of theVI CongresoLatinoamericanode BotánicainArgentinainOctober, 1994,thesenior author had the opportunity to takepartin a field trip to northwestern Argentina led by the junior author.Asa resultof collections madeduring
that •excursion, it was realized that the followingnew combinationsarenecessary.
Plants relatively small in dense dark-green to blackish,
golden
with age, dense mats. Stems creeping to ca. 2 cm long,irregularly
but freely branched, the branches terete, ca. 2-3 mmlong,
curved whendry;in cross-section with 2-3 rows of smallfirm-walled cellssurrounding larger thinner-walled cells, central strand well
developed;
paraphyllia none; pseudoparaphyllia broadly folióse; axillary hairs with a single short brown basal cellca.5-6pmtall anda
single relatively
short hyaline apicalcell, ca. 14-32x8-9pm. Branchand stemleaves notorscarcely
differentiated,appressed when dry, wide-spreading when moist, ovate toovate-triangular,
0.5-0.9 mm long., gradually shortly broad-acuminate toslenderly
long-acuminate, the acumen often curved, short-decurrent;margins

Seemingly rare and restricted tonorthwestern Argentina (Tucumán); growing on moistsoil atmoderate elevations.
Cyclodictyon
lorentzii seems not, untilrecently,
tohave been collectedsincethe
original gathering
by Lorentz in 1872. The basionym, Hookeria lorentzii, has languished since itsoriginal
descrip¬
tionasan unknown taxon (Brotherus, 1907, 1925; Kühnemann,1938). However, theoriginaldescrip¬ tion by Müller (1882) leaves no doubt as to the genericdisposition of the species, as evidenced by «margine
...
ubique limbo» and «nervis binis ... ante apicem...
evanidis percursa». Unfortunately thetype
has not been found andmay
well nolonger
