This course is designed to give the students a general view about the history of the engineering field and emphasize the evidences of engineering advances through different centuries especially the industrial revolution.

3- Intended Learning Outcomes of the course (ILOs):

a- Knowledge and understanding:

a1-Describe the differential terminologies used in the engineering branch.

a2-Illustrate the history of his profession along the different ages and how his civilization gave very important role in advancing engineering.

a3-State the circumstances affecting the engineering and technology development.

a4-List the different engineering specifications and their corresponding field of activity.

b- Intellectual skills

b1-Differentiate between science, engineering and technology.

b2-Solve different technical problems using the available tools like that found in the engineering history.

b3-Compare between the different engineering specialties.

c- Professional and practical skills

c1-Improve different techniques according to the student deep background about the different fields of engineering and technology.

c2-Carry out discussions about the role of his land in developing the engineering civilization.

d- General and transferable skills

d1-Demonstrate efficient IT capabilities.

d2-Search, life-long, for information in a self-learning manner and refer to relevant literature efficiently.

d3-Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary team

Topic(1) Introduction, engineering and the term "engineer"', definition of engineering- science- art and the relations and differences between them.

Topic(2) History of engineering: The engineering in the ancient civilizations,

medieval and renaissance engineering, engineering in the modern era,

Topic(3) Evidences on the advances of engineering through centuries: tools and machines, measurements and units, building construction and materials, bridges, transportation, petroleum, engineering materials, computers.

Topic(4) The industrialization development in modern Egypt: Islamic civilization in Egypt, the French invasion of Egypt, beginning of the industrialization development in modern Egypt, most important industrial projects in Egypt up till now.

Topic(5) Industrial revolution: definition, appearance and properties of the industrial revolution, different effects of the Industrial revolution, political effects, effects on the relation between science and technology.

Topic(6) Engineer- the engineering profession: braces of the engineering profession, engineering occupations, scientific investigation, design, development, production, construction, management, selling and marketing, international classification of engineering occupations, properties of successful engineer.

Topic(7) Engineering and society: effect of engineering on society along different ages, society and problems of technology development, engineering organizations.

Topic(8) Technological development in Egypt: requirements of science and technology, technology transfer.
