!HEY NOW!
This past Tuesday, on February 1st we not only began a new month, but more importantly we began a journey through Black History Month. I am sure that most all of those reading this note could come up with at least one prominent person that changed this country by standing up (or sitting down in some instances), and making sure that they and others of color were recognized as human beings deserving the dignity God bestowed upon them. This month should be a time when children learn about some heart- breaking and sad moments in our history, but in some cases educators are being stopped from teaching by the legislators in various states.
In some places children can hear about Jackie Robinson and how he broke the color barrier in baseball;
however, discussion of why he, and others, were banned before that cannot take place. Teachers can point out on a map Rosewood, Florida and Tulsa, Oklahoma, but they cannot talk of the racial atrocities committed in those locations. Marvin Gaye, (a singer and songwriter whose music I remember growing up with) can be mentioned, but the words of his music from a song like “What’s going on?” is forbidden.
What is going on in our country and our world when we cannot look back upon what we have done wrong in our quest to become ever better human beings. Every human institution has been imperfect and will continue to be imperfect simply because human beings are imperfect (and if we look at it in a simply Catholic perspective humans are sinners). I don’t say this to put us down, but to make us want to grow to be better. When we look back at what was done wrong then we know which way to orient ourselves to do better, to be more conscious of the reality others face and to be willing to walk in their shoes if even for one moment.
A priest tells a story about when he was in seminary and was out with his classmates for the evening. It was late when they were driving back to the seminary grounds and for some reason they were pulled over. As the officer approached the car he asked this young man for his license and registration, and as he did he asked the passengers if they were alright. They told him that yes, and they couldn’t understand what was happening as none of them were drinking. After a check the officer released them, but told the driver to be careful. As they finished their journey back to the seminary the classmates were still wondering what just happened. The driver (the priest that now serves in Atlanta) said that it was not the first time he, a Black man, was pulled over for just driving.
For myself and some reading this note will never fully know how racism has become a part of society and how in being ‘white’ we are privileged, but that shouldn’t stop us from wanting to learn more. It should actually spur us on to want to do more for our sisters and brothers that have to live in fear, not for anything that they have done or do, but simply because their skin is not white. Our faith teaches us that there is neither, ‘Jew or Greek, slave or free person’, but only that we are all one in Christ Jesus. We cannot help but notice the difference in the outward appearance of others (so let us not say we cannot see color), but we should know that the differences of humanity are given to the world as a gift by God. For despite our differences we are united by one Spirit of God that bestows the dignity of God in all of us. May we never stop learning about all of our sisters and brothers. May we never want to forbid our children or their children to learn the history of our country and our world no matter how hurtful it is to retell those stories.
May we celebrate this month as a reminder that racism has been a part of our country’s history and still endures this day. If we try to tell ourselves that it is not, I can only respond by say, ‘what is going on?’

El martes pasado, el 1 de febrero, no solo comenzamos un nuevo mes, sino que, lo que es más importante, comenzamos una jornada a través del mes de la historia de las personas de color. Estoy seguro de que la mayoría de los que lean esta nota podrían pensar en al menos una persona prominente que cambió este país poniéndose de pie (o sentándose en algunos casos) y asegurándose de que ellos y otras personas de color fueran reconocidos como seres humanos, merecedores de la dignidad que Dios les otorgó. Este mes debería ser un momento en el que los niños aprendan sobre algunos momentos tristes y desgarradores de nuestra historia, pero en algunos casos los legisladores están impidiendo que los educadores enseñen en varios estados.
En algunos lugares, los niños pueden escuchar acerca de Jackie Robinson de cómo rompió la barrera del color en el béisbol; sin embargo, la discusión de por qué a él y otros les fue prohibido jugar antes de eso, no podía hablarse. Toda institución humana ha sido imperfecta y seguirá siendo imperfecta simplemente porque los seres humanos son imperfectos (y si lo miramos desde una perspectiva simplemente católica, los humanos son pecadores). No digo esto para menospreciarnos, sino para hacernos querer crecer para ser mejores. Cuando miramos hacia atrás a lo que se hizo mal, entonces sabemos de qué manera orientarnos para hacerlo mejor, para ser más conscientes de la realidad que enfrentan los demás y estar dispuestos a caminar en sus zapatos, aunque sea por un momento.
Un sacerdote cuenta una historia de cuando estaba en el seminario y salió con sus compañeros de clase por la noche. Era tarde cuando conducían de regreso a los terrenos del seminario y por alguna razón los detuvieron.
Cuando el oficial se acercó al automóvil, le pidió a este joven su licencia y registro, y mientras lo hacía, les preguntó a los pasajeros si estaban bien. Le dijeron que sí y que no entendían lo que pasaba porque ninguno bebía. Después de una verificación, el oficial los soltó, pero le dijo al conductor que tuviera cuidado. Cuando terminaron su viaje de regreso al seminario, los compañeros de clase todavía se preguntaban qué acababa de pasar. El conductor (el sacerdote que ahora sirve en Atlanta) dijo que no era la primera vez que él, un hombre negro, era detenido solo por conducir.
Para mí y para algunos que lean esta nota, nunca sabremos por completo cómo el racismo se ha convertido en parte de la sociedad y cómo somos privilegiados por ser "blancos", pero eso no debería impedirnos querer aprender más.
De hecho, debería impulsarnos a querer hacer más por nuestros hermanos y hermanas que tienen que vivir con miedo e incertidumbre, no por nada de lo que hayan hecho, sino simplemente porque su piel no es blanca. Nuestra fe nos enseña que no hay ni judío ni griego, esclavo ni libre, sino que todos somos uno en Cristo Jesús. No podemos dejar de notar la diferencia en la apariencia externa de los demás, pero debemos saber que las diferencias de la humanidad se le dan al mundo como un regalo de Dios. Porque a pesar de nuestras diferencias estamos unidos por un Espíritu de Dios que otorga la dignidad de Dios en todos nosotros. Que nunca dejemos de aprender acerca de todas nuestras hermanas y hermanos. Que nunca queramos prohibir a nuestros hijos o a sus hijos que aprendan la historia de nuestro país y de nuestro mundo por más hiriente que sea volver a contar esas historias. Que celebremos este mes como un recordatorio de que el racismo ha sido parte de la historia de nuestro país y aún perdura este día.
Si tratamos de decirnos a nosotros mismos que no lo es, solo puedo responder diciendo, '¿qué está pasando?' En la Paz de Cristo,
