FEAST OF HOLY FAMILY ~ From the very first chapter of the Scriptures when it comes to family it is clear what God intends: “Be fruitful and multiply.” Today’s feast focuses on the holy family: Joseph, Mary and Jesus. From the beginning of Genesis we see God’s desire and plan for a re-generating of the species through a fruitful multiplication. God tells Abram (who becomes Abraham in the Covenant with God): “Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so shall your descendants be.” Even in Abraham’s old age God provides for the beginnings of a mighty nation with many descendants. Sterility is no obstacle for God. But there is more in the feast today as we listen to the Gospel of Luke. The Jews had a very deep faith understanding of the God-gift that family was. Both in thanksgiving and in the deepest sense of dedication, after 40 days the child was to be presented to God. In this particular family story, prophecy and grace and the beginning of redemption surround this ordinary family event. Devout Simeon declares: “My eyes have seen your salvation  a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory for your people Israel”. And he continues: “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted”.

Even Mary’s future pain and sorrow is predicted. Pause > ~~~ Is this what we can expect from family, whether a small family like Jesus’ or the enormous human family promised to Abraham by God? Is it always to include suffering? Will there always be struggle? Is there no doubt that both falling and rising is in the picture? And so> what makes it holy? ~~~ “The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him”. The favor of God falls upon all of us;

especially those anointed with God’s own Spirit in Baptism. There is no question about God’s promise of fruitfulness – just count the over 6 billion presently inhabiting the earth. Neither is there any question about the favor of God – available to any and all who open their heart to him. Perhaps the call of this feast day us to re-dedicate our self, our life, our day, our future to the God of Abraham, and our God too! Perhaps this is what makes each of us and any family ‘holy’!

La Sagrada Familia ~ Desde el primer capítulo de las Escrituras cuando se refiere a la familia está claro lo que Dios quiere que: "Sean fecundos y multiplíquense." La fiesta de hoy se centra en la Sagrada familia: José, María y Jesús. Desde el principio del Génesis vemos el deseo y el plan de Dios para una nueva generación de la especie a través de una multiplicación fructífera. Dios le dice a Abram (que se convierte en Abraham en el Pacto con Dios): "Mira el cielo y cuenta las estrellas, si puedes. Así será tu descendencia". Aún en la vejez de Abraham Dios provee para los comienzos de una nación poderosa con muchos descendientes. La esterilidad no es un obstáculo para Dios. Pero hay más en la fiesta de hoy mientras escuchamos el Evangelio de Lucas. Los Judíos tenían un profundo entendimiento de lo que significaba la familia como regalo de Dios. Tanto en acción de gracias como en el más profundo sentido de dedicación, después de 40 días el niño debía ser presentado a Dios. En esta historia particular de la familia, la profecía, la gracia, y el comienzo de la redención rodean este evento familiar ordinario. El devoto Simeón declara: "Mis ojos han visto a tu Salvador, luz que alumbra a las naciones y gloria de tu pueblo Israel". Y continúa: "Este niño ha sido puesto para ruina y resurgimiento de muchos en Israel, como signo de contradicción.” Incluso, se predice el futuro, el dolor y la tristeza de María. ¿Es esto lo que podemos esperar de la familia, ya sea una pequeña familia como la de Jesús o de la enorme familia humana prometida a Abraham por Dios? ¿Se trata de incluir siempre el sufrimiento? ¿Habrá siempre lucha?

¿Existe duda de que ambos, la ruina y el resurgimiento están presentes? Entonces, que es lo que lo hace santo. "El niño crecía y se fortalecía, lleno de sabiduría; y la gracia de Dios estaba sobre él". La gracia de Dios cae sobre todos nosotros; especialmente los ungidos con el propio Espíritu de Dios en el Bautismo. No hay duda acerca de la promesa de la fecundidad de Dios, sólo cuente los más de 6 billones que en la actualidad habitan la tierra. Tampoco hay duda sobre la gracia de Dios puestos a la disposición de cualquiera que le abra su corazón. Tal vez el llamado de este día de fiesta para nosotros es para volver a dedicar nuestro ser, nuestra vida, nuestro día, nuestro futuro al Dios de Abraham, y también Dios nuestro! Tal vez esto es lo que hace a cada uno de nosotros y a toda familia 'santa'!

Gracias ... por su generosidad y amor por su parroquia a lo largo de este año. Como han sido tan amables, generosos y amorosos de tantas y tantas formas, que el amor misericordioso, y la bondad de Dios les llenen, cubran, capaciten y les respalden, bendigan y enriquezcan sus vidas y sus familias, su trabajo y rol. "GENEROUS" - literalmente significa "de noble nacimiento". "Gener" es la raíz de muchas palabras: generar, generativo, generación, génesis, genética, generador, generosidad. Todos ellos sugieren producir, crear, multiplicar y causar ... Eso es lo que han hecho en la parroquia el pasado año. ¡Otro año!

¡Mas de lo mismo! Gracias ... y comenzamos de nuevo.

¡Terminemos nuestro 93º año como parroquia y comencemos nuestro 94º lleno de fe y de amor generoso!

ANNOINTING OF THE SICK This sacrament is a powerfully healing sacrament meant to be given to the sick during their illness. It is NOT necessary to wait for the last hours for it is no longer referred to or thought of as “last rites”. This

sacrament shares the sacramental gift of Jesus Christ for the purpose of strengthening, encouraging, and healing a person deep within their spirit. Even if one should die this sacrament usually prepares them and gifts them with healing peace.

Some suggestions to be shared with all your family members.

• Call a priest at the beginning of a serious illness or hospital stay

• Educate the family to understand that this sacrament is for healing

• Invite family members to participate in the celebration of this sacrament

• Do not wait for the last moments when a priest might not be available

• In the last moments, surround the dying with the presence, love and prayer of family
