Los Santos Cirilo y Metodio
(14 de febrero)
Los Santos Cirilo y Metodio fueron proclamados co- patronos de Europa, junto con san Benito, por el Papa Juan Pablo II, el 31 de diciembre de 1980.
Cirilo cuyo nombre de bautismo era Constantino y su hermano mayor Metodio cuyo nombre de bautis- mo era Miguel, nacieron en Tesalónica en Grecia.
Debido a que su padre era un oficial militar en esa parte de Grecia habitada por muchos eslavos, estos dos hermanos finalmente se convirtieron en misioneros, maestros y patronos de los pueblos eslavos.
Cirilo fue ordenado sacerdote en Constantinopla y enseñó filosofía allí. Metodio, después de ser gober- nador de una provincia eslava, se hizo monje. Se convirtieron en apóstoles de las naciones eslavas de Moravia, Bohemia y Bulgaria. Su fiesta se celebra universalmente en la Iglesia desde 1880. Original- mente fueron enviados por el emperador bizantino y el patriarca de Constantinopla para predicar el evangelio a los eslavos.

Saints Cyril and Methodius
(February 14)
Saints Cyril and Methodius were proclaimed co- patrons of Europe, together with St Benedict, by Pope John Paul II, on Dec 31, 1980.
Cyril whose baptismal name was Constantine and his older brother Methodius whose baptismal name was Michael, were born at Thessalonica in Greece.
Because their father was a military officer in that part of Greece inhabited by many Slavs, these two brothers ultimately became missionaries, teachers and patrons of the Slavic peoples.
Cyril was ordained a priest at Constantinople and taught philosophy there. Methodius, after being governor of a Slav province and became a monk.
They became apostles to the Slav nations of Mora- via, Bohemia and Bulgaria. Their feast has been celebrated universally in the Church, since 1880.
They were originally sent by the Byzantine emperor and the Patriarch of Constantinople to preach the gospel to the Slavs.
Cyril’s first work was to invent an alphabet, still used in some Eastern liturgies. His followers proba- bly formed the Cyrillic alphabet from Greek capital letters. Modern Russian in fact uses a variation of the Cyrillic alphabet.
Together they translated the Gospels, the psalter, the letters of St Paul and the liturgical books into Slavonic and composed a Slavonic liturgy. This was highly irregular at that time since everything was in Latin at this time. To this day, the alphabet of Slavic languages is called ‘Cyrillic’, after St Cyril.
That and their free use of the vernacular in preach- ing led to opposition from the German clergy. Cyril and Methodius were suspected of heresy. But they successfully defended their teaching and their methods at Rome.
On the visit to Rome, he and Methodius had the joy of seeing their new liturgy approved by Pope Adrian II. Shortly after, Cyril, died in Rome on February 14th 869 - 1153 years ago.
Methodius continued his missionary work for sixteen more years. He was papal legate for all the Slavic peoples. He was consecrated a bishop and then giv- en an ancient see, now in the Czech Republic. He died on April 6, in the year 885.
All the cultures of the Slavic nations owe their be- ginnings and development to Sts Cyril and Methodi- us, whether it was the creation of their alphabet or the translation of the liturgical books into the lan- guage of the people.
The Slavonic language is used even today in the liturgy of the Eastern Church, both Catholic and Or- thodox. It is also used in the Roman liturgy of Croa- tia. As Pope John Paul II points out in his apostolic letter Slavorum Apostoli, the work of these two co- patrons of Europe was an outstanding contribution to the common Christian foundation of Europe.

The Sacrament of Baptism - Please call the parish office
for an appointment to schedule baptism for your child.
Both parents should come for the appointment. They must be registered members of the parish and if this is not your parish you must bring a letter from your pastor giving permission for the child to be baptized here at St Joseph’s. Please bring a copy of the birth certificate of the child. You would also be required to submit sponsorship letters for the godparents - who must have received their sacraments, and if married, they should have been ma- rried in the Catholic Church. A date for baptismal Instruc- tion (usually two weeks before, at 7:00 PM) will be given.
Parish Registration— All adults (18 years and older) should be registered in the parish . It is not enough to be baptized here years ago but not being registered or partic- ipating in the life of the parish . That is not what being a Catholic means. Please register, come to church and use the offering envelopes , no matter what your contribution is. Participate in the life of our parish by being a practicing CATHOLIC.
