Easter Sunday of the Resurrection

REFLECTING ON THE GOSPEL

John 20:1-9;

That first Easter

morning must have

been a

whirlwind of

confusion, perplexity,

and ultimately joy.

According to John

s

gospel, Mary of

Magdala was the first

to find the tomb empty.

Her reaction was not

belief in the

resurrection, but

something more

banal

-

that somebody

had stolen the body.

She immediately informs

Peter and another

disciple of her suspicion.

That other disciple is thought

to be the Beloved Disciple,

aka

the disciple whom

Jesus loved.

He is nameless

throughout the Gospel of

John, and there is not

mention of this person in any

other gospel. Yet he is

portrayed as the model of

discipleship, as we see that

he saw and believed,

something not even Peter did

upon witnessing the empty

tomb. Interestingly, the

gospel passage ends on the

note that these disciples did

not yet understand the

Scripture that he had to rise

from the dead. After all this

time with Jesus, and even

finding the tomb empty, they

still did not understand. Yet,

the Beloved Disciple, at least,

believed. Such a story gives

hope to us who did not travel

with Jesus or experience his

historical ministry. If we have

questions or experience a lack

of understanding, we may be

assured that the earliest

disciples, the followers of

Jesus himself, felt the same

way even after the

resurrection. Living Liturgy

EASTER MESSAGE FROM FR. ARTURO

Dear St Patrick Parishioners and Friends,

Easter blessings to all of you! The Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ is the foundation of our faith and it is the reason to be strong during this difficult time we are apart. All of us here at St. Patrick Parish we miss you, and we pray that you, your families and loved ones, have a blessed Easter. With sincere gratitude, I also thank you for your prayers and financial support during this time we are facing together. It is really a blessing for me to receive some cards, phone calls and emails from all of you. Some of you have also left goodies and food in front of my door and it is then I realize that even though we are physically separated we are one community united by generosity, gratitude, and prayer.

Easter brings so many promises of God to all of us, life in Christ is stronger than death, love can over-come hatred, and eternal life in Heaven is our final destination. I pray and offer the holy Eucharist every day that you remain strong and have the patience to overcome anxiety and fear. May the Risen Lord remain in all your hearts, that you may always embrace Him with love and gratitude. May God bless each and every one of you and your loved ones.

Fr. Arturo Romero Pastor

MENSAJE DE PASCUA DEL

P. ARTURO

A MESSAGE AND UPDATE FROM ARCHBISHOP SAMPLE

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Praised be Jesus Christ!

On March 16, 2020, I issued a decree suspending the celebration of public Masses throughout the Archdiocese until April 14, 2020. I did so with a very heavy heart, hoping that this state of affairs would only last a few weeks. It has become clear, however, that the impact of the COVID-19 virus is very far-reaching and will be with us for some time. On March 23, 2020, Oregon's

Governor Brown issued an order mandating that state residents remain at home until further notice except for essential work and trips to obtain necessary supplies. On March 31, 2020, the President issued similar guidance for the entire month of April to slow the spread of the pandemic.

In order to be in accord with government directives and protect the people of the Archdiocese, I am therefore extending the suspension of all public Masses in the

Archdiocese of Portland until further notice. I am likewise dispensing all of the faithful from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation until further notice. Priests will still be offering Sunday and daily Masses privately and I remind you of the many opportunities now available to participate in livestreamed liturgies at your parishes and at the Cathedral, especially during Holy Week. I will reinstate the public celebration of the Holy Mass at the soonest date possible, following the recommendations of public health and other civil officials.

We must continue to remember that the Holy Eucharist remains the source and summit of the Christian life and pray that this time of fast-ing from it will brfast-ing forth abundant fruit for the Church. May we look forward with great-er eaggreat-erness to the joy of the resurrection and as always, remember those most afflicted by the present situation. In the mystery of Christ's passion, death and resurrection,

Most Reverend Alexander K. Sample Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon

UN MENSAJE Y ACTUALIZACIÓN DE MUES-TRA DE ARZOBISPO

Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

¡Alabado sea Jesucristo!
