GOSPEL MEDITATION ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

July 22, 2018 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Now what?" It's a difficult thing to hear, isn't it? The train comes late, a child unexpectedly cries, and the latest public policy debate flares up in the news. Life throws us curveballs, and we have no choice but to adapt. Jesus and the Apostles find themselves in that exact situation in today's Gospel.

The Apostles have returned from their two-by-two missionary journey. As Jesus hears all of their stories, he knows they need time to recover and refresh. "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while." Their wilderness retreat is short-lived, however, as eager crowds discover their location.

Jesus is well aware of the needs of his disciples. Still, as he looks out at the crowd, "His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd." The rest break is over. "He began to teach them many things."

For those of us who have experienced a taste of much-needed relaxation only to have it taken away abruptly, perhaps we surmise what the Apostles might have been feeling in that mo- ment. But Jesus isn't being inconsiderate of the Apostles needs. He offers them - and us - a lived lesson. St. John Paul II wrote, "The whole of Christ's life was a continual teaching: his silences, his miracles, his gestures, his prayer, his love for peo- ple, his special affection for the little and the poor, his ac- ceptance of the total sacrifice on the Cross for the redemption of the world" (On Catechesis in Our Time, 9). In Jesus' choice to teach, we see all of these things: sacrificial love, concern for the marginalized, and priority of people's needs over personal preference. These aren't abstract ideals. They're lived realities as we strive to live and love like Jesus. When a new obstacle confronts you in your life, how do you respond?

ALENTAR ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA

22 de Julio de 2018 16º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

"¿Ahora que?" Es algo difícil de escuchar, ¿no es así? El tren llega tarde, un niño llora inesperadamente, y el último debate de política pública se desata en las noticias. La vida nos lanza curvas, y no tenemos más remedio que adaptarnos. Jesús y los Apóstoles se encuentran en esa situación exacta en el Evange- lio de hoy.

Los Apóstoles han regresado de su viaje misionero de dos por dos. Cuando Jesús escucha todas sus historias, sabe que nece- sitan tiempo para recuperarse y refrescarse. "Vengan ustedes a un lugar desierto y descanse un rato". Sin embargo, su retiro en el desierto es efímero, ya que las multitudes ansiosas descu- bren su ubicación. Jesús es muy consciente de las necesidades de sus discípulos. Aún así, mientras mira a la multitud, "su corazón se conmovió por ellos, porque eran como ovejas sin pastor". El descanso se acabó. "Empezó a enseñarles muchas cosas".

Para aquellos de nosotros que hemos experimentado el gusto de la relajación tan necesaria para que nos la quiten abrupta- mente, tal vez conjeturemos lo que los Apóstoles pudieron haber estado sintiendo en ese momento. Pero Jesús no está desconsiderando las necesidades de los Apóstoles. Él les ofre- ce a ellos, y a nosotros, una lección vivida. San Juan Pablo II escribió: "Toda la vida de Cristo fue una enseñanza continua:

sus silencios, sus milagros, sus gestos, su oración, su amor por las personas, su especial afecto por los pequeños y los pobres, su aceptación del total sacrificio en la cruz para la redención del mundo "(Sobre la catequesis en nuestro tiempo, 9). En la elección de Jesús para enseñar, vemos todas estas cosas: amor sacrificial, preocupación por los marginados y prioridad de las necesidades de las personas sobre las preferencias personales.

Estos no son ideales abstractos. Son realidades vividas mien- tras nos esforzamos por vivir y amar como Jesús. Cuando un nuevo obstáculo te enfrenta en tu vida, ¿cómo respondes?
