EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME (B)

A

fter the multiplication of the bread and fish, the peo-ple are looking for Jesus because they recognized that He could feed them for free… with a miracle. They thought that with Him their future was assured: no more strug-gling to find daily food. Maybe other needs too could be taken care of very easily, with a miracle.

The people of Israel (first reading), suffering hunger and thirst in the desert, regret of having followed Moses in the dream of finding freedom and building a nation for themselves. They miss “slavery,” because then they had enough food, even though they were not free.

When Jesus tells the crowds that He will give them “a bread from heaven,” so that they will never feel hungry again, they ask immediately with expectation, “give us that bread.” The readings want to help us understand that even though we have legitimate basic needs (food, clothing, shelter, belonging, love, etc.) and we need to take care of them, there are other needs that, as human beings, we should try to take care. The people of Israel are faced with the challenge of building up their own independent nation so that they could be free and forge their own destiny. The needs of freedom and

self-determination are more important than the basic needs and they help humans to transcend the material and basics even though they may require sacrificing the satisfaction of these primary needs.

And Jesus is widening for us the horizon of our needs by remind-ing us that we are starvremind-ing for a happiness that will never end (eternal life). Therefore, he is challenging us to focus our at-tention and efforts on that desire that is also the root of any other human needs.

Therefore, Jesus is proposing Himself as the One who can fulfill that desire for everyone and forever… you will never be hungry anymore.

espués de la multiplicación de los panes y pescados, la gente busca a Jesús porque reconocieron que Él podía alimentarlos gratis… con un milagro. Pensaron que con Él su futuro estaba asegurado: no más dificultades por encontrar comida diaria. Tal vez otras necesidades también podrían ser atendidas muy fácilmente, con un milagro.

El pueblo de Israel (primera lectura, sufriendo hambre y sed en el desierto, lamenta haber seguido a Moisés en el sueño de en-contrar libertad y construir una nación para sí mismos. Ellos extrañan “la esclavitud”, porque entonces tenían suficiente co-mida, aunque no eran libres.

Cuando Jesús les dice a las multitudes que Él les dará “un pan del cielo” para que no vuelvan a sentir hambre, ellos piden in-mediatamente con expectativa, “danos ese pan”.

Las lecturas quieren ayudarnos a entender que, aunque tenemos necesidades básicas legítimas (comida, ropa, refugio, familia, amor, etc.) y necesitamos cuidarlas, hay otras necesidades que, como seres humanos, deberíamos tratar de atender. El pueblo de Israel se enfrenta al desafío de construir su nación indepen-diente para que pueda ser libre y forjar su propio destino. Las necesidades de libertad y autodeterminación son más importan-tes de las necesidades básicas y ayudan a los seres humanos a transcender lo material y básico, aunque puedan requerir sacri-ficar la satisfacción de estas necesidades primarias.

Y Jesús nos está engrandeciendo el horizonte de nuestras necesi-dades recordándonos que esta-mos hambrientos de una felici-dad que nunca terminará (vida eterna). Por lo tanto, nos está desafiando a enfocar nuestra atención y esfuerzos en ese de-seo que es también la raíz de cualquier otra necesidad huma-na.

Por lo tanto, Jesús se propone a sí mismo como Aquel que puede satisfacer ese deseo para todos y para siempre… nunca más ten-drán hambre.
