Religion is often said to be the answer to life’s
question, but what strikes me as odd is none of the Easter stories from the gospel begin with answers. Two weeks ago on Easter Sunday we heard that when the disciples go to the empty tomb they are filled with fear and wonder and left the tomb with doubts and confusion (Mtt. 28:1-10). Last week we heard how one of the Apostles, Thomas, refused to believe the weak-kneed witness of the other Apostles who were hiding behind locked doors, quaking in their sandals (Jn 20: 19-31). Today we hear that two disciples while walking down a road to a town called Emmaus, are stunned by the crucifixion and hurt by the events of Good Friday. They were hurt because Jesus who they had placed all their hopes in was dead what was left for them to do? (Lk 24: 13-35).
The story of the encounter with Christ on the road to Emmaus is probably one of the best-known of the resurrection stories, and we gain an insight into God and our
relationship to him through Jesus. When we gather for the “breaking of the bread,” the Eucharist, we do so because we believe in the risen Christ, just as the disciples did. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we too have questions, doubts, and difficulties not only in our private life but also in our spiritual life. We may be worried whether our marriage will survive, will we get into the collage we apply too, will our children turn out “OK,” or can we comfort a sick relative or friend. When we are trouble and confused, Jesus is present in the Bread and Wine of the Eucharist; our participation in the Mass means nothing if it doesn’t change our life. Jesus is not mere supplier of answers to our burning question; for he embraced the very burning questions of what it means to be human. He embraced our fear of death.
Today’s message is so very simple, so very basic to our faith; Jesus is our friend, our companion. The word companion comes from the Latin for “bread bearer,” and
Jesus is indeed our Bread of Life in the Eucharist. Because he is our friend, he forgives us everything we are sorry for. He loves us no matter what we have done or not done, not matter what our society had done to us, or of what advantages we have been deprived. What Jesus asks in return for his
presence in our midst is that we share the awe and wonder we feel in his love; for as we pray in today’s Preface “In him a new age has dawned, the long reign of sin is ended, a
broken has been renewed, and man and woman are once again made whole.”
Fr. Bill
