SUPPORTING. NEW. URBAN-PLANNING,. ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL STIMULUS FOR THE PROJECT. The third deputy mayor of Barcelona and recently named president of 22@Barcelona, Jordi William Carnes, presented, during the latest Plenary Council, a report on 22@Barcelona’s future prospects.. In his presentation, Jordi William Carnes stressed the three challenges and objectives he has posed for the coming years: •. Urban-planning stimulus, to broaden territorial-planning development, urbanplanning management and quality service infrastructures.. •. Economic stimulus, to consolidate the 22@ clusters (Media, ICT, Biotech and Energy) by attracting and establishing companies and science/tech institutions, providing specific spaces for innovative small and medium-sized enterprises, implementing a landing program for international companies and entrepreneurs and building housing for university students and researchers.. •. Social and cultural stimulus, including a significant increase in social housing, more public green areas, a plan for mobility and public transport, facilities, services and cultural spaces.. The third deputy mayor of Barcelona and president of 22@Barcelona cited knowledge as "one of the key factors to Barcelona’s development and a strategic commitment on behalf of the city.". In his report before the Plenary Council he also evaluated the work undertaken so far, which has resulted in 60.87% of the square meters of ceiling from the approved planning and 67.26 million euros in investments to implement the Special Infrastructure Plan linked to the innovation district.. Currently, there are 114 protected elements in this area (in December 2003 there were 36). Also, there are 1,316 protected residences currently underway, with 2,249 scheduled to be finished by 2010, as well as 18,566 square meters of residential facilities and 78,325 square meters of other facilities.. The Mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, and the third deputy Mayor and President of 22@Barcelona, Jordi William Carnes, welcomed top representatives from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on October 25.. The delegation that visited the Mayor was made up of the co-chair of MIT’s Energy Initiative, Robert C. Armstrong, and the MIT Director of Corporate Relations, Karl Koster, who were accompanied by the vice-president of b_TEC, Miquel Barceló, and the General Manager of b_TEC, Josep Escolano.. The MIT representatives came to Barcelona to visit b_TEC, Barcelona Technological Innovation, which promotes the Besòs Campus in the 22@Barcelona district. b_TEC is a new model of knowledge space where teaching, research and development, and business. activities. will take place. interconnectedly, united by an innovative,. entrepreneurial culture. The new Campus will have a total of 148,300 square meters dedicated to the development of activities related to Energy, Water and Mobility.. MIT Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is an international reference in technological innovation and educating world leaders. Over sixty MIT professors, researchers and alumni have won Nobel prizes. Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, linguist Noam Chomsky and the inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim Breners Lee, are among the most well-known MIT alumni.. (5) PRESS OFFICE. 3.- OVER ONE HUNDRED YOUNG PEOPLE FROM ELEVEN PROFESSIONAL TRAINING CENTERS IN SANT MARTÍ TO DO INTERNSHIPS AT COMPANIES IN THE 22@BARCELONA DISTRICT. 22@Barcelona has started up a new year of its Educational Project, which will allow more than one hundred young people from eleven professional training centers, mainly in Sant Martí and the surrounding areas, to do internships at companies located in the innovation district.. The goal of this initiative is to allow students from the professional training centers in and around Sant Martí to do their internships in local companies, thanks in part to the collaboration of the 22@Network, the Association of Businesses and Institutions in 22@Barcelona.. The Educational Project was started in 2005 in order to foster a continuous interaction between local professional training centers and the economic activity centered in the 22@Barcelona district.. This initiative aims to promote innovative and open professional training, strike a balance between training offered and real demand, facilitate social and professional integration of young people, sponsor school-to-work transition projects, show companies the type of training offered by centers in their area and allow the centers to discover what specific types of training these companies need.. The eleven Professional Training Centers that are participating in this year’s program are: IES Joan d’Àustria, IES Poblenou, IES Fòrum 2004, IES Salvador Seguí, IES Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, IES Josep Serrat i Bonastre, IES Rambla Prim, ETP El Clot, Centre d’Estudis Roca, Centre d’Estudis Monlau and Escola Túrbula.. These centers offer degrees in administrative management, commerce, sports and physical activity sciences, computer systems administration, administration and finance, among others.. (6) PRESS OFFICE. 4.-. 22@BARCELONA. PARTICIPATED. IN. THE. EXCLUSIVE. EUROPEAN. TECHNOLOGY ROUNDTABLE EXHIBITION IN BUDAPEST, WHICH BROUGHT TOGETHER OVER 650 TOP EXECUTIVES FROM 40 COUNTRIES. For the second year running the 22@Barcelona municipal company and the Economic Promotion area of the Barcelona City Council participated in the European Technology Roundtable Exhibition (ETRE), which took place in Budapest in October, and brought together 650 top executives from technology, audiovisual and financial companies in 40 countries. Participants exchanged experiences, discovered innovative technologies, established new alliances and consolidated existing relationships. During the exhibition the 22@Barcelona Director of Marketing and Communication, Jordi Sacristán, explained the progress the innovation district has undergone and initiated conversations with companies interested in moving to Barcelona as part of their internationalization process. In order to stand out from competition also present at the conference (like Paris and some Eastern European countries), the main point addressed was the access to talent both in the innovation district and in Barcelona in general, thanks to the presence of seven universities, two first-rate international business schools and a large international community. He also stressed the many advantages 22@Barcelona offers, like the advanced technological infrastructures (communication and data transfer system with unlimited capacity, pneumatic waste management system, district heating and cooling system, etc.), the large number of foreign companies, and emphasized the place Barcelona, and the 22@Barcelona district, hold as a logistic hub and entry point to Europe and a Latin-American, as well as the high quality of life and ideal business environment that our city provides (according to international studies).. In the past years ETRE has become the most important meeting point for new technology companies and entrepreneurs. Among the participants this year were the vice-president of IBM, Rod Adkins, the president of Microsoft International, Jean-Phillipe Courtis, the Chief Technology Officer of Nokia, Tero Ojanpera and the Chief Corporate Advisor and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Sony, Nobuyuki Idei.. (7) PRESS OFFICE. 5.- CATALAN COMPANIES WILL HAVE FOUR INCUBATION PROGRAMS IN FRANCE TO AID INTERNATIONALIZATION AND FRENCH COMPANIES WILL BE ABLE TO SET UP IN THE 22@BARCELONA DISTRICT WITH HELP FROM THE LANDING PROGRAM. Director of the La Salle Innovation Park, Josep Miquel Piqué, representing the Landing Program, the CEO of the Essone Agency of Commerce and Industry, Gilles Rabin, and the Vice-President of the Essone Chamber of Commerce, Jean Claude Chabin, signed a collaboration pre-agreement that will allow Catalan companies to set up delegations in any of four French platforms. This agreement will also allow French companies to internationalize by moving to the innovation district with help from the Landing Program, sponsored jointly by the UPC’s (Polytechnic University of Catalonia) Innovate Program, the La Salle Innovation Park and 22@Barcelona.. The goal of this pre-agreement is to connect innovative systems through global incubation and business resources, as well as promoting the internationalization of companies based on the integration of governmental, financial and business service agencies with companies all over the world.. Thanks to this agreement, both Catalan and French companies that want to expand from Essone to Barcelona or vice-versa will have access to technological platforms, personnel, professional and consulting services, and networking resources both in local and foreign markets.. Specifically, Essone will provide four incubation platforms for Catalan companies through the Landing Program: Genopole, a biotech incubator dedicated to research and development of medical technology; Orly International, headquarters of both local and international companies; Innov’valley, an incubator located in a renowned R&D area, and Hubtech 2:1, the French office in Boston that will help growing companies introduce their products and services in the US technology market, as well as the pharmaceutical, optical, medical and security and defense sectors.. The Landing Program, which includes the UPC’s Innovate Program, La Salle and 22@Barcelona, will offer Catalan companies working premises in the innovation district, which will have space in the Media-TIC building currently being built by the Zona Franca Consortium and scheduled to be finished in 2009.. Landing Program The Landing Program is an initiative that is jointly sponsored by the UPC’s (Polytechnic University of Catalonia) Innovate Program, the La Salle Innovation Park and 22@Barcelona, whose goal is to attract international talent and foreign investment to Catalonia, specifically to the innovation district.. This program has already reached a number of agreements with technology parks from China, Mexico, Korea and France. Likewise, they are currently working on similar agreements with institutions and technology parks in Argentina, India, Sweden and Brazil.. NEWSLETTER ISSUE 20 –OCTOBER 2007. 8.

(9) PRESS OFFICE. 6.- LEADING AMERICAN BUSINESS MAGAZINE CNBC CALLS 22@BARCELONA ONE OF EUROPE’S TOP REGENERATION PROJECTS. The September issue of CNBC, one of the leading American business magazines, considers the consolidation project underway in the 22@Barcelona district one of Europe’s top regeneration projects.. The article focuses on Barcelona’s metamorphosis into an international metropolis, which began with the “Romans and culminated by the end of the 19th century with Spain’s greatest concentration of factories in its Poblenou district, which has become an elaborate tech hub with ultramodern architecture”. The article’s author, Rupert Eden, reminds readers that the area once called Catalonia’s Manchester has now become an innovative district housing companies from different sectors like: research and development, media and marketing.. CNBC also explains that the 22@Barcelona district “exemplifies Barcelona’s current investment potential”, having already attracted a large number of companies. The article also explains the benefits this regeneration project has brought to the Poblenou neighborhood, which include 30,000 new jobs, 3.2 million m2 of new offices and housing and 114,000 m2 of parks and green areas.. Eden emphasizes the importance of the Agbar Tower, which “closely resembles London’s Gherkin”, and praises the innovation district’s location, connections with the rest of the city and proximity to the Diagonal Mar area.. (10) PRESS OFFICE. 7.- 22@UPDATE BREAKFAST: JORDI WILLIAM CARNES, PRESIDENT OF 22@BARCELONA: “IN THIS NEW STAGE OF 22@BARCELONA WE WILL STRENGTHEN. THE. ECONOMIC. COMPONENT. OF. THE. PROJECT,. COMPLEMENTING THE SYNERGIES BETWEEN THE INNOVATION DISTRICT AND THE CITY”.. 22@Barcelona, with collaboration from Indra, the top Information Technology company in Spain and one of the most important in Europe, organized October’s 22@Update Breakfast.. Jordi William Carnes, president of 22@Barcelona and third deputy mayor of Barcelona, presided over the event, stressing the new strategy for the innovation district: “We will continue with the urban-planning project but, at the same time, strengthen 22@Barcelona’s economic component. This will complement the synergies created between 22@Barcelona and the city”.. For Carnes, the 22@Barcelona project “has to be consolidated not only as the idea of one area but must also have a component with international projection”. For this reason, “22@Barcelona must become the innovation airport”, said the president.. Presentation of the EuroScience Open Forum Enric Banda, President of EuroScience, also participated in this month’s 22@Update Breakfast. He presented the EuroScience Open Forum 2008 (ESOF), which will take place in Barcelona in July 2008. This event is a meeting place for researchers, businesses, universities and journalists.. The Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation is organizing the 2008 ESOF, which “wants to become an open forum for scientific and technological debate. Indra’s Innovation Model Following this, as part of the “Innovator of the month” program, the General Manager of Indra, Josep Mª Vilà, explained how innovation is the base of his company’s business model. This model focuses on generating value for the client and developing projects that pay special attention to emerging market sectors.. For Vilà, this business model focuses on “positioning the company with top clients, creating proprietary technology and solutions and using innovation and talent in everything the company does”. As a result of this strategy Indra has become the top Spanish company in the Information Technology sector, making up one third of the international market and employing 22,500 professionals. The company, according to its General Manager, dedicates 7% of its turnover to innovation.. 22@Barcelona Progress Finally, to close the presentation, Pere Fons, 22@ Manager, presented the latest progress in the project. He emphasized the more than 1,000 companies that have moved or are in the process of moving to the district since the beginning of the project in the year 2000.. Of these companies, 47% have been newly created; 53% belong to one of the four clusters that make up 22@Barcelona (Information and Communication Technologies, Media, Biotech and Energy) and 35% work in R&D. In this period over 32,000 new jobs have been created in the district.. Fons also stressed the important presence of the universities in the area (UOC, UPF, IL3UB and UPC), which means between 25,000 and 30,000 students.. NEWSLETTER ISSUE 20 –OCTOBER 2007. 11.

(12) PRESS OFFICE. 8.- HUMAN RESOURCES COMMISSION OF 22@BARCELONA’S ASSOCIATION OF BUSINESSES. AND. INITIATIVES. LIKE. INSTITUTIONS, THE. 22@NETWORK,. EDUCATIONAL. SUPPORTS. PROJECT. AND. SOCIAL DIGITAL. VOLUNTEERING. The 22@Barcelona Association of Businesses and Institutions, 22@Network, has initiated, through their Human Resources Commission, a series of social activities. 26 partner companies attended the plenary session where these ideas were presented and showed interest in the projects developed in the district by this organization.. Initiatives presented at the session included the Educational Project, sponsored by 22@Barcelona to foster continuous interaction between professional training centers and companies in the district, the Mobility Survey, which will be given to members in order to improve mobility in the neighborhood, and Digital Volunteering, which contributes to covering basic technological consulting needs and introducing digitals technologies to residents and associations in the neighborhood, among others.. Representatives from the following companies attended the session of the Human Resources Commission: Agbar, Barcelona TV, Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, Canal IP, CPSL, Cinc, Coaching40, Consorci Localret, Constructora San José, Cromosoma, Dicoel, Ecotècnia, Futurlink, GTD Sistemas de Información, Ibermutuamur, IL3-UB, Leitat, Egarsat, Pich-Aguilera Arquitectes, Randstad, Sadiel, Indra, Gaes, T-Systems and Microsoft.. Digital Literacy Likewise, the 22@Barcelona Association of Businesses and Institutions, 22@Network, has already started a Digital Literacy initiative, with help from the Fundació Esplai.. This project, which began as a pilot program, has workers from the 22@Network member companies in 22@Barcelona, like Gaes and Indra, participate in the digital learning workshops given by the Fundació Esplai in the “Red Conecta” telecenter in Diagonal Mar. From Monday to Thursday for an hour and a half, the volunteers from each company become support teachers in new technology for the residents that attend this center.. The aim of this initiative is to foster group learning where the dynamic is not one where the knowledge-holder merely transmits what they know to the students, but also. This way, the volunteers make students of these digital literacy courses feel safe and confident.. 22@Network 22@Network is the Association of Businesses and Institutions in 22@Barcelona. This association was founded in the innovation district in order to unite innovative companies and organizations to participate in consolidation processes making the 22@Barcelona district a dynamic, transforming space and a technological leader.. The General Manager of Indra, Josep M. Vilà, presides over the 22@Network, which has 59 associated members including tech companies like T-Systems, Futurlink, Microsoft, Infonomia, Gaes, Ecotècnia, Informática El Corte Inglés and institutions like the UOC, the UPF, IL3-UB and the Catalan Institute of Technology, among others..
