Jesus knew that his mission was not to be continued by mere humans; on our own authority and power we could not give true witness and our doubts and misunder-standings could never be overcome. Jesus knew that his mission could be entrusted to his disciples because they “will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon” them. It is the Spirit who resolves doubt, clears up misunderstanding about the mis-sion, gives wisdom, revelation, and knowledge. Thus, being disciples of Jesus is not something we are alone. We are disciples by letting the Spirit work through us as we live our everyday life. (Living Liturgy, p.142)
Respect Life Judy Hyatt
There was a curious cus-tom years ago that per-haps developed in an age when Easter was seen less as a b a p t i s m a l season than as a kind of tour through the deeds of the Risen Christ. The paschal can-dle, sign of Christ’s pres-ence, was
re-moved from public view on Ascension Thursday, banished to the baptis-tery.
Ascension day does speak of the hidden as-pects of Christ’s life among us, but it does not have much to do with God’s absence. Christ has not shed his human life like an incon-venient shell, but rather has taken humanity into heaven.
The theologian Karl Rah-ner said that it is a festival of “the nearness of God.” In vanishing from our
sight, Christ has become ut-terly avail-able to all at every time and every place, and is “closer to us than he ever was.” T o -day is the feast of believing that be-yond our final breath is a presence that waits for us, a banquet prepared, a ten-der homecoming embrace. Rahner said that today is a festival of the future of the world, a day for anticipat-ing the world’s true des-tiny, and therefore hardly a day to be going around hiding candles!

Treasures from our Tradition
“I would like to say, humbly, to those who suffer and to thosewho struggle and are tempted to turn their backs on life: turn towards Mary! Within the smile of the Virgin lies
mysteriously hidden the strength to fight against sickness, in support of life. With her, equally, is found the grace to accept without fear or bitterness to leave this world at the hour chosen by God”. — Pope Benedict XVI, Homily in front of the Basilica of Notre-Dame du Rosaire, Lourdes, Monday, 15 September 2008

A MISSION FROM THE MOUNTAIN
Matthew is the only one of the evangelists who does not speak explicitly of or recount the departure of Jesus from his followers. Mark and Luke recount the Ascension, each in his own way; and John consistently has Jesus speak of the necessity of his departure so the Paraclete might come. Matthew situates his final scene for Jesus on top of a mountain in Galilee (not outside Jerusalem, as Luke does). This is the region where his mission originated, and throughout his Gospel the mountaintop has been the place for him to teach his followers. (We are familiar with the “Sermon on the Mount” from Matthew.) And here Jesus re‐echoes those Ascension themes we hear from the other evangelists: It is Jesus himself, risen and glorified, charged with power from the Father, who sends us out; it is Jesus himself who gives us our mission to baptize, heal, teach, and proclaim the Good News of salvation; it is Jesus him-self who will be with us always, as we continue to be his presence alive in the world.
The Knights of Columbus are hosting The Great 2014 Draw Down on Saturday, June 14 at the Guntersville Town Hall. The event will be from 7:00—11:00 pm. Hors d’ouerves will be served and music to be provided by DJ, Dr. Gerry Skaziak. The first ticket will be drawn around 8:00 pm. Séptimo Domingo de Pascua
El mensaje de Nuestra
Señora del Rosario de
Chiquinquirá o la Chinita
como cariñosamente la
llaman sus fieles, es
sen-cillo: “Déjate renovar por
Dios”. Renovación que
ella misma recibió
mila-grosamente en el año
1586. En ese entonces, su
imagen pertenecía a doña
María, una mujer
sevilla-na de mucha piedad.
Doña María había
re-cibido como herencia por
parte de su hermano
An-tonio una pintura de la
Virgen del Rosario en tan
mal estado que no se
pod-ía distinguir ni la Virgen
madre con el niño Dios en
sus brazos o los santos
Antonio de Padova y
Andrés apóstol.
No obstante la mala
con-dición de la pintura, doña
María la colocó en su
ca-pilla donde pasaba las
mañanas en oración.
Un día, una indígena
y su niño pasaban por la
puerta de la capilla
cuan-do notaron un gran brillo
que venia del rostro de
María iluminando el resto
del cuadro con colores
vivos y brillantes.
Inme-diatamente llamaron a
doña María, quien pudo
ser testigo de la milagrosa
renovación. Como algo
muy interesante, la
ima-gen de cerca se ve borrosa
y dañada, pero de lejos
adquiere distinción y
niti-dez.
