March 3-4
Third Sunday of Lent
The second reading for this Sunday reminds us that the power of Jesus, our Crucified Lord is greater than what every culture of that time or any time has to offer. God’s power and wisdom go beyond what we can even imagine. As we listen to the “wisdom” and “power” of the political voices that rule the news airwaves, Paul’s letter to the
Corinthians can help us to remember to pay attention to “God’s folly and God’s weakness”.
We have much to learn from Christ who looked so foolish and weak and yet all true power was his and is his. How can we confront the false powers of today with God’s folly and weak- ness which is true power?
Marzo 3-4

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR/CARTA DE NUESTRO PARROCO
Dear parishioners,
During the season of Lent, we focus our attention on renewing the spirit of conversion. For this reason, it is appropriate to receive the Sacrament of Penance. By making a good Confession and particularly by the motives of sorrow for our sins and a sincere ex- amination of conscience, we are spiritually reborn and the graces that we received at the Sacrament of Baptism are restored in us.
Along with the Sacrament of Penance, the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick are sacraments of healing because the effect of both is the forgiveness of sins and the promotion of healing.
Lent is also an appropriate time to renew our understanding of the Anointing of the Sick.
To receive the Anointing, please approach the priest after Holy Mass or call the church office to arrange to receive the Anoint- ing. If you know ahead of time that you will undergo a medical procedure, there will be time to visit the priest in the church or the office.
Each of the Sacraments is explained in a special instruction that is printed at the beginning of the liturgical book. For our reflection, I include a few quotations below.
“The Letter of James states that the sick are to be anointed in order to raise them up and save them. Great care and concern should be taken to see that those of the faithful whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age receive this sacrament.
A prudent or reasonably sure judgment, without scruple, is suf- ficient for deciding on the seriousness of an illness…” (Par. 8)
“The Sacrament of Anointing is to be conferred on sick people who, although they have lost consciousness or the use of reason, have, as Christian believers, at least implicitly asked for it when they were in control of their faculties.” (Par. 14)
“When a priest has been called to attend those who are already dead, he should not administer the Sacrament of Anointing. In- stead, he should pray for them, asking that God forgive their sins and graciously receive them into his kingdom.” (Par. 15)
It is important to note that sickness can occur as physical, mental or emotional.
The priests often attend the sick in the hospitals and health care facilities. At times it may be difficult to establish a spirit of prayer in a hospital because of the application of nursing care to the sick person. For this reason, it is preferred that if possible the person who is sick contacts the priest before entering the hospital.
Let us pray always for those who are sick, that Our Lord will grant them forgiveness and healing.
All-powerful and ever-living God, the lasting health of all who believe in you, hear us as we ask for your loving help for the sick; restore their health, that they may again offer joyful thanks in your Church. Amen.
Your Pastor, Father David.
Queridos Feligreses,

Though prayer is one of the essentials of a thriving faith, we often feel as if we’re talking to ourselves—or, worse, as if we’re talking to no one at all. How can something so vital to the Faith be so elusive?
