1.2 Presentation
A continuación, estudiarás conceptos de la estructura gramatical en el uso de should and ought to.
Should Affirmative form
(subject + SHOULD + verb + complement)
Should comes first in the verb phrase (after the subject and before another verb):
• You should go home now. Get some rest and take your medicine on time.
• We should ask the teacher before submitting the homework.
Should cannot be used with another modal verb:
Not: It should must be sunny… or It should outght to be sunny…
Negative form
(subject + SHOULD NOT + verb + complement)
The negative form of should is shouldn’t. We don’t use don’t, doesn’t, didn’t with should:
• Children shouldn’t talk to strangers.
We use the full form should not in formal contexts or when we want to emphasize something:
• We should not forget our teacher’s birthday.
Question form
(SHOULD + subject + verb + complement + ?) The subject and should change position to form questions.
I feel sick. Should I go to the clinic?
Yes, you should. / No, you shouldn’t.
There is an English test tomorrow. Should I study the whole textbook?
Yes, you should. / No, you shouldn’t.
Ought to Affirmative form
(subject + OUGHT TO + verb + complement)
Ought to comes first in the verb phrase (after the subject and before another verb):
We ought to do more exercise.
Both Education and Medicine ought to be free.
Ought to cannot be used with another modal verb:
Not: Medicine ought to can be free… or Medicine can ought to be free.
Negative form
Even though, the negative form of ought to is used in some cases, it’s not very common.
We usually use shouldn’t or should not instead:
You shouldn’t speak to your father like that. (You oughtn’t to speak …)
