The names men oned in the gospel belong in the passion of Christ. It reminds us that Christ is going to be born in the world to die on the cross. These were the powerful leaders of the me. But the Word of God did not come to them. Instead the Word of God came to John, son of Zechariah, a person who the world considered a nobody, who lived in the desert. When I think of John the Bap st I can’t help think of a play called God Spell. The opening scene begins like this:
Imagine a theater stage. At the back are 9 actors. Each comes forward and starts singing their ideologies on life from Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Aquinas, socialism, communism, and capital-ism. Pre y soon they are all singing at the same me in a state of confusion. We realize that throughout history each ideology had its moment at center stage. But the truth is, we find ourselves in a state of confusion and not a single one of them really bring us peace and joy.
Then from the back we hear the sound of a ram horn. There is silence. Complete silence. Then John the Bap st comes in with a pail of water splashing everyone and singing “Prepare ye the way of the Lord, prepare ye the way of the Lord.” He is leading us out of our state of confusion. He is calling us to go into the desert to be purified and cleaned—to wash our hearts, to wash our minds, and to wash our souls, so the Messiah can come live inside us. You may ask: where is my desert? The desert is where God lives. It is the state of our heart, our mind, and our soul when we are completely ab-sorbed in the powerful presence of God. In the desert we find ourselves completely alone with the issues of life, death, purpose, and eternity. It is when we are praying and it is when we are trying to listen to the s ll small voice of God in our hearts. It is when we go to confession, when we ask for God’s mercy and we receive God’s mercy, so we can share God’s mercy and forgive others. It is where we are alone with God. And when we are alone with God we can hear God’s voice in our heart telling us: “Be washed. Be cleansed of anger, hatred and the need for re-venge. Stop hur ng yourself and others. Your sins are forgiven; go and sin no more. Love one another as I have loved you. You shall love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength...and your neighbor as yourself.”
This is the Word of God. And the Word of God has come to us, just like John the Bap st. We are being called to cleanse ourselves in the desert in order to prepare for our new mission. Our new mission will be to be a prophet preparing the way for the Messiah by crying out in everything we say and do “prepare ye the way of the Lord, Prepare ye the way of the Lord.” And the way of the Lord is love,
forgiveness, and the resurrec on.
