Dear Parishioners:
So close and yet so far! Each day I look out from my lofty perch at the hospital to a magnificent view. It includes the sky-line of Manhattan as well as our own St. Francis Church here in Hackensack.
On Friday the 19th of October we woke to an overcast day. So much so that NYC was completely enveloped in clouds. It was as if some great magician like David Copperfield made the Big Apple disappear. But still our Church was as clear as a bell.
As I prayed my morning prayers I could not help but think that only God could make a great city invisible and only He can restore sight to the blind like in to-day’s Gospel account from St. Mark. Barti-maeus, the blind man, ironically can see that Jesus is the “Son of David”, code words for the Messiah, while Jesus’ disciples don’t seem to recognize him for who he really is. In fact he is so convinced by the “sight” of faith that Jesus can heal him that “he threw aside his cloak, sprang up and came to Je-sus.
The cloak in ancient times was the poor man’s home, shelter from the elements and his single garment of value. Now the Lord was to become Bartimaeus’ shelter, security, and true home. After the miracle takes place he doesn’t return for his “possession” but rather enthusiastically fol-lows Jesus down the road as his new disci-ple. Before, he had depended on the charity of others because he couldn’t work. Now he was not only willing to work for a living but also depend on God’s providence to sustain him in his faith. Not a bad trade for the gift of sight; don’t you think? May we, with the gift of sight, use our afflictions to grow in faith like Bartimaeus.

Estimados Feligreses:
¡Tan cerca y tan lejos! Cada día miro desde mi alta percha en el hospital a una vista magnífica. Incluye el horizonte de Manhattan y nuestra propia Iglesia de San Francisco aquí en Hackensack.
El viernes 19 de octubre nos desperta-mos a un día nublado. Tanto así que Nueva York estaba completamente envuelta en nubes. Era como si un gran mago como David Copperfield hiciera desaparecer la Gran Manzana. Pero aún así nuestra iglesia era tan clara como una cam-pana.
Mientras oraba mis oraciones de la ma-drugada, no pude evitar pensar que solo Dios podía hacer invisible una gran ciudad y solo Él puede devolverle la vista a los ciegos como en el relato del Evangelio de hoy de San Marcos. Bar-timeo, el ciego, irónicamente puede ver que Je-sús es el "Hijo de David", el Mesías, mientras que los discípulos de Jesús no parecen recono-cerlo por lo que realmente es. De hecho, está tan convencido por su "vista" de Fe, que Jesús lo puede curar, que "tiró su capa, se levantó y se acercó a Jesús.
El manto en la antigüedad era el hogar del pobre, refugio de los elementos y su única prenda de valor. Ahora el Señor se convertiría en el refugio, la seguridad y el verdadero hogar de Bartimeo. Después de que se produce el milagro, no regresa por su "posesión", sino que sigue con entusiasmo a Jesús por el camino como su nuevo discípulo. Antes, había dependido de la caridad de los demás porque no podía trabajar. Ahora no solo estaba dispuesto a trabajar para vivir, sino que también dependía de la providencia de Dios para sostenerlo en su fe. No es un mal intercam-bio para el don de la vista; ¿no te parece? Que podamos, con el don de la vista, usar nuestras aflicciones para crecer en la fe como Bartimeo.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En México y otros países latinoame-ricanos se están preparando para celebrar el Día de Todos los Santos ( 1 de noviembre) y el Día de los Fieles Difuntos (2 de noviem-bre). Estas dos fiestas cristianas fueron mezcladas con antiguos ritos y devociones mesoamericanas. Ellas enfatizan que la
muerte es parte normal del ciclo de la vida y que los difun-tos no se olvidan de sus seres queridos. Esta es la base de la devoción católica a los santos: Dios es Dios de los vivos y no de los muertos (Mateo 22:32); por eso los muertos siguen vivos en una nueva dimensión.
En estos días, las familias pasan tiempo en los ce-menterios, visitando las tumbas de sus parientes y amista-des, lavando las lápidas, poniendo arreglos de zempasuchil y encendiendo veladoras.
En casa, muchos latinos construyen y adornan al-tarcitos dedicándolos a las almas de sus seres queridos que han muerto. En los altares se encuentran papel picado, fo-tos de los difunfo-tos, artículos religiosos, comida, bebida, ci-garritos y otras cosas que los ya muertos disfrutaban du-rante sus vidas. Para los niños muertos se añaden juguetitos que les gustaban en vida.
