Principal’s Message
Happy Gaudete Sunday and third week of Advent focused on JOY! Gaudete is Latin for "Rejoice, Ye" and we celebrate this week of being that much closer to Christ's birth. The lighting of the rose colored candle is a special reminder that we are joyfully preparing our hearts for Christ and drawing ever closer to God in our prayer life. In our parish, we have scheduled a penance service during this week on Friday to encourage the faithful to participate in reconciliation and purification as the Advent season draws closer to Christmas. We have our Posada on the 18th as a way to celebrate the Nativity story and come together as a community in prayer and celebration. In your own homes, you may be seeing family and friends with whom you haven't gathered in awhile as you celebrate the season. And in our school, we continue to joyfully study and work together as we come closer to our Christmas break. The anticipation of Christ's birth is palpable now, and our fervent preparation becomes even more excited. Have you seen our tree in the Auditorium? The donation of a live tree this year is an especially joyful gift. We wish you a wonderful third week of Advent and hope your prayer life continues to blossom in this season.

¡Feliz domingo de Gaudete y tercera semana de Adviento centrada en la ALEGRÍA! Gaudete en latín significa "Regocíjate, Ye" y celebramos esta semana de estar mucho más cerca del nacimiento de Cristo. El encendido de la vela de color rosa es un recordatorio especial de que estamos preparando con alegría nuestros corazones para Cristo y acercándonos cada vez más a Dios en nuestra vida de oración. En nuestra parroquia, hemos programado un servicio de penitencia durante esta semana el viernes para animar a los fieles a participar en la reconciliación y la purificación a medida que la temporada de Adviento se acerca a la Navidad. Tenemos nuestra Posada el día 18 como una forma de celebrar la historia de la Natividad y unirnos como comunidad en oración y celebración. $900,000 for renewal of our own parish legacy. This is an important call to all Catholics in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to give not only to their local parishes but also to contribute to a renewal of the entire diocese through an increase in vocations, expansion
of prison and hospital ministry, and increasing of youth ministry and Catholic school e orts. Every parish in the diocese will be participating at some point, and Our Lady of Sorrows completes its campaign at the end of January! If you haven't had a chance to hear

Move a Thon Fundraising Packets Distributed!

Our annual Move a Thon is scheduled for February 4th! We will again have running coupled with students doing movements and exercises before their time to run laps! There will also be a family photo scavenger hunt around the local community near our school to be able to engage our families in their own movement, too! The packets have been sent home and the student kick o assembly will be on Tuesday, December 21. All parents who wish to purchase shirts must have their orders in by December 22 and shirts are $12.
Limited extras will be available for purchase on the day of our Move a Thon. A reminder that all students must raise $50 per student to support the school's fundraising e orts. Any family who does not submit at least $50 of fundraising will have a $50 charge added to their March tuition.

Las Posadas at Notre Dame / Las Posadas en Notre Dame
Las Posadas is an Advent tradition from Mexico where families form a procession symbolizing the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem in search of shelter. There is singing, prayer, and of course food!
This Saturday, December 18, at 5pm, we will host a Posada for Notre Dame and Our Lady of Sorrows families. There will be traditional food, warm drinks, treats, and at least one piñata along with performances and celebration. Due to weather concerns, the event is inside and masks will be required when not eating.
Thanks to our generous sponsors, the event is FREE to attend and includes prayer, food, and fun for the whole family!
Las Posadas es una tradición de Adviento de México donde las familias forman una procesión que simboliza el viaje de María y José a Belén en busca de refugio. ¡Hay cantos, oración y, por supuesto, comida!

Advent is a time to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Lord. With themes of hope, love, joy, and peace, we make sure that our hearts and minds are intent on the birth of Christ and the ways that God blesses us in our lives. There will be a special penance service on December 17, 2021 at Our Lady of Sorrows to experience the Sacrament of Reconciliation before celebrating Christmas with your families. There are also Advent Masses each weekend leading up to Christmas where we as a community light the next candle in the Advent wreath and hear the Gospel messages that prepare us for Christ’s birth. Our Family Mass will take place on December 19th where the 5th grade will host as we head into the week before Christmas. The Christmas Vigil at 5:30pm on Christmas Eve will showcase some of our students acting out the Gospel message while it is proclaimed. On Sunday, December 26 there is a special blessing for all families at all Masses to celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. We invite all of our families to see this start of the new Liturgical Year as a time for renewing their commitment to Mass and to celebrate the sacrament of Eucharist each week as a family! It is a great way to keep Christ as the center of the family and to show your children how their own Catholic faith is alive in your family.
El Adviento es un tiempo para preparar nuestro corazón para la venida del Señor. Con temas de esperanza, amor, gozo y paz, nos aseguramos de que nuestro corazón y nuestra mente estén concentrados en el nacimiento de Cristo y las formas en que Dios nos bendice en nuestras vidas. Habrá un servicio especial de penitencia el 17 de diciembre de 2021 en Nuestra Señora de los Dolores para experimentar el Sacramento de la Reconciliación antes de celebrar la Navidad con sus familias. Each weekly devotion is designed to lead your family to open their Bibles, discuss the Bible passage, pray together, and create special memories that strengthen your hope, joy, love, and peace with God and with others.
Week 3 - JOY
DISCUSS AS A FAMILY-When was the last time you heard someone tell you something that was exciting?
Can you remember the last time someone told you something that was important? Have you ever heard an announcement that made your eyes get really big in surprise?
Today, we are going to read about a really big announcement in the Bible. An announcement is when someone tells something to someone else, usually something that they didn’t already know. What kind of announcement do you think we’re going to learn
about? Something exciting, something important, or something surprising? (Or all three!)Let’s read and find out!
READ AS A FAMILY- Luke 2:8-20
EXPLANATION OF VERSE What an announcement! This special news didn’t come in a way we might expect today, like a text message, email, or letter. No, this important news came directly from an angel from heaven. Can you picture it? Imagine standing outside on a dark night, and suddenly angels appear with exciting news of great joy just for you. How do you think you would feel? The Bible says the shepherds were terrified at first, but their fear quickly turned to joy as they heard the news of the promised Messiah being born.
Did you notice what the Bible said the shepherds did next? They “hurried o ” to see Jesus (Luke 2:16). After spending time with Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, the shepherds “reported the message they were told (from the angels) ... and all who heard it were amazed” (Luke 2:17-18). Then they went back to the field “glorifying and praising God for all the things they had seen and heard” (Luke 2:20). What an announcement of great joy! The exciting news of Jesus leads us to respond by joyfully worshiping Him. As we worship Jesus, we will be able to share our excitement about the good news of Jesus with anyone who will listen. What great joy has come into the world!
PRAY AS A FAMILY- Praise God for sending Jesus into the world. Ask for His help to share this joyful news with others this Christmas season.

EXPLICACIÓN DEL VERSÍCULO ¡Qué anuncio! Esta noticia especial no llegó de la forma que podríamos esperar hoy, como un mensaje de texto, correo electrónico o carta. No, esta importante noticia vino directamente de un ángel del cielo. ¿Puedes imaginártelo? Imagínese estar parado afuera en una noche oscura, y de repente aparecen ángeles con noticias emocionantes de gran alegría solo para usted.
¿Cómo crees que te sentirías? La Biblia dice que los pastores estaban aterrorizados al principio, pero su miedo rápidamente se convirtió en gozo al escuchar la noticia del nacimiento del Mesías prometido.
¿Notaste lo que dice la Biblia que hicieron los pastores a continuación? Se “apresuraron” a ver a Jesús (Lucas 2:16). NDS Early Education is Growing!

The Notre Dame Preschool and PK is expanding! We are looking to continue to grow the program for our littlest Saints. As we continue to have interest in our Early Education program (preschool and PK) we are looking for help from our existing families to promote our preschool program to friends and family and to refer any friends and family who would like to work for Notre Dame! The Preschool/PK program has an immediate need for a third teacher to help in the expansion process. There are also special incentives for current families who have younger children who are of preschool age. There is a way to receive $1000 o tuition for next year! There are also special incentives for our current families who refer students who ultimately enroll in preschool. Spread the word that Notre Dame has a place for the youngest Saints to start their journey in education!

Our “can build” contest and annual food drive for Catholic Charities is taking place on December 21-22. Please remember to send canned food donations with your child to school. Each class will create a sculpture that captures the spirit of the Christmas season and every single can of food will be donated to our local Catholic Charities/Food Bank to help those most in need this winter.

Fun and Festive Activities December 20, 21, 22!

Monday, December 20 - 6pm Christmas Concert at Our Lady of Sorrows Church featuring Kindergarten, Acapella Lunch Club, Choir, Beginning Band, and Advanced Band, along with some alumni accompaniment
Tuesday, December 21 - Can Build Day and SNOW DAY! Students will spend the morning building sculptures with their cans. Then after recess there will be snow delivered for our students to have a school families event in the snow! We ask all students to bring a change of clothes, wear pants for boys or leggings under skirts for the girls, outdoor jackets, and bring gloves and hats if you have them. You can even send the clothes with your students ahead of time to be kept in the classrooms. The change of clothes will let students really get into the snow and have a great time!
Wednesday, December 22 - Pink/Purple Free Dress (we will be heading to Mass, so no sweats or very casual attire please) for the end of Advent. It will also be a half day dismissal after Mass with NO EXTENDED CARE. This is the o cial first day of our Christmas Break and we want to be sure our students, families, and faculty get a head start on spending time in celebration with their families!
Thursday December 23 - NO SCHOOL
Friday, December 24 - 5:30pm Christmas Eve Family Mass. Students from Notre Dame and Religious Education will be acting out the Gospel in costumes while it is being proclaimed. Join us!

Uniforms Update - Be Prepared!

We will be phasing out the embroidered logo for all uniforms in January. As of February 1, all student uniforms available for sale in the used uniform store will only be the heat sealed patch. Students must be wearing Dennis Uniforms with our logo. Please bring any used uniforms into school so that they can be resold to students who are seeking Dennis uniforms! The more that we build up our own uniform store, the more that our families will have the benefit of Dennis uniforms.
Anything on the lost and found rack not claimed by Christmas break will be added to the used uniform store. Lost and found will be kept by the front o ce until or the auditorium until Christmas break.

Our Art Club meets on Thursdays at lunch time out at the covered eating area or in Ms. Taghreed's classroom. The club is open to all grades K to 8!
