When Jesus asked the Samaritan woman for a drink of water, He opened the door for a life changing relationship with Him. Scripture says her testimony drew many others to Him as well. We, too, must be ready to respond whenever and wherever the Lord speaks to us and be prepared for it to change our lives!

Third Sunday of Lent
Ex 17:3-7; Ps 95; Rom 5:1-2, 5-8; Jn 4:5-42 or 4:5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42 This third Sunday of Lent is characterized by the Jesus’ famous conversation with the Samaritan woman, recounted by the Evangelist John. The woman went every day to draw water from an ancient well that dated back to the Patriarch Jacob and on that day she found Jesus sitting beside the well, “wearied from his journey” (Jn 4:6).
In the encounter with the Samaritan woman the symbol of water stands out in the foreground, alluding clearly to the sacrament of Baptism, the source of new life for faith in God’s Grace. […]“Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him”, Jesus said, “will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (Jn 4:14). This water represents the Holy Spirit, the “gift” par excellence that Jesus came to bring on the part of God the Father. Whoever is reborn by water and by the Holy Spirit, that is, in Baptism, enters into a real relationship with God, a filial relationship, and can worship him “in spirit and in truth” (Jn 4:23, 24), as Jesus went on to reveal to the Samaritan woman. Thanks to the meeting with Jesus Christ and to the gift of the Holy Spirit, the human being’s faith attains fulfilment, as a response to the fullness of God’s revelation.

God’s Gift of Forgiveness
In the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, also called confession, we meet the Lord, who wants to grant forgiveness and the grace to live a renewed life in him. In this sacrament, he prepares us to receive him free from serious sin, with a lively faith, earnest hope, and sacrificial love in the Eucharist. The Church sees confession as so important that she requires that every Catholic go at least once a year. The Church also encourages frequent confession in order to grow closer to Christ Jesus and his Body, the Church. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, we seek forgiveness and repentance, let go of patterns of sin, grow in the life of virtue, and witness to a joyful conversion. Since the graces of the sacrament are so similar to the purpose of the New Evangelization, Pope Benedict XVI has said, “The New Evangelization . . . begins in the confessional!”
During Lent—in addition to the various penitential services during which individual confession takes place—we bishops and priests will be making ourselves available often for the individual celebration of this sacrament. We pray that through the work of the Holy Spirit, all Catholics—clergy and laity— will respond to the call of the New Evangelization to encounter Christ in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Come to the Lord and experience the extraordinary grace of his forgiveness!

Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma
Ex 17:3-7; Ps 95; Rom 5:1-2, 5-8; Jn 4:5-42 or 4:5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42 Este tercer domingo de Cuaresma se caracteriza por el célebre diálogo de Jesús con la mujer samaritana, narrado por el evangelista san Juan. La mujer iba todos los días a sacar agua de un antiguo pozo, que se remontaba a los tiempos del patriarca Jacob, y ese día se encontró con Jesús, sentado, “cansado del camino” (Jn 4, 6).
En el encuentro con la Samaritana, destaca en primer lugar el símbolo del agua, que alude claramente al sacramento del Bautismo, manantial de vida nueva por la fe en la gracia de Dios. “El que beba del agua que yo le daré —dice Jesús—, nunca más tendrá sed. El agua que yo le daré se convertirá dentro de él en un surtidor de agua que salta hasta la vida eterna” (Jn 4, 14). Esta agua representa al Espíritu Santo, el “don” por excelencia que Jesús vino a traer de parte de Dios Padre. Quien renace por el agua y el Espíritu Santo, es decir, en el Bautismo, entra en una relación real con Dios, una relación filial, y puede adorarlo “en espíritu y en verdad” (Jn 4, 23.24), como revela también Jesús a la mujer samaritana. Gracias al encuentro con Jesucristo y al don del Espíritu Santo, la fe del hombre llega a su cumplimiento, como respuesta a la plenitud de la revelación de Dios.

El Regalo de Dios del Perdón
En el Sacramento de la Penitencia y la Reconciliación, también conocido como confesión, nos encontramos con el Señor que nos quiere ofrecer su perdón y su gracia para vivir una vida renovada en Él. Por medio de este sacramento, Él nos prepara para recibirlo en la Eucaristía limpios de pecado grave, con una fe viva, una esperanza intensa y un amor purifi-cador. La Iglesia considera a la confesión tan importante, que requiere que cada católico se confiese por lo menos una vez al año. La Iglesia también nos anima a practicar la confesión con frecuencia para poder crecer más cerca de Jesucristo y de su Cuerpo que es la Iglesia. Por la gracia del Espíritu Santo buscamos el perdón y el arrepentimiento, nos liberamos de los hábitos del pecado, crecemos en una vida de virtud, y somos testigos de una conversión gozosa. Como las gracias que confiere este sacramento son muy similares al propósito de la Nueva Evangelización, el papa Benedicto XVI ha dicho que “La Nueva Evangelización . . . ¡comienza en el confesionario!”
Durante la Cuaresma —además de los diferentes servicios penitenciales en los cuales se llevan a cabo confesiones individuales— los obispos y sacerdotes estaremos disponibles con frecuencia para celebrar el sacramento de la penitencia de forma individual. Oramos para que por medio del Espíritu Santo, todos los católicos — sacerdotes y laicos— respondan al llamado de la Nueva Evangelización a encontrarnos con Cristo en el Sacramento de la Penitencia y la Reconciliación. Acudan al Señor y experimenten ¡la extraordinaria gracia de su perdón!
