You are welcome Here
We are a new parish, established in August of 2017, comprised of St. James and Immaculate Conception churches. We work together to invite all people to a deeper relationship with Jesus through our liturgies and opportunities to learn and to serve one another.
Last week we celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation with 11 of our young parishioners. Bishop Mark O’Connell was here and led us through a beautiful ceremony. It was a great opportunity to celebrate this moment in the lives of our young people. This week we will celebrate First Communion with our English-speaking students, and then next week we will have the Spanish-speaking community’s First Communion. It is an exciting time and an opportunity to assess how we are continuing to grow and develop as a parish. The Easter season is a beautiful time to reflect on the enormity of God’s love for us and the way the Holy Spirit continues to help us and draw others to God through us.
This week we also had a finance council meeting and by the time you are reading this, should be able to report that we are on target to have a good balanced budget for the coming fiscal year. This is in large part due to your ongoing generosity and support, the insights of our finance council members, and the careful and watchful eye of Andrea Sevigny, our business manager. We are fortunate to have dedicated parishioners who help with this area of the parish and a good business manager who knows sound fiscal management for parishes.
This past week I went to the State House with some of our young Hispanic families, parishioners of other parishes, leaders of other congregations, and some local organizers of ECCO (Essex County Community Organization). We were at the State House to deliver hundreds of letters that children of immigrants have written to ask that laws be enacted to help their parents onto a path to citizenship and to stop the splitting of families through the deportation of people who have been established here for a long time, are not criminals, and live among us with the same hopes and dreams that American-born parents have for their children. In many ways, their stories echo the stories of generations of European immigrants who also came here in search of a better life for their themselves and their children. It was poignant to see some of the signs the children were holding asking the governor and our legislators to help preserve families. I was proud of the number of families from this parish who were present. This is also an important part of our faith, walking with those who are marginalized or mistreated and calling for justice for them.
…For I was a stranger and you welcomed me… (MT 25:35)
Peace,
Father Murray
Building news: The Marathon Monday storm brought some strong winds and damage to the roof at the Immaculate Conception Church. Some of the copper flashing along the front of the church roof line to the peak of the roof was blown off by the strong winds. James Shea Roofing came the next day, and we were fortunate that they could recover some pieces and reuse them, but they also replaced a number of the coverings. We also had some water leaks that reveal that the back wall mortar joints are failing (sigh), so we need to do some repointing back there. At St. James we are preparing to have the valve zones replaced which should al-low us to control the heat better next year as well as control costs.

EASTER FLOWERS
THANK YOU
Thank you to all who were

sanctuaries so beautiful for
Holy Week and Easter! Each

with flowers all week, due to
the generosity of many donors and the hard work of many volunteers. We are so grateful to all.
SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul of Salem will be holding our monthly collection next weekend on May 12 and 13, and will be at the church doors after all of the Masses. During the past month, we collected $11,033 from our collection boxes and many very generous benefactors. Special thanks to Ste. Anne's parishioners for $1,560 which was collected for our ministry at the Holy Thursday service, in addition to the regular monthly collection. Your donations fund our assistance for our clients in need in Salem.
During the past month, our volunteers used your donations to provide $11,107 in assistance to 20 clients and their families. Because of your generosity, we have been able to prevent several evictions that would have resulted in homelessness for those families ― $3,336 was paid toward back rent last month. We also helped clients pay past due electricity and fuel bills ($2,615) to
avoid shutoff of those utilities, with exceptionally high bills due to the long, cold winter. In addition, we helped clients in need of food ($3,042), provided a meal at Lifebridge ($225), and provided furniture and other miscellaneous items. We also provided a basket of baby items and a crib to a needy couple who are expecting their first child very soon. We gratefully acknowledge your generous contributions, which help the needy of Salem, and pray for you at each of our meetings.
