A REFLECTION ON

LENTEN FASTING

In the early Church and, to a lesser extent still today, there were two fasts. There was the "total fast" that preceded all major feasts or sacramental events. The total fast is still kept today prior to reception of Holy Communion. A person who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before Holy Communion from any food and drink, except for only water and medicine.

The second fast was a fast of abstinence from certain foods, e.g., meats or fats. This was more an act of self- discipline and self-control.

Following Holy Communion, the total fast ceases because Jesus had explicitly stated that we don't fast when the bridegroom is here. In other words, what we're keeping vigil for has arrived, the wait is over.

On the other hand, the fast of abstinence was allowed on Sundays because the continuity of abstinence can be important for it to be effective.

Christian tradition can name at least seven reasons for fasting:

1. From the beginning, God commanded some fasting, and sin entered into the world because Adam and Eve broke the fast.

2. For the Christian, fasting is ultimately about fasting from sin.

3. Fasting reveals our dependence on God and not the resources of this world.

4. Fasting is an ancient way of preparing for the Eucharist—the truest of foods.

5. Fasting is preparation for baptism (and all the sacraments)—for the reception of grace.

6. Fasting is a means of saving resources to give to the poor.

7. Fasting is a means of self-discipline, chastity, and the restraining of the appetites.

"Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have; God is pleased by sacrifi ces of that kind."

(Hebrews 13:16)

PARISH NEWS

We are deep into our Lenten Journey now. Like explorers on an expedition we've reached a point where there is no turning back.... so you keep pushing forward. As St. Junipero Serra was known to say,

"Always forward, never back."

In last week's Gospel we heard the story of The Prodigal Son, regretting his sins, asked forgiveness of his father. His father welcomed him back with open arms... even ran towards him when he caught sight of his son far in the distance. He couldn't WAIT to welcome his wayward son home with a big feast, new clothes and a place of honor in his home. Did you know that many of the saints were sinners too?

St. Francis of Assisi said, "I have been all things unholy. If God can work through me, He can work through anyone." can you imagine a saint, one of our greatest saints - Saint Francis of Assisi saying that? Like The Prodigal Son, young St. Francis of Assisi had lead a life of dissipation and partying before undergoing a deep transformation and changing his ways to a life of holiness.

It was not his earthly father who welcomed him home. No, his earthly father rejected him. But God, his Heavenly Father welcomed him with open arms giving him a new life and spiritual riches beyond compare.

May our Lenten bring us a renewed spirit of forgiveness and generosity of heart. May our transformation spill over and bless the lives of those around us!

Please consider the CFA as part of your Lenten giving. Thank you and may God bless you!

In Christ, Catherine

Catholic politicians and voters have allowed abortion-on- demand to become the law of the land. Will we make the same mistake with euthanasia? Currently, one in every six Americans lives in a state that allows physician-assisted suicide. Are we already on the slippery slope? Are you ready for the problems the Dutch are experiencing?

Th e Dutch parliament approved euthanasia in 2002. In 2007, almost 2,000 people died by the hand of their doctor. In ten

years that number jumped to 6,600. Another 32,000 Dutch died of dehydration while under palliative sedation. With 1,900 dying at their own hand, one quarter of all deaths were by suicide.

Aside from the immorality, what problems can we expect?

Th e Dutch approved 6,600 people for euthanasia in 2017, but a similar number of Dutch people had their request denied. I don't know what your politics are, but do you want your life and death decisions in the hands of today’s politicians?

Now the Dutch are struggling with their fi rst case of euthanasia malpractice. Years earlier, the patient wrote a Dementia Directive outlining a desire for ending her life under specifi c conditions.

When the conditions were met she changed her mind. Her

“grieving” family held her down while the euthanasia doctor did his work. Now he is paying the price. Get ready America.

PARISH NEWS

Even in the smallest of Churches, it’s sometimes diffi cult to remember everybody’s name. Our Church is a lot bigger and we have a lot more neighbors to meet and greet. Let’s get to know them by name and not be embarrassed when we realize we have called someone by the wrong name. How? A Name Badge is the solution.

Complete the slip, bring it by the Church offi ce Monday thru Friday (closed from 12:30 PM until 1:30 PM) to order your name badge today, and give your fellow parishioners a proper welcome next time you see them.

Please print clearly!
