiales impermeables de la zona.
La capacidad de la FGP como reguladora de los recursos hídricos parece escasa. El PIAS (IGME, 1979) menciona la poca importancia hidrogeológica de la serie carbonatada cretácica debido a la reducida extensión de sus afloramientos, a la distribución heterogénea de los mismos y a la alternancia de pizarras en la serie. También refleja la existencia de meses en los que la cabecera del río Guadajira ha permanecido seca (según los datos de la estación 4162 en Feria) durante el periodo 1965-1970, lo que parece indicar una escasa regulación por parte de la FGP al menos en esta zona.
El informe IGME, 1982 menciona que “el caudal de base en la estación 4164 es prácticamente nulo pues en diversos y prolongados períodos no circula el agua en absoluto”. Dicha estación se encuentra situada en la Rivera de los Limonetes, en la MASb 040.017 Tierra de Barros, aguas abajo del nacimiento de la Rivera en la MASb Zafra-Olivenza (ver mapa de estaciones de control y medida). Así mismo, concluye que “los acuíferos situados en la cuenca tienen una baja capacidad de regulación natural producto posiblemente de unas reservas muy bajas”.

4. Manantiales
4.1 Manantiales principales
Todos los manantiales de la MASb se han considerado resto de manantiales al no haberse definido ningún tramo de relación río-acuífero.
4.2 Resto de manantiales
Existen 30 manantiales en la MASb definidos en este apartado. Estos manantiales resultan del contacto de los materiales que forman la FGP (las calizas Cámbricas) con los materiales impermeables subyacentes o de fracturas por las que mana el agua. En general estos manantiales son de escaso caudal, siendo, la gran mayoría, inferiores a 4 l/s (el 60% de los manantiales tienen un caudal igual o menor de 1 l/s) según los datos del inventario de manantiales del IGME. Además existe un manantial inventariado con más de 700 l/s ubicado en materiales putónicos de baja permeabilidad que sería interesante estudiar.
