I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth." God added:"This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come, of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you: I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings, so that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal beings."

Second Reading
1 PETER 3:18-22Beloved: Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the Spirit. In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water. This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.

THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS REWORKED
This started out as a reflection about the Stations and then evolved, and evolved yet again. What would it be like if the events that happened in the 1st century happened in the 21st century?
Who would our Jesus be? This Jesus may not be seen as divine, he could be a homeless man, a child being bullied at school, an immigrant, a woman forced into retirement, or a victim of domestic abuse? Using the 14 stations as a basis, change the story. Change the events, keep the meaning. Who was Simon, what was he thinking at the when he was carrying Jesus’ cross? Did Veronica use her mittens, or a paper towel from Super America? The point is this is an ancient tradition that resonates today as it did then.
The intention of this short little meet and greet is to admire and be astonished with all of the simple and incredible stories we have to offer. (We usually are out by 7:30 to 8 pm)

It’s that time of year again. The March Campaign is up and running from February 24th until April 8th. We will be collect- ing “Dollars and Pounds”. Last year, with your help, we col- lected$9,149 dollars and 12,056 pounds = 21,205 combined dollars & pounds. Let’s try for 23,000 this year! We will be setting out collection bins on Sunday mornings so you can drop your non-perishable food donations there when you come to church. Your donations of Dollars you can leave in the collec- tion baskets just designate: “For the Food Shelf”.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT: A friend was telling me about how her current marriage is different from previous relationships that broke up after bouts of excessive drama. She realized that, until she could be alone in peace, she could not love another hu- man being well. In Mark’s simple telling of Jesus’
time in the desert, we are given few details. Mark’s emphasis is not on the content of Jesus’ tempta- tions, but rather on Jesus’ silent dependence on his Father’s care. Jesus is alone – but never alone. Alt- hough surrounded by wild animals, he is sustained by his Abba’s messengers. A suggestion for this Lent: take a little silent time daily in prayer. Recite words, yes, and enjoy some sacred music if that is your style. But then be quiet with your God. You will be alone, but never alone.
LENTEN DISCIPLINES: FASTING: Catholics follow these Lenten practices about our consumption of food:
Everyone 14 years of age or older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Everyone 18 or older, and under 59 years of age, is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. Of course, no one is asked to follow these practices when health or ability to work would be seriously affected. And by the way, old peo- ple like me are certainly invited to fast and abstain too!
LENT AND THE CSA: Another of Lent’s disciplines is almsgiving. Our tradition asks you to find a way to direct some of your money and/or your time to the

Si dio cuenta que, me dijo, que nunca podría amar bien a otra persona antes de poder encontrar una serenidad a solas. En la ver- sión sencilla de Jesús en el desierto que Marcos nos cuenta, recibimos pocos detalles. Su énfasis no se encuentra en el contenido de las tentaciones, más bien en la dependencia silenciosa de Jesús en su Padre. Jesús está solo – pero nunca a solas. Aun- que circundado por animales selváticos, se sustenta por los mensajeros de su Abba. Una sugerencia cuaresmal: diariamente reza un ratito en silencio.
Recite palabras, sí, y escucha alguna música sagra- da. Pues cállate. Estarás solo, pero nunca a solas.
DISCIPLINAS CUARESMALES: EL AYUNO:
Los católicos seguimos estas prácticas cuares- males en cuanto a la comida: todos con al me- nos 14 años cumplidos deben de abstener de comer carne en los viernes cuaresmales, el Miércoles de Cenizas, y Viernes Santo. En esos dos últimos días, los que han cumplido entre 18 y 59 años ayunan – que significa que se co- me solo una comida “normal” y dos colaciones que juntas no llegan a una comida normal. No se come entre las tres comidas. Por supuesto, nadie debe de seguir estas prácticas al costo de su salud o su capacidad trabajadora. Y añado:
los viejos como yo ciertamente somos invitados a ayunar y abstener.

Appeal is one fine way to do so. Like the food disci- plines in the previous paragraph, the CSA is a shared effort of the members of our communion. We pray together; we fast together; we give together.
CONFIRMATION: Next Saturday Owen Cody will be confirmed at the Basilica of Saint Mary at 10:00 AM.
He is a solid, fun, thoughtful young man. During our year of Confirmation preparation, Owen raised chal- lenging questions of faith – and now is prepared to say an adult yes to that faith. He joins his parents, Deb and Dwight, and his sister Isabell as fully incor- porated members of faith tradition. Welcome aboard, Owen.
PRESIDENTS’ DAY: One of the marvelous char- acters in the play “Hamilton” is George Washing- ton. The playwright Lin Manuel Miranda captured both Washington’s strength and his wise restraint.
As we observe Presidents’ Day this weekend, we are particularly focused on Washington and Lin- coln. But we can approach the Presidency’s 230th anniversary in Spring 2019 with gratitude for the balance of powers that has kept our nation’s de- mocracy strong. May it continue to be so – God bless America!
THE INCARNATION 2020 PLAN: In order to make a solid plan for what we hope to do with our parish properties, we needed to find out about what did not have to do. I have had two very large questions since coming to Incarnation in 2008.
First, is the underlying structure of the church – its foundations and wall – strong enough to support at renovated roof for another century? Our beautiful church’s architect, Emanuel Masqueray, was a bril- liant designer of space but a rather poor engineer.
Others of his churches have had to be substantially rebuilt: would Incarnation face similar challenges?
Happily, the answer is no. Second, is there any reasonable way to provide more entry/gathering space at the front of the church? That answer is also no. Clarifying those two issues lets us shift our focus to future possibilities. Please plan to at- tend on March 3 and 4 to learn more.
MY BROTHER GIVES A SPEECH: My brother Denis has now been out of office (as White House Chief of Staff) for a year. One of his current occupations is public speaking. He will be in Saint Paul this Thurs- day, addressing an annual meeting of community leaders. I am looking forward to hearing him.

CONFIRMACION: El sábado que viene Owen Cody será confirmado en la Basílica de Santa María a las 10:00 AM. Es un joven simpático, pensativo, y soli- do. Durante el año de preparación, nos echó pre- guntas importantes de fe – y ahora está listo por decir su sí adulto a esa fe. Con sus padres Deb y Dwight y su hermana Isabel, se hace un miembro plenamente incorporado en nuestra tradición de fe.

A celebrar este fin de semana el Día de los Presi- dentes, nos enfocamos en particular en Washington y Lincoln. Pero al acercarse de 230º aniversario de la Presidencia en marzo 2019, podemos ser agrade- cidos por el equilibrio de poderes que ha mantenido la fuerza de nuestra democracia. Que siga siendo así – Dios bendiga a los EEUU.
EL PLAN INCARNATION 2020: Para poder crear un plan solido por lo que esperamos hacer con nuestras propiedades, importaba saber qué no tendríamos que hacer. Desde llegar aquí hace diez años, me preocupaban dos preguntas. Pri- mero, ¿tiene la estructura subyacente (cimientas y muros) – la fuerza para apoyar un nuevo techo por otro siglo? El arquitecto de nuestro templo magnifico fue diseñador maravilloso de espacios pero ingeniero malo. Otros de sus templos mo- numentales tuvieron que ser reconstruidos subs- tancialmente: ¿enfrentaríamos lo mismo? Feliz- mente la respuesta es no. Segundo, ¿existe una solución para proveer más espacio entrada/
acogimiento al frente de templo? Esa respuesta también es no. Clarificar esas dos dudas nos ha permitido enfocarnos en el futuro. Favor de asis- tir el 3 o 4 marzo para aprender mas.
MI HERMANO DA UN DISCURSO: Mi hermano Denis cumple un año de salir de su oficina como Je- fe de Gabinete por el Presidente Obama. Una de sus ocupaciones actuales es la oratoria. Estará en Saint Paul este jueves, hablando al mitin anual de un grupo de líderes. Sera un honor poder escuchar- lo. Miren las noticias en la TV: tendrá unas cosas útiles y pensativos que decir.
